Not so welcoming Hotel Pennsylvania...
By Kori, 4/15/12
First upon entering, the check-in line had a wait of about 25 minutes and you were not allowed to use the restrooms without already having a room key. Their misleading description of their hotel rooms lead me to believe i was booking a room for 4 guests called a "superior" double bed room, double bed thinking the room would have 2 double beads, instead was one double bed with not much space. Also only one of the room keys actually worked. When checking out the next day, the car was parked valet and we waited over an hour and a half, after we reassured 2 times that the car was already on its way after asking. Overall the location was good but the service was rather missleading and very disorganized. I'm not a picky person either, this is actually the fortst review I have ever written of a hotel stay but it was that disappointing that I feli I should speak up. Enjoy the city!

Great mid-town location
By larry, 2/25/12
Great mid-town location, right across the street from the Long Island Rail Road and close to most subways. I liked that I could walk to most places of interest, museums, Broadway shows, etc. This is an old hotel, not fancy, inexpensive, clean, safe, comfortable beds and a good value for the price. I've stayed here a couple of times and plan to go back this spring as I love NYC!!!

BED BUGS!!! DO NOT COME HERE!!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/3/11
So we came here on a school trip with 25 high school kids. The first night one of the rooms had be bugs and they had to change rooms at 3 in the morning. A day later they tested the room and it came back positive for bugs. That same next day a girl in our group in the next room had bites and rashes all over her. They were already in a tiny room. They then got moved into a room that couldn't even fit 2 suitcases. We only had 1 towel and we called down. We didn't get them. After calling 5 times and 3 hours later we got towels. This is honestly the grossest hotel. DO NOT COME HERE!!!!!!!!

Nice Lobby, down hill from there!
The rooms are old, worn out and depressing. Did I mention that it was greatly over priced.

Don't Do It! Great Website, Terrible Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/2/11
I'm not one to write negative reviews but this is worth it. Stayed at Hotel Pennsylvania last night. First room had broken tub, grout falling off the bathroom wall and came into the room with all the windows wide open. Called front desk and asked to be moved. After an hour they came and, without any questions, moved us to a new room. This room had a piece of the wall missing in the hallway outside; lack of plate covers on the electrical outlets; two flat sheets on the bed instead of a fitted bottom sheet; and rusty bathroom fixtures. Never going back and glad they are demolishing the building in May.

AWFUL!!!! Like crack house awful!
By MargaretD, 1/10/11
This place was just AWFUL. The lobby looked fine- like an older hotel, but the rooms & hotel interior looked like a crime scene. I really expected to find blood stains & chalk outlines in our "suite". The hallways were FILTHY & the carpet had huge stains on it- which looked like they had just had bottles of bleach poured on them to deal with any mystery DNA on the rug. The room we had was a "suite"- which contained two double sized beds & was the size of any other average hotel room- not a suite by any definition. We got to the room & tried to get booked into another hotel- this place was awful & I was concerned for both safety & hygiene. We had to prop the window open with a water bottle as it would not stay up on its own- the lamp shade had MASSIVE burns on it- which came from either a cigar or a crack pipe- I'm guessing the guests of this establishment are more inclined to have crack pipes on them not cigars. The lamps & TV did not seem to turn on or off on their own- the trick was to plug them in- and unplug them in when you wanted them on. We did not shower in the room- socks were worn at all times- we slept fully dressed. This place looked NOTHING like the rooms on their website. The only positive was that we were only here for one night. That said I'm willing to pay 3 times more & be in a less convenient location to avoid staying at the Pennsylvania. It was really just disgusting- it felt like a crystal palace or a shooting gallery- but NOT a hotel that people without a serious meth habit. The rooms looked NOTHING like the pictures on the website- this is a great example of false advertisement.

easy trip to nyc for my wedding dress
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/20/10
I went down to NYC with my maid of honor on the search for the perfect wedding dress. we had a few appointments, so needed to be somewhere central and close to transit links. the hotel's location was perfect and made zipping around the city super easy. the hotel itself is very big, but once we found our room, it was clean and the beds were very comfortable- to fall right into after our day of running around the city.

A great weekend in one of my favourite cities
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/27/10
Had been slightly nervous about my stay here, after reading some negative reviews, but i was really happy with my decision. Would definitely return! The hotel was in a perfect location. With Penn station across the street it made it super easy to get anywhere in the city. Room was a bit dated, but that was okay because it was spotless and well maintained. THe bathroom was a bit tight but the shower had good pressure. Got a great deal on the room and would book here again.

Don't leave valuables in the room
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/21/10
Interested to read the last review and hear that items went missing. We had a camera case complete with video and digital cameras stolen out of our room. Interestingly the manager advised us not to report it to the police but to collect an insurance report when we checked out. We decided to go the police who told us they would advise anyone NOT to stay at this hotel.

Disgusting and Dangerous
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/7/10
Hotel Pennsylvania is absolutely the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. I read another review where someone compared this hotel to a hostel. I think that's funny because the hostel I stayed in when I was in Europe was a million times better than this place. Check in was rather short but apparently that's very unusual for this hotel. When we checked in, we were fairly happy with our room. It wasn't cleaned completely, but there was a cleaning lady by our door when we came up so she must have figured it was close enough. It definitely wasn't the nicest room I've been in by any means, but I wasn't expecting it to be. I knew it was old so I wasn't completely taken aback at the deterioration of the room overall (especially the bathroom). And we had a refridgerator and table so we were happy. However, it went way downhill from there. The following night, we came back and realized that the door was not locked and was not locking at all anymore. We switched rooms, only to be put in a room that smelled extremely musty...because the carpet was completely soaked! The hotel was clearly aware of the problem, as the little bit of remaining furniture in the room (2 beds and the tv) were in corners away from the center of the room and the huge spot in the carpet. I called and asked for towels, as there were none in the room. We left to try and find something to eat at that point, when we got back the towels were just stuffed inbetween the door handle outside the room. When we went in, I made the mistake of taking off my shoes and stepping off the bed. I was immediately stabbed in the foot by a pine needle...interesting, considering our stay was in June! We switched rooms again and this time the room smelled terribly of smoke and the window was wide open. Both my brother and dad tried closing it but it wouldn't budge. So we had to call maintenance to take care of it. In addition to all that nonsense, my mom found a dead fly in their bed the next morning. We definitely weren't happy but figured we didn't have much choice but to stay in that last room and just deal with it. In addition to the lack of refridgerator and furniture in the last 2 rooms, there was also a lack of hot water. The water in the shower needed to be left on for a minimum of 5 minutes before it got to anything above freezing temperature. Luckily for me, I was traveling with family because when we got to the last room, I noticed my bag with brand new (and expensive) shampoo/conditioner was missing! I specifically remember handing it to the bellman unloading the car but it somehow never made it to the room. Either that or it was stolen out of the first, unlocked, room! That seems to be the only thing missing though so it seems unlikely that it was just taken from the room. When my dad complained to the manager on duty, he said they could take off $90 for that night. Doesn't really seem good enough considering we missed our dinner (the restaurant had closed by the time we got there and we had a really hard time finding anything still open) and we didn't get to our final room until about 2:30 am. Not sure if the room was even discounted at all, considering they never gave a receipt upon checkout! The main reason for our trip was to visit a culinary school for my brother. Unfortunately, he missed the lunch that the school offered him because the hotel took forever bringing the car after checkout. We called an hour ahead for the car, as directed, but still ended up waiting in front of the hotel another 45 minutes. Obviously, the location is great. And the price was good for the location. But that doesn't make up for the deplorable condition of the hotel. This hotel is not secure, maintained or even properly cleaned. You shouldn't feel unsafe when it comes to your health, personal safety and overall well being when it comes to choosing a hotel for a vacation. Spend a little more, it's definitely worth it!
