A great place to be in Mark Twain Country

I was impressed by the hotel--the only major chain with a facility in downtown Elmira. Its location is ideal for taking in all of the sights pertaining to Mark Twain. Elmira tour trolley even departs from the lobby.
Hal Holbrook actually stayed here when he was in town to give performance of Mark Twain Tonight. That should tell you something, since town fathers could have booked him at a slew of other hotels between Elmira and Corning.
Staff are very friendly and helpful, from the general manager on down. In fact, the GM seems like she practically lives there. Restaurant staff at breakfast were cordial and offered good service.
Didn't like fact that getting to second floor rooms from elevator involves going down a flight of six stairs. Had to have help to get luggage to the room. However, this problem will be eliminated by early next year when new elevator is operational.
Hotel undergoing major renovations, but staff members are careful to place guests in rooms away from any possible noise. Rooms could use a few more outlets. That's going to happen, too.
Beds, though I found them to be very comfortable, also will be replaced along with other furnishings. When this renovation is completed and if staff continues to be as nice and helpful as they are now, this hotel will be hard to beat.
