checked out same day
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/05/07
From the minute I walked in the door, the chaos began. Check in girl stayed on the phone with another customer not even acknowledging another customer and myself standing 2 ft away from her. A good 8 mins went by before she hung up the phone. After which she was very pleasant, however, having mtn bikes, she took me to a parking lot behind the hotel to show me a shed to lock my bike in. While I was sitting in my car attempting to back out, the owner of Moody's walked by and yelled at me about being in the way. "Was I an employee?, why are you here then? etc etc" what a jerk! I finally got back into the hotel to ask for the manager, she was on the phone spazzing out about"having a long day, so many problems, time is running out".I got to my room to find one of the windows unable to open due to the frame of the glass was coming apart. Went back downstairs to talk about the bike, the manager started ranting and raving about not to put the bike in that shed and I had to move it into their little kitchen...which I did. Asked about the window and if she would move us away from the main street and from the trains going by. She couldn't do that and I asked for our money back. At that point, she started yelling that if "she had to refund one more penny, her boss would send her to McDonald's to work". This was just too much for her. I went back up to the room and decided when the half dozen Harly's went roaring by that I was definiately going to check out. Went back downstairs, once again Mngr was on the phone wailing about all the problems she was having, been there since 7 a.m. blah blah blah. I told her that I wanted to talk to the owner which mangr. said she couldn't get in touch with her and she'll be here later. There was "NO way she was going to refund my money". Meanwhile, she told the person on the phone, Doug was the name she said, that she needed a new job. I went back up stairs, mngr, a few mins later knocked on the door and stuck a cordless phone in the open door. I said hello and it was dead. She said it was the owner. At that time, mangr's 2 small children were standing there taking all of this in. The young girl that had me put the bike in shed was standing there, as well. The manager turned to her and reprimanded her harshly about having me park behind the hotel, in front of me, the kids...I took my things, went downstairs and put the keys on the frontdesk. A young man, Michael, behind the desk said that there was no way to get ahold of the owner. He took my phone number. Meanwhile, Steve the maintenace worker for the hotel, was there. He called the owner on his cell phone and immediately I had her, Ramona, on the phone. I explained everything to her, she was extremely apologetic. She agreed to refund my money for the room and offered to call another hotel to make me a reservation. Also, the charge at the other hotel was more expensive than what she was charging however, Ramona, paid the difference. The Truckee Hotel is quite old and quaint. However, the chaos, non-customer service provided by the frontdesk and/or mananger does not make staying there at such high prices worth any of it. The room we were given had 3 beds, no a/c, over the main drag and railroad tracks, very very small bathrooms down the hall, decaying and chipping walls/window sills. The poor relationship that the restaurant, Moody's, and the hotel is obvious by the rudeness to anyone associated with the hotel by the owner of the restaurant. I say, "get over yourself, dude". Ramona, was gracious in getting us settled in a nicer hotel and hopefully, she'll find herself a new manager, do the needed repairs to the hotel and let the Truckee Hotel stay in business.

Stay here only if you are desperate!
By JANE, 02/27/07
My husband and I are avid skiers and have stayed at the Truckee Hotel many times in the past. It's a bargain room in an otherwise expensive ski market, but trust me, it has really changed. We stayed there this past weekend for two nights and among the problems we encountered were: 1. I made the reservation on-line and never received a confirmation e-mail as stated on their web site. When I called to confirm, they did not have the reservation under my name. Fortunately, I did have the confirmation number and they were finally able to confirm our reservation. 2. Their web site states: “An expansive continental breakfast of rich brewed coffee and herbal teas, baked goods, fruit, cereals and juice are served in the Whitney Room on the second floor.” This is a TOTAL LIE. On Saturday morning, there was no fruit, a few slices of bread, a few English muffins, raisin bran and oatmeal. There were no herbal teas or other baked goods. 3. On Sunday morning, we arrived in the breakfast room at 8 a.m. and they were totally out of food and coffee. When we complained, the manager left the hotel to go shop for food. We got tired of waiting. We left at 9 a.m. without breakfast. There were many upset guests, including families with small children, who were promised a continental breakfast and got absolutely nothing! 4. The former breakfast lounge closed last year and the new room is too small to accommodate even 1/3 of the hotel guests. On Saturday evening, we noticed that employees from the restaurant below were taking the chairs from the Whitney Room down to the restaurant. These chairs were never returned. On Sunday morning, there were maybe a dozen chairs in the room. No food—no chairs. 5. The complimentary coffee, tea and cookie service each afternoon has been discontinued. 6. There were no earplugs in our room, even though we were right above the train station. 7. Our room was so small. We had nowhere to hang our clothes or put our suitcase. 8. Our radiator clanged so much at night that it kept us awake. We finally had to turn off the heat. 9. We knew we would have shared baths and this was fine with us. However, on this visit, the bathrooms were filthy. 10. There were no hand towels in any of the bathrooms. 11. On our floor, there were only 2 shared baths and one of them was out of order! 12. The bathrooms frequently were without toilet paper. When we went to check out of the hotel, there was no one at the front desk. There were several upset guests and people complaining about not getting breakfast. We just left our key on the desk and walked out. We stayed here many times in the past and our expectations were not that high to begin with, but the service at this hotel has really gone down hill. DO NOT stay here unless you are desperate for a room.

A Disappointment
By roy, 12/12/06
This hotel charges premium prices on the basis that it offers a "slice of the old west". This is true, but in all the wrong ways! Lighting that is not bright enough to read by, plumbing that is not really up to the job, and drab, overwhelming furnishings all made for a depressing stay. Add to this prices that are about double those of local motels, and you probably get the message. You even have to pay an overnight car parking charge! On the plus side, the hotel is very central and is close to many good bars and restaurants, the staff were helpful, and the breakfasts well worthwhile. Overall, however, I was very disappointed.

I Thought I saw a Ghost
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/18/06
I have allways heard the Truckee Hotel was haunted but as a young single woman I was too afraid to stay there untill my boyfriend convinced me to. We got in a fight and he left for Reno and I found myself alone in a haunted hotel for the night. At about 12:30am, I could hear my door that was locked opened and shut. In the pitch black dark I could feel a person climbing in bed with me. I thought Oh my god, a ghost! Then it spoke to me and said "How about some sugar honey" I screamed and turned on the light. And there was the old fat desk cleark from the lobby who checked us in, naked in bed with me! And from that moment on I had a great time.

Go somewhere else
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/07/06
Some older hotels can be quaint and nostalgic. This place needs a lot of work. Go if you don't mind paying $200.00 a night for towels that are ripped, climbing 3 flights of stairs, no parking, basically no one at the front desk. Tom Alamo, CA

Much too hot and noisy!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/01/06
The rumbling and honking of trains outside the hotel woke me up many times every night - if I got to sleep at all! Trains honk incessantly as they pass, and the thin walls and windows offer no soundproofing. The bar across the street added to the noise - music and drunk people. It was awful. The heat in the room cannot be regulated effectively. During cold nights in february, the room was MUCh too hot. So hot that we had to have the window wide open, which made the noise problem worse. These rooms should not be rented until the walls are soundproofed and the heating system fixed. It's that simple. I'd rather snow camp some place quiet than stay there next year.

We keep coming back
By Jenny, 12/23/05
The Truckee Hotel is old, and they dress it up so it looks like a fancy old parlor. The floor creaks under your feet and the floors are not entirely level -- but it's all about the charm. The beds all have beautiful quilts on them. You feel like you're in your Grandmother's guest bedroom when you step into your room. The place is heated with steam heat that hisses and knocks about in the middle of the night. There is no elevator and the climb to the 4th floor is helariously steep. The 3rd and 4th floor are priced for the climb (cheap) and the bathrooms are down the hall. The 2nd floor has bathrooms attached to rooms, but they're much more expensive. We love this place -- it's a true find for a skiier who doesn't want to pay the Tahoe price in Tahoe.
