You get what you pay for
I stayed here for a conference for 5 nights. I was apprensive given that the reviews have usually not been glowing - if they have, it was all based on price considerations.... My apprensions were valid.
The rooms in the tower are decent to good. I had a "petite suite" (paid $70.00 a night for it), and think that the room was comparable to a Hilton or a Marriott in a mid-sized city (Kansas City, Providence, etc.). It is not up to the par of a Westin or a large chain hotel in a major city. However, the room space was ample; shower and bathroom were actually rather nice. I believe that if you are going to stay here, you MUST book the Tower. I walked through the "Courtyard" rooms (including the OJ Room (Room 1203)) and they reminded me of a well-worn apartment complex. Avoid them is my advice.
The Casino area was dated, not too attractive, and rather unpleasant. The blast of cigarette smoke hits you the second you enter the casino area, and it is pungent. The crowd in the casino borders on ancient in age (I saw one person with an oxygen mask and smoking a cigarette), or tacky (i.e., ripped jeans, biker outfits, and lots of hairspray).
To compare, I walked through casinos at Paris, New York New York, Planet Hollywood, and even Circus Circus, and the Palace Station was the least inviting of the lot.
The food is, at best, average. I ate at the "Broiler" once and it was nothing to write home about. The Cafe was no better. The $6.99 buffet was truly dreadful. The Oyster bar smelled terrible, and you could smell it from yards away. Any oyster bar should NOT be that pungent. I did not eat at Cabo, the pasta restaurant or the Chinese restaurant. I heard that the pasta restaurant was NOT good. On the other hand, I heard that the Chinese restaurant was actually pretty good given the large number of asian travellers that stay there.
Jack's Pub was decent and that is the only place were you would see younger folks. Of the three times I went there and overheard coversation from other guests, I believe that the sentiment was uniform in that Jack's was a comparative oasis in a sea of mediocrity.
The hotel staff was pleasant and tried their best. Unfortunately, the hotel just doesn't give off a very good vibe... Again, you get what you pay for.
