Do Not Book An Event At This Hotel!
Please beware and do not book an event or gathering of any sort in this Holiday Inn in Columbus, MS. I organized a family reunion in Columbus, MS and used this hotel to host two family gatherings on two different days (a Friday & Saturday). I booked the events at this hotel because I had attended other events there a few years before and all seemed fine. But my experience this time was absolutely HORRIBLE!
We found out upon arriving the first day that the air conditioning was not working in the room we were having our family events (by the way, this was the only banquet room in the hotel). No one at the hotel bothered to contact us about this beforehand to alert us, and even after arriving, no one still came to let us know what was going on with the A/C, why it wasn't working, or if there was a maintenance person working on fixing the A/C. It was as if they thought we would not notice that the A/C was not on in mid-July in Mississippi with a temperature of 99 degrees outside.
Whenever we asked about the A/C, we could not get a straight answer. We kept getting the run around from the staff and from the hotel's salesperson in charge of working with clients/customers for hotel events.... who, by the way, was absolutely incompetent-- she even said so herself admitting that she was just thrown into her position, and that just in the past year the hotel has had 4 different sales people in her current position.
Anyway....they kept telling us that they called someone in to work on the A/C, but later we discovered that that was all a lie and that the A/C had been broken in that room for months. But they didn't tell us in advance because they did not want us to take our 2-day events elsewhere. So, apparently they expected us to just sweat it out, because I had to BEG the hotel to at least get us some fans in the room.... because by this time it was too late to move our events to a different location. And while we would be uncomfortable, we were not going to be miserable sitting in that room.
When we were not getting anywhere with the salesperson, who was M.I.A. most of the time, we eventually found the hotel owner at a bar in the hotel (by the way, he did not like being found). The hotel owner was incredibly STUPID to be a business owner. As he was speaking to me, it became clear that he had no experience in hotel management or customer service. He was not trying to be accommodating at all to us, and it didn't seem to matter to him that we were spending thousands of dollars in his hotel. He just kept throwing up his hands and making excuses saying it wasn't his fault the A/C was not working and he could not do anything about it. UNBELIEVEABLE! So, not only were we dealing with an inept, uncoordinated salesperson, but also a rude, shiftless hotel owner.
So, please heed this warning.... DO NOT BOOK ANY EVENT AT THE HOLIDAY INN IN COLUMBUS, MS-- especially while it's hot outside because it will feel like a sauna inside....and could very well feel like an icebox when the weather turns cold. And, if you've booked an event, cancel your reservation immediately and move your event right away if you don't want to go through the same horrible experience with the staff and owner.
