Was a great place for Mardi Gras
By JFritsch62, 3/24/11
It was the cheapest place we could find during Mardi Gras. The parades past right in front of the hotel. It was great being able to go back and forth between the room and the party outside. Yes it's pretty much a dive, but the location was worth it. You could walk to the French Quarter and hit Bourbon Street. It was several blocks but not to bad of a stroll. You will pass plenty of eateries on your walk. You have to pay for parking which adds quite a bit to the price and most of the travel sites fail to mention just how much. There is parking on the streets but you have to search and would probably wind up a good ways for the hotel. If you don't mind staying in a dive, this one is in a pretty good location.

My Stay during Mardi Gras
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/4/11
The stay at Canal Street Hotel was horrible. I had to change rooms 3 times and was still dissatisfied. The rooms were smelly and unfit for human comfort. They have a serious bug problem. I had my friend “Mr. Roach”, pacing up and down my headboard half the night. The staff was not willing to accommodate me with what I paid for. They told me that the people who live there monthly are the ones with the suites. Therefore, do not pay for a "Suite" because there is no such thing, for regular customers, at the Canal Street Hotel. My reservation through Hotels.com also stated that the suite had a balcony. UNTRUE! Neither party was willing to compensate me for this travesty. I feel that Hotels.com to investigate these hotels just a little bit more before they put them on their website. The pictures on the website are FALSELY REPRESENTED. I attend Mardi Gras every year. I was excited when I was able to find a hotel on Canal St, but after my arrival, I would have been better off sleeping in an alley with all the bums hanging around at the Hotel (roach motel). This was the worst experience I ever had.

my daughter loved it!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/3/09
we stayed a couple days in february 2006 - the hotel was still in shock from Hurricane Katrina, there was severe damage to rooms facing canal street. we had good beds, good tv, a huge window in the bathroom that was eye level with I-10 which we all enjoyed. i think the price was great, the elevator worked, the desk people were very nice, we walked the town daily till after dark & had no problem with the hotel location. we always feel safe in NO. daughter & I try to not be afraid wherever we go. dogs smell fear you know

It depends on what you are looking for!
By Mr.Wuffleberry, 5/20/09
Crack was readily available from the roaming drug dealers in the hallways. The domestic disputes in the open atrium provided entertainment in the evening and the steady tempo of gun play lulled us to sleep in the wee hours of the morning.

Come to New Orleans but not here!!
By Dudley, 2/3/09
The Canal Street Hotel is not the type of place I would bring my dog to much less my wife. It is a terrible place due to lack of service, mold in the rooms, wall paper coming off the walls, no swimming pool, glass and nails on the parking lot of the third floor. I was concerned because I might hear noise from the Interstate being so close. This was not a problem because I heard the noise from others yelling profanities in the hall. We had a 3 P.M. check in time for our room but had to wait an hour because our room was being "cleaned". When I entered the room, it was freezing cold. The A.C. had been set for 52 degrees. The sheets felt like sandpaper. When I went to check out at a little before 5 A.M. I was told to wait which I did reluctantly. I thought this would be an easy check out time but it was not. After I argued with the clerk the clerk quit playing with the computer to check me out. One good thing was that he checked me out with me having only one computer key. My wife had left earlier, taking her key with her and and I did not get charged for it.

Never going back!!!
By Vanessa Lemke, 10/29/07
The lobby looked clean and friendly, so you would expect the room to be the same. Wrong! The bed sheets had unrecognizable stains on them. The carpet had rips and tears in it and looked like it had never been vacuumed. The bathroom could never have been cleaned, there were stains in the tub, on the floor and in the toilet. I have never gone to a hotel and left like I wasn't able to sit down before until visiting this place. We booked the room based on their pictures and that was a huge mistake, nothing looks like what was shown.

Hotel is being renovated
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/17/07
This hotel is not for the faint of heart. In general, it is in fairly bad shape. The pool was on the 3rd floor, but was closed due to reconstruction of that area. There is a lot of work going on, but it all takes time and skilled labor is limited in New Orleans since Katrina. Our room was not very clean, but there were no bugs, etc. Everything worked after a few adjustments with the exception of the phone and some lights. All the employees we met were very helpful and friendly including the workers. Breakfast was limited, but sufficient. It was a slight walk to the French Quarter and the sidewalks are under construction. We had some people in their upper 60's and 70's and we were able to walk to Jackson Square and back. There is mass transit just outside the hotel for those that don't want to walk. I would go back.
