Absolutely the worst
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/21/11
This hotel is so bad I wanted to post this review anywhere they were accepting reviews. Cons: Our first room had water damage that was completely unimaginable. It looked like a monster growing out of the wall. Our second room was just as bad. Don't let the website pictures fool you. There was brown wall paper peeling off, furniture with the paint worn off. The bedding doesn't match. It is like a Amityville Horror. Absolutely not a hotel I recommend using until they update the place. It is way past unacceptable. I can't believe it's a member of the Starwood Hotels program. It gives the brand a bad name. Pros: The staff was nice.

It' better than some
By Ginger V, 7/7/09
....and I can't complain. The price is right, but the rooms are tiny. The rooms are CLEAN and thats important. You can get anywhere from this prime location....and since the rooms are so small, you can lounge in their downstairs lobby and have din din at Ditka's. Walk to shopping, look out your window and there's chicago's mag mile. After a recent stay in a hotel that shall not be named, when I come back for Jazz fest, I'm staying here!!

Not bad except for sleeping
By JenniferH, 9/8/08
The location was perfect to get to American Girl (by walking). The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful to me and my daughter. Room was clean and fresh. There was no fitness center as mentioned on their site. The street was very noisy and we were up all night from that. I would stay there again, but in an inside room with no windows to the street. I had 2 hours of sleep, I think. They took care of my baggage and my car. Valet price was high $43. I would stay again if I could not get a better price somewhere else within walking distance of everything. No ice machine or drink machines. The only place to eat at the hotel was the restaurant attached which was extremely high, no kids prices on menu.

Not THAT bad
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/8/08
Like many people who stay here, we booked this hotel using a discount website (Priceline) and got a great deal for a downtown Chicago hotel. After looking at reviews on this site and others, I was extremely skeptical about staying here. I'm very paranoid about cleanliness and smells, and from reading the reviews, I expected it to be completely disgusting, with mold in the bathrooms and peeling wallpaper. However, after checking into our room, I was surprised that despite being a little outdated, it was actually nice. The bedspread appeared to be somewhat new, and the bathroom was roomy and clean. The sink was outside the bathroom, which is always helpful when you're with other people. The room was large enough to walk around, and we had a great view of the John Hancock building and Michigan Ave. I also thought that the service was pretty good. Although check-in was supposed to be at 3 pm, no rooms were cleaned yet. We were irritated at first, but the lady at the front desk was very apologetic and told us to give her our cell phone number so that she could call us as soon as a room was cleaned. We also told her that we wanted a king size bed since we were going to sneak in a third person. We left our luggage there (which they let us store for free even though it's normally $3/bag), and less than an hour later we got the call that our room was ready. When we checked in, the lady apologized again. Also, the day we checked out, we saw the same lady walking outside, and she remembered us and said hi, which I thought was very sweet. The rest of the staff was helpful and considerate, too. Some weird things did happen during our stay, though. First, the only elevator in the hotel broke, so everybody had to walk up to their floors. Luckily, we had already checked in so we didn't have to carry our luggage all the way upstairs, but I felt bad for this older couple who was taking a break at our floor because they still had more to go. Also, their cable satellite was down so there were hardly any TV channels, but they made up for this by letting each guest have a free pay-per-view movie a night. Overall, our stay was quite enjoyable. I don't know if all rooms were as comfortable as ours, but I would stay here again if they were.

Worst hotel stay ever
By Kathryn J. Timmons, 7/18/08
When we arrived the receptionist didn't look up from the romance novel she was reading to say 'name?' Then she said I was booked in for 1 night, I corrected her to say that I was staying two nights and she said 'well you only have one confirmation number, ok?' So I showed her my reservation print out she just tutted and said 'ok' again. When we booked on a discount website we booked for three people, and the Tremont accepted our offer. When we arrived we asked for a room with two beds as it was my husband, his friend and myself sharing the room. The reception then told us they only do king size beds, she then proceeded to call security on us. I asked her why she was calling security and she replied so we could be escorted to our room so as to insure only 2 of us stayed. I told her we would make other arrangements for the 3rd guest, luckily we had friends staying in a much nicer hotel (for the same price!) who had an extra bed. She should have just told us that he couldn't go up to the room, no need to call in the heavies! Also the hotel should not have accepted our offer with 3 people in the room if they have rooms with only 1 bed! I just think she needs to learn manners, make eye contact with the customers and get a new job. The lady who was working with her was lovely but she herself was a weapon! I have never been so spoken down to in my whole life! I used to work in 2 hotels of a similar size and star level and was really disappointed with the horribly incapable staff and the rank decor. I would rather stay in a hostel than this hotel! Avoid at all cost.

A Nasty Place
By Ziggy, 3/16/08
Be forewarned, this hotel charged my credit card in full before I even arrived. Once we arrived and saw what we were getting, we were told that we had prepaid and it was non-refundable. I have stayed in $25 hotels that were better than this one...NASTY!!

Don't do it...
By Richard and Jim, 2/29/08
This is a downtown hotel that takes advantage of the business traveler. The city of Chicago gets overbooked often - McCormic Place (the convention center) is HUGE - so it's no problem to keep the Tremont full of unsuspecting travelers because it's full of much needed hotel rooms. Starwood knows this which is why they have not invested anything in this hotel. My room was moldy, dirty, smelly.. the sign that says overnight drycleaning has not been updated - the drycleaning takes 48 hrs., if it does not get lost... There is no wireless internet, no amenities, no service - and that weird pesticide smell in the lobby is disturbing. If only somebody would love this hotel and renovate it - it could be a real gem of a boutique hotel. But alas... you are better off at a Super 8 or Motel 6 (at least their rooms are clean).

bad honeymoon
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/13/07
We arrived there very happy. We were on our honeymoon in Chicago!! First impression of the hotel: it is ok, quiet. Second impression, when we entred our bedroom: ops, something strange. The shower was completely dirty, full of hair spread all around the wall and in the bath. I called the reception and asked them to change our room. The manager came, gave us another key, no "sorry for that", nothing. I showed him the shower and he said a stupid "ok". The other chances we met him at the hall he never said "HI", "how is the room?". Very bad service. Very BAD. rception just ok. The mexican guy is nice but the others are not and the manager, I am so sorry, but he is the worst hotel manager ever. Conclusion: dirty, bad service. The location is great, but there are many other hotels that area. Go for another one but not Tremont. If you like your money of course...

Never go back
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/11/07
The front desk people are poorly trained and very incompetent. They do not understand the fundamental priciple of hospitality business. I will write a letter to the corporate headquarter and request the replacement of the hotel manager. Until then I do not recommend anyone to even consider this hotel for your business plan, your vacation or any other purposes. This is the worst hotel in my life experience.
