Not worth it

Small Rooms!! I couldn't get into the shower or sit on the toilet without closing the bathroom door!! The food and drinks are overpriced and the fitness club is $10 a day, no coffee maker, no fridge. I'll take a Hampton Inn any day over this place.

We can't wait to go back
By ,
We are a family of four who loved everything about the Palmer House! Very clean beautiful hotel with an excellent location! When we arrived I requested a coffee pot & frig which arrived right away! The staff was absolutely wonderful & friendly! The pool is alittle small, but the kids didn't care, & hot tub is in a private area which was cool. Whenever we go back to Chicago this is where we will stay!!

Next time I'll look somewhere else
By ,
For almost $300.00 per night I expect certain things and the Hilton usually offers it. What I did not expect was a $40.00 per day parking fee. Many hotels are doing this around the country. I always find somewhere as nice that don't charge or wave the fee.

not worth the price...
By ,
Overpriced small rooms with paper thin walls. Every thing is more money; internet ($15/day), parking ($38/day). No coffee in the room, but an overpriced Starbucks in the lobby. Not to mention every employee is looking to get in your pocket. Other than the location, not much benefit to this hotel.

Wonderful hotel
By ,
The hotel is historic and the lobby is awesome. If you like an old, grand feel to your hotel than this is the place for you. The concierge's were all terrific at helping us with directions, dining suggestions and reservations. We were upgraded at no charge to a room with 2 bathrooms when we checked in. Clean and well maintained. Pool is small, but we barely used it. Location is good to Millenium Park and the start of Miracle mile shopping. Close and convenient bus/subway stops for everything else. We had our 10 year old son with us and he loved it, as he's very in to architecture.

Unbelievably AWEFUL!
By ,
This place over booked there rooms and did not honor my reservation for 2 rooms with 2 queens in each. Then they offer to add cotts to each of the rooms to make up for the missing beds, but decide to charge me $40 for them. I have never met more rude employees and managers then i have here. When i got to the room, i found a spider crawling on the bed. I would never ever recommend anyone stay at this hotel, go anywhere else but here

A classic
By ,
We got a very good rate (due to the time of year no doubt), and managed to score an excellent room, the kind with two bathrooms (which we liked as much for the rarity of it as for the actual convenience). I should say that the rooms are not glorious, just pleasant (the lower-priced ones are much nicer than they used to be since the makeover). A very small percentage of the rooms have any kind of view; book the Hyatt or Sofitel if you crave views of the lake or the skyline. The hotel's public spaces are just magnificent. There are other stately hotels in Chicago, of course -- the Blackstone is one -- but none has the beaux arts grandeur of the Palmer House. Lockwoods (lobby restaurant) is surprisingly good, but definitely expensive and a bit overpriced (we got 20% coupons which made it about right). $14.99 per day for internet is irritating, but most upscale hotels do sport hefty charges nowadays. I used public transportation so I wasn't worried about the enormous parking fees. The location is about perfect for some travelers: the Art Institute (which is free in February!), Millennium Park, theaters, some museums. It is less good for night life, and indeed for Chicago's best restaurants (and best value restaurants) it's better to be in River North or the Gold Coast than the Loop. But the Palmer House is incredibly convenient for taking the El (Midway Airport is 25 minutes by train, for $2.25, which beats the heck out of a $50, 45 minute cab ride from O'Hare!). I love this place, for all its quite obvious flaws. If you're the kind of person who is bugged by the defects sometimes mentioned in reviews of the Palmer House, then by all means stay somewhere else and leave plenty of vacancies for me and others like me...

Palmer turned my awful Chicago trip into a smile
By ,
It was my first time in Chicago. Im not a big city girl and obviously that was written all over my face. I was caught in the spinning door of a shopping store where 2 men held me inside by not letting the door continue to move and robbed me. I felt so helpless and my fabulous Chicago trip went right down the drain. After getting back to the Hotel I decided to go grab some soup at the Lockwood Restaurant as I did the night before. I was so happy with my waiter Javier that I went back night after night durning my stay. That night however, since I was broke I told Javier I would not be eating as well as I had the last few days ( THE FOOD IS FABULOUS) He asked me why and I told him my story of being robbed just a few hours before. To my surprise Javier filled my glass up with wine and said dinner is on the house! I didnt want to take advantage of the situation (the food isnt super cheap...) but Javier didnt care. He brought me a huge salad that I didnt even order. My faboulous dinner with delicious mashed potatoes, bread, butter and made sure my wine glass was never empty. They brought me a fantastic molten chocolate cake and spiced hot wine for dessert. I know this meal was not cheap but according to Javier, they wanted to give back to me what I had taken away that night. NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS DID I EXPECT SUCH FANTASTIC SERVICE and it was so nice to get back that positive feeling towards a stranger and realize there is so much more good in this world then bad. I went to bed that night thankful to be safe and more then happy with my stay at the Palmer House. I have to go back to Chicago again Tuesday for business (ugh) and you can bet I will be staying at the Palmer house again with a fat tip for Javier and a little bit more self awareness! THANK YOU PALMER HOUSE!

No, No, No

The hotel has a beautiful lobby. Very large. I think the ceilings in the lobby were at least 3 stories tall. Wonderful architecture. Very classy. Now to the rooms. I had a King room that I booked on Priceline. You don't get to select the type of room on priceline like you do on expedia, orbiz, or any other travel site, so I had to call to make sure I had a King room. I was also told by a friend to ask for the more renevated room, which I was able to get, (I guess). The room was very very small. the bed was about 6 or 7 feet from the door. The room had a desk and a chair, but no extra comfy chair. No dresser to store my clothing. The ice bucket and two glasses were stored in the closet because there was no room to put it. The flat screen tv was mounted on the wall but a whole in the wall where the cable comes from was right in the middle of the wall (tacky) including all the wires to the tv halfway hanging down from the tv. (tacky again). The bathroom was ok, small but ok. I order room service, a $12 cheeseburger and soda turned out to be $32 after state tax, city tax, room service fee, 18% gratuity for room service orders. And the guy acted like he wanted a tip when he brought in the tray. Seriously?? A soda in the vending machine was $2.50 and so was bottled water. Luckily there was a 7-elevan down the street for my late night cravings. I put the do not disturb sign on the door because I wanted to sleep in late that next saturday morning. At 8am I am waken up by vacuuming by my door. Mind you the bed is close to the door. I felt like I was being punked. I guess do not disturb in only to keep the maids from knocking on your door. They didnt finish vacuuming the long azz hallway til and hour and a half later. There was no view from my window, only the back fire escape and the building next to me. I would never stay at this hotel or suggest anyone stay here.
