Horrible
By Brent K, 9/27/12
Ive read ALL the reviews on here multiple times, thinking this must be an awesome hotel for the price. I WAS TOTALLY WRONG!! I have no idea where these people were staying!!! Trust me stay away from this dump!!! Ive spent the night at MANY Places before but this one is the worst. Just to make sure you believe me if you plan on booking call and make sure the side parking lot is done with maintence before you stay! Me and my family had to park at the spare lot two blocks away (behind funeral home) and carry our bags thru a half lit alley-in the dark, in this broken pavement alley we were confronted by beggers begging for change, after I said I had none they demanded I give them some donuts from our box of dunkin donuts(which is a few blocks away). After I refused they start cussing us in front of my family. I then felt completely upset that we went to our room and started packing. You can not street park after dark because of the city, and the beggers know this. Also just wait to you see these dated rooms! HA! Wait till you see these 30yr old comforters and the soap scum bathroom walls!! Just wait! You will regret it, and be thinking the same thing I did when I read all these reviews before I booked it.

Nice and quaint
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/22/11
Stayed there for a Cards/Cubs game...very nice and quiet. Located in a peaceful setting in Oak Park. 1 block from the L. The room was very nicely decorated and we fell in love with the bathroom...updated fixtures and amenities. Will stay here again!!!

Love it!
By Crystal, 5/14/10
We always stay at the motor inn and find it very nice and convenient. The area is great for walking. Tons of places to eat and shop nearby. Food in the hotel was good too. We stay here every year!

Great Hotel for Chicago Trip!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/8/08
The room was very large and clean! The hotel price was the best found for a spring break vacation in Chicago. The parking was included in the price and it was a short walk to the El to get downtown Chicago. We ended up coming back to the hotel for dinner and it was a wonderful surprise at Poor Phil's. The food there was excellent for the price and a very generous portion! This is a very quaint and unique hotel. Really enjoyed our stay! Not a place for small children if you're looking to entertain them. We were there to see Chicago so it is excellent for that purpose.

Staying in the suburbs
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/23/08
We visited in September 2005 and the Carelton is in a very nice neighborhood, within easy walking distance of a great deal of shopping and dining. Their in-hotel bar, Poor Phil's, is wonderful. Being raised in a nearby suburb the el did not bother me. Glad to see the shopping and grocery withing walking distance. Rooms were quite large and clean but pricey! Enjoyed the stay and eating outside on the patio in the fall.

Always stay here!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/17/07
We have been staying at the Carleton of Oak Park for 16 years - about 4 nights a year. We have always received great treatment from the front desk, housekeeping, and the restaurants. We enjoy Oak Park's quaint feeling, we have fun taking the El nearly everywhere, and love that it's convenient to the freeway. We don't even consider staying anywhere else in the Chicago area. Love the Frank Lloyd Wright suite and the 19th Hole suite.

The Motor Inn isn't the best way to go
By Shauna, 9/25/06
Upon checking in we had a fairly rude clerk who acted like it was my fault when they lost my reservation. We thought we would save some money and stay in the Motor Inn section...never again. The rooms are basic but they leave a lot to be desired. First of all you have no control of the temp of your room. When we called looking for a thermostat we were told "the air kicks on about every 20 minutes" so half the time we were hot and the rest cold. I have stayed in some pretty bad hotels and have never come across this before. There is a little kitchen that includes 2 burners but they don't offer any pots or pans to cook with so it is pretty pointless. For some reason our TV would turn on and off by itself and the remote would only work at times. The best things about the place were the maids and Poor Phils. I think if I had known this stuff before hand I would have paid extra to stay somewhere else and that is why I am putting this out there. If none of this would bug you and your happy with paying $100 a night you aren't going to get something better. It is only a block from the train and on the other side are some cute stores and places to eat!

Poor service mars visit to this hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/7/06
Granted, I stayed at this hotel during a heat wave in August, but with my room located on the west side of the building, the air conditioner had a particularly hard time keeping up. After staying one night in an uncomfortable room, I asked at the front desk to be changed to a room on another side of the building that wouldn't take the afternoon sun. I was told to come back later after this particularly unhelpful desk attendant said she would ask her manager (who happened to be sitting at a desk behind an open door). I was gone all day (since sitting in a hotel waiting for the help to decide to actually be of service wasn't on my itinerary) and when I returned in the evening, there were no other rooms to be had. A room fan is all that saved us and luckily I generally pack a small one for noise. Upon checkout when asked if the stay was comfortable I replied no. The same unhelpful desk attendant then asked if I knew how to work the air conditioner! And, did I call the desk to ask about it! Then when asked to give them another chance sometime, I replied that wouldn't be happening. I would not recommend this hotel based on the service alone to anyone else. (This review doesn't include the 2 other incidents I witnessed of other people having complaints and voicing them at the front desk).

Found a Jem
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/23/06
Needed to stay in Chicago for a current convention only to find the pricing out of line. Saw some nice reviews about the Carleton Hotel and decided to try them. What a find!! Wonderful hotel with a personal touch. Spacious rooms compared to downtown at a reasonable price. Excellent fine dining at Philander's Restaurant, loved the live Jazz! Nice outdoor cafe for breakfast and lunch called Poor Phil's. Very easy and convenient to reach downtown via the commuter train or expressway. They even had free highspeed wireless internet. I can see why they were almost sold out. I would recommend them highly!
