you can do better
By T, 9/6/11
As part of a wedding party I had to stay in the hotel. Its old, but old doesn't have to mean falling apart. It needs some serious up keep. Brown water came out of the shower faucet at first, the wall paper could use some love, the base boards and carpet as well. The carpet had been patched and it was pretty stained. Cracked tiles in the bathroom and the one that were in there looked like a 4 year old put them in, plastic tub in the shower that had been caulked together where it had a crack. The tub also shifted quite a bit because it was never set right. Picketers outside were quiet but still there. The room just didn't feel like a clean place. I've stayed in much better. I didn't mind that the room or bathroom were small. Hey its a hotel room, you use it just to sleep. The rest of the time your out doing your thing and seeing the sights. Plus that is just how big the rooms were back in the day. As a place to have a wedding or reception it was great. I just would have rather stayed some place else. It is in a fantastic location on Michigan Ave.

Stay Away!
By Charlain, 8/18/11
What did I dislike? Where to begin...the food isn't good, the service is just awful, & the shabby rooms (I changed rooms because of loud, clanking pipes) were h-o-t! Limited air conditioning, with no ability to control the temperature, just the sad little fan. Just awful.

Location, Old World charm,and Accomadating
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/27/11
Location, location, location, the best in downtown. It had the look of old world charm. The staff went out of their way to assist me with any request, including printing my boarding passes. My room was upgraded, as I checked in late, to a King bed with four lush pillows. It does need a bit of paint here and there but overall I would highly recommend this hotel, and its affordability as compared to other downtown hotels. The most beautiful ballroom ever, if you care to practice your waltz or tango!

This place is a dump, and should be delmolished
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/15/10
The rooms were horrible, dark, dungee, and barely clean. Thiis place really needs to meet up with the wrecking ball. Worst room / hotel I have ever stayed in over 40 years of traveling the world.

Horrible! Horrible! horrible!
By Naoto, 9/2/10
This hotel is simply BAD. It smells like cheap soap. Bed making people came in at 18:30 because "they were busy". "Consierge" turned out to be a bellhop. Front desk knows nothing. You better avoid this hotel unless you have nowhere to go.

Good Price For a Big City Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/16/10
Second time here - If you need a clean room and good/safe location - this is IT. Not the Palmer/Blackstone/Conrad Hilton - but the same neighborhood. Not a restored building (yet) but great value for those that need a place to sleep. Small, old fashioned size rooms are great and very clean. Only regret is no real nice restaurant on premises. The entire first floor has been newly paved over in marble and there is no quiet, relaxing, cozy areas to eat or drink in.

Misled by positive reviews. Avoid this place.
By WT, 10/15/09
This hotel was frightening in its state of disrepair. Our room smelled of mold and sewage. The wallpaper was peeling. Seriously, I would not recommend this place if you have kids there is peeling paint everywhere and it looks decades old.The bathroom door wouldn't close. Walls are extremely thin and any noise inside or out is LOUD. We were on the 12th (top) floor and it sounded like we were on the street level with the windows open. The heat did not work. The windows made me think of jail cells being roughly 1ft X 1ft. Someone mentioned a rude bartender - yep he's there.

well worth the visit
By victor, 9/4/09
i thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this hotel.A nice large spacious and clean room which had been renovated recently with a new plasma TV with loads of cable channels including ESPN ESPN2 ESPN NEWS which being a sports fan was great. I had a slight problem with the showerhead in the bathroom and rang the front desk and 15 minutes later th maintenance man had been and replaced it with a new one. With its great location just a 5 minute walk to the Loop i will be back again

Great Experience!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/29/09
I was a little nervous having read all the negative reviews but decided to give this place a try and I'm so glad we did. I went with a group of 7 people and we all had a great experience. The valet was very courteous and prompt in both taking our cars and bringing them back. We decided to park our cars and walk/bus everywhere, and the location made that very easy. It was so close to everything - the museum campus, shopping, dining and Grant Park are within minutes. The front desk was very helpful when we asked about dinining and entertainment suggestions. They even allowed us to check in 4 hours early and held our bags in a locked room the day of our checkout so we could explore the city a little longer before leaving. We had two connecting double rooms in the south tower. The rooms were very spacious and clean. The only issue we had was the door handle was broken on the connector door in one of the rooms so we couldn't get the door open. I called the front desk and a maintenance worker arrived in less than 10 minutes and fixed the door, so we had no complaints. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a great place to stay in downtown Chicago.
