Now for a bit of reality
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/19/11
Price, location, value, and overall offerings for a budget hotel are second to none. From the sound of some of these reviews here, I am thinking this is a different place than the one I just stayed at. To stay at a budget hotel and expect the Waldorf is quite silly, then to rate it poorly because of that type of thing is dishonest and does not provide consumers the information they need to make a decision. Now for the review, as with anything, it is what you make of it! The lobby is large and looks as though this place was at the top of the hotel game before all the Trump type mega Towers were built. The hotel had a restaurant, bar, tiki bar, and out door bbq type eatery. There was a grocery store and a CVS across the street and a Walgreens just down a block...each room had a refrigerator, so purchasing some beverages from the places mentioned was a breeze. The grocery store even sold chicken already cookd such as lemon pepper and breaded chicken as well as other foods. Buying this meal and sitting around the pool to eat, saved us some bucks and allowed us to further enjoy this hotel. About the noise, come on...if you are looking for a sleepy little New England bed and breakfast, again I say you better stay elsewhere! This is Miami, people are here to have fun, lighten up a little and soak up the enjoyment! With South Beach only 5 miles away, there is plenty of atmosphere here, from the people to the attitudes, but if you really want to see some interesting sights, take the drive down to Ocean Ave at South Beach...oh my! As far as this location, it is in Sunny Isles which is a decent area and we had no concerns at all about safety. Ok back to the rooms, nice, no carpets (which is good because of the sand and water), has refrigerator, kitchenette (some rooms only). Once you get past the fact that this is not a high rollers place and accept that it is a value brand hotel, the quicker the stuffed-shirts will enjoy this place. This was a great 2 day pre-amble for our 4 days at Marathon Key, and since we went in expecting little, we were greatly surprised. By the way, I read some complaining about the fee at checkout, they get you for 8 bucks a day for parking if you self park, which is a lot across the main road in front of the place, or they can valet you for 2 more bucks a day, and they don't even expect a tip.Another fee is a 8 buck a day hotel fee, which is for the free shuttle service and some other stuff not sire what...not really a big deal, I just figure it into the price after all its only $8. Lastly, I guess there is a free complementary breakfast, which we did not have...better ask at the front desk. All in all this place (for what and where it was) gets good marks, and I would have no problem returning, which is how each of the other adults in my party felt (4 adults and 2 rooms, everyone feeling the same about this hotel).

WORSE EXPERIENCE EVER IN A HOTEL
By Red, 7/17/10
The staff is very unfriendly and extremely unproffessional including their management. The pictures shown on their website make the place look clean and nice, but this is far from the truth. There is mold in the bathrooms which is unhealthy and can cause health issues down the road. Their showers don't work properly and scald you. The carpets are old and damp and give off a horrible smell. The pool was nice and the view of the beach, but this was still not enough to provide the mini-vacation experience I even remotely wanted. I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL TO ANYONE AS LONG AS I HAVE AIR IN MY LUNGS.

Great Location, Old Hotel, Needs to be Refurbished
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/9/10
My wife & I arrived Feb. 22nd, 2010 for a 7 day stay. We had read all the reviews so we were prepared. Bought cleaning supplies from the grocery store across the street and spent several hours cleaning the bathroom & kitchenette. Our sheets were not changed once so we washed them ourselves in the self laundry room on the main floor. Towels were changed everyday. Air conditioning ran all the time could not control it, I finally caught a cold. Walls are thin, thought the baby who was crying all night was next door but was actually 2 doors down the hall. We bought paper plates/bowls, palstic cups and utensils. Ate breakfast, (toast/ cereal/ fruit) bought lunch in the grocery store and ate dinner in the many resturants in the area. The main mall is only a $8.00 cab ride away. Great location, right on the beach. We paid $135.00 per night, the resort next door $477.00 per night, same beach, same sand, same ocean. Would return only because of the price and location.

best vacation ever
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/6/09
reading the reviews I think we must be talking about two different places. This is the Thunderbird on Collins Ave sunny Isles Beach. We stayed seven nights in April 2009. The grounds were lush, tropical colorful, immaculate, workers cleaning every inch first thing every morning. The entrance is lovely. You pay for parking, valet was perfectly acceptable. The restaurant food was home-cooked, breakfast included home made potatoe fried canadian style with bits of pepper and onion, service was very friendly. The french canadian night club friendly but nearly emply, the outdoor bar clearly a local fave, very jolly, hugely popular french bartender, music, bring your fave, CD and she'll pop it right in. The room was shabby, but hey, we are there for the beach. The tiled floors are best because of the sand you track in constantly, carpet would be ruined. Not enough towels in room for four people getting salty several times a day. The cleaning ladies were present at all times in hallway and always offered a friendly hello. Beach chairs are included in parking fee $10.00, they bring them in at 5:00 pm, a little early for us but by then we're cracking our first beer on the beach so we don't mind. There are wooden chairs on the beach that don't get taken in, just move to them. Also lovely well constructed tiki huts on the beach and pool deck for shade. We loved it so much made more reservations to go back to the Thunderbird only five months later, couldnt wait to get back. Above all we loved the beauty of the grounds, a tropical paradise. The pool are is large with winding landscaped paths meandering around the hot tub, around entrances to stairway, all covered with healthy tropical plants, lots of beautiul palms all spotless. Walk across street to Publix or a Cuban deli for food, sit on the beach all day. A superb value. Very safe. My teenagers have money to eat in the restaurant when they feel like it, then join us on the beach. Loaded with foriegn tourists, makes it so interesting for us plain ole Americans for a change. I asked for a microwave when first arrived, by the time we got back from the beach, there is was on our table. No problem. We were there for a week, the french Karoke was going till 11:00, we enjoyed the Ingleburt Humperdink style music and crowd, very clean cut and pleasant. At night colorful lighting around the bars, restaurants and night clubs was gorgeous, we sat outside and chatted with people from the most incredible places in the world, very friendly. We felt lucky and smart to have chosen The Thunderbird. We live in Michigan and chose Miami because we wanted to be sure of WARM weather. Going again Octobet 15, 2009

i don't will go back !
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/8/09

Good Value if you don't expect a true resort.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/8/08
Great location with excellant beach and pool access. This is one of the older Rat Pack resorts from the 50's surrounded by modern high rises that block the sun of their own respective beaches. The staff was mostly eastern european and french Canadian with their typical aloofness. Not entirely friendly but not entirely rude either. The fitness center is a joke, antiquated garbage in an old utility room, their is a real gym down the street "Miami Beach Fitness" which offers reasonable guest memberships.

Disappointed & Exhausted, 03/08
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/13/08
My Family and I had stayed next door in a motel 50 years prior when The Thunderbird had just opened. We were invited by the Hotel to swim in their pool. It was wonderful being in that pool again. I booked my one nights stay on the internet through the CheapTickets website. The cost was $151.01 plus tax plus parking plus pool fee. Upon arrival on 3/21/08 I found the entranceway jammed with Dollar rental cars. There was no valet assistance with luggage. I checked into my room at 3:15 pm and found that it had not been cleaned or made up yet ! It was very hard to open the hotel room door. At 6 pm I sought a bucket of ice. The ice machine on my floor produced one cube at a time. All other ice machines were out of order ! I enjoyed the hot tub immensly; as well, the oceanfront beach ! I attempted to order room service. But it was all fouled up. The air-conditioning was practically non-existent. I couldn't attempt to open the balcony door for a cool ocean breeze due to the terrible noise coming from both the Tiki Bar and Cafe partyers. I couldn't get to sleep due to the noise into the early morning hours. I vacated at 6:45 am totally exhausted. I had so longed to stay at this location especially at the time of the closing of the nearby Rascal House which I remember from my childhood. My visit to The Days Hotel Thunderbird was extremely disappointing. I am sorry that I did not get there when it was a Best Western !

Will Not Return!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/31/08
Everything I read from reviews on the internet about this motel turned out to be correct. While no one is outright rude, there is no personal interaction at all with the staff. They do not do anything more than they absolutely have to to help you with anything. Air conditioner did not work at all. No hot water, just warm in the bathroom (which is very small and has only a tiny glass shelf to hold your toiletries. The room was not dirty, but was pretty old and tired. You can't sleep in in the mornings because the hallways are paved with tiles and peoples' rolling luggage make very loud noise. Service in the restaurant is atrocious. I asked for a Coke and got a 7-Up! How simple a request is asking for a Coke! Food was very, very basic at best. The concierge (sp?) knows very little about anything. He didn't even know where a golf course was in the area! The best thing about the Tunderbird is the beach and pool area. But, again, you have to pay an extra, mandatory $8 to get a beach towel and beach chair! We were suppose to get a newspaper very day for that $8. Never saw one! I think the worst thing about this hotel is not that its old and musty, I could live with that if the staff had any kind of personality or were in anyway helpful. Even a basic smile would be nice. There is none of that! I would never go there again, nor would I ever recommend it to anyone, ever!

Time for the demolition ball
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/24/08
After paying $151.00 plus tax on the internet I arrived on Friday, 3/21/08. In a crowded entranceway (jammed with rental cars) no one assisted me with my luggage. My room was not ready at 3:15pm. The door to my room needed a push with all my weight in order to get in after using key-card. The central air-conditioning was practically non-existent. The noise into the early hours of the morning prevented me from getting to sleep even with a sleeping aid. Room "service" was horrible ! I ordered and twice repeated my order for a roasted half-chicken, baked potatoe, salad. What arrived was two orders of half-chicken, french fries and cole slaw. There was only 1 working ice machine for the whole 4 story building. At 6 pm it the ice machine produced one cube at a time ! Soda machines were out of order. My experience was a nightmare. I had last been there in 1958 at the time of the opening of The Thunderbird Hotel What a lousy way to end my vacation to Florida's east coast.
