Wouldn't stay there again
Biggest problem with the Shelbourne is its rooms and charging for stuff other hotels provide for free. The room we stayed in looked like it had not been updated in 20-30 years. The carpet was stained everywhere and very outdated, the comforter on the bed looked like something from the 70's, the furniture was broken or damaged (drawers didn't open or fell apart), lights were turned on with a pull chain, the toilet looked like something from a public restroom at a park, and the front door to the room could only be opened half-way because the furniture blocked the other half. Plus the place is half condo / half hotel and we were on the 14th floor next to a condo apparently that you could look into if you stood on the balcony... kinda creepy. The door to the room also looked like it had been kicked and smashed against alot. Beware as well, they charge you for the room safe separately, regardless if you use it. I thought the sign in the lobby said you would be charged automatically if you used the safe, so we didn't but apparently that wasn't the case. $3 per day for something we didn't use. On top of that they charge to hold your bags after you checkout. Our plane left a few hours later so we asked them to hold bags after the noon checkout.... cost $2 per bag for that as well. Maybe this is common, but I've never had to pay for a room safe I didn't use or holding a bag before (other than tipping).
On the plus side, the pool is nice and clean. You can order food at a counter near the pool and they will bring it to you and charge to the room. Prices were reasonable and the food was good. We enjoyed our time at the pool. There is beach access from the hotel and the beach is beautiful (and topless apparently, who knew). The view from our room was also great, we were on the 14th floor with an ocean view. It was very nice, despite being able to see into the room next to us and sitting on $5 plastic chairs. The doormen were friendly and helpful as well.
We were only there for 2 nights, but I heard they have newly renovated rooms... if you stay there, just recommend a newer room and you'll probably be okay. We should of done that, but it was the last stop on our honeymoon and we didn't feel like repacking/unpacking again.
