Not bad for the frugal traveller

Definitely not luxury, but not bad, either. A very retro-looking hotel which has certainly seen better days: the lobby is something out of a cheesy Vegas hotel (lots of cheap marble and bronze paneling), the carpets are worn, and the windows need washing. Watch out for the parking garage, too: the spots are about as tight as you can possibly get and you might worry about your rental getting dinged.
But, for $80/night there's still lots to like. Reasonably clean rooms, friendly staff, a pool/bar area, and the beach is about 50 feet out the back gate. The area outside the hotel is predominantly hispanic, with lots of great, inexpensive restaurants and bars with a vibrant atmosphere. Walk west 20 minutes and you'll be in Normandy Square, which has more great restaurants and a weekend bazaar.
Manage your expectations and the Golden Sands can be an inexpensive blast from the past; spend some time in the area and you might find that North Miami Beach can be just as fun (if nowhere near as glitzy) as South Beach.
