Will not be a repeat customer

My husband and I travel frequently for our jobs. He is a pilot and I was a flight attendant. I am also an experienced travel ball parent, having stayed in various hotels and motels all over the US and abroad. Trust me when I say... The 2 rooms offered to me were the worst I have ever seen.
I am sure this hotel was once a beautiful sight. But now, it is a rundown, and in my opinion, unsafe hotel. First I will list the positives:
The staff was very nice, working with what they have.
The pool deck is lovely, something right out of old Hollywood, and well maintained.
Right on the beach.
Clean sheets and towels.
Now the Negatives:
The first room was on the 6th floor..very old narrow and dark hallway with smelly worn out carpet. Door did not seat properly and did not lock. Room had newer furniture but was so small I felt trapped...low drop ceiling. Walls and ceiling were old but had a fresh coat of paint slapped on, and I mean literally slapped on. Veranda was covered in cigarette butts and rail was rusty. This floor felt like a fire trap to me. I asked to be moved.
Next room was on the 4th floor. Cleaner hallway and carpeting.. slight smell. The room was a little larger. door locked. sheets and towels were clean. cigarette butts on veranda. I kept this room for safety purposes even though there was mold on the airconditioning vent and the ceiling extending 4 feet from the vent. Bathroom ceiling tiles were moldy and water stained, falling out of frame.Closet was removed from hall with just an empty space and mismatched floor where it once was. Moldy grout between tiles in bathroom.
I did not sleep well and checked out the following morning before 11:00. I was told I would not be charged for the second night since I checked out before 11. I was given a check out reciept with a credit for the second day.
Now, I see that I was billed for both days. When I called to see what happened the gentleman told me that I was given a credit to my account for the HOTEL.. not my credit card. I have never ever had this happen to me. I was staying on a per night rate, not a special rate, this I would understand. That doesn't even make sense. Why would I need a credit for a hotel I'm checking out of.
I have had to check out of many hotels early over the years and have never been charged for days I did not use. Check Your bill and check your credit card or debit card for charges. They have told me that they will issue me a refund in 2 weeks. I'll update if I see it.
If you must stay here, ask to see the room first. Try to arrive before evening so that you can find alternate lodging if neccessary. I am sure some of the ocean view suites on the first few floors would be livable. Just look at your room before you sign or give a credit card. Safety and health were my concerns as I had my children with me. I wonder if newer hotels are held to a higher safety standard...exp. wheelchair accessible, wider hallways and doors, clearly marked emergency exits. As for me, there will be no repeat visit.
