Avoid this hotel

Checked in just before midnight, moved all our cases into the room, settled in, put our daughter in bed, and then discovered the toilet didn't flush. We noticed the toilet hadn't been cleaned properly and now we understood why - I'm sure the hotel knew or should have known that it didn't work so we should never have been put in this room in the first place.
Reception moved us to another room down the corridor, had to wake daughter up, closes cases etc and move to another room. Right outside the window of this room was the noisy air-conditioning machinery for the hotel, by this time its about 1am but couldn't sleep well with the noise outside.
Generally the hotel is old/stale and unclean.
When checking out there was confusion about the billing which I thought I had resolved with the reception desk. Later a new amount appeared on my credit card, I rang the hotel to resolve but was put on hold (international call) for a long time. I rang again and was told they were all busy. I finally spoke to someone and thought I had resolved the issue but (long story short and involving the credit card company) there was ongoing confusion that could have been resolved quickly had the hotel had a minimum level of competence and communication skills in the first instance.
When you check out of a hotel you expect that is the end of it and certainly don't expect calls a month later chasing down more money. My experience was the hotel was very keen to get money off me but couldn't care a damn about my check-in experiences or the inconvenience of having to move room or their own complicity in the billing errors.
Normally I wouldn't comment, however this stay came on the back of another bad experience at the Hilton Garden Inn Tribeca in NYC so I think Hilton is losing it and Doubltree in Nowalk in particular is best avoided.
