The American Riviera
By Steve, 11/21/09
We love this hotel. The rooms are large and well-decorated, the staff is friendly, the grounds are lush with flowers and palm trees everywhere, the pool is beautiful, and the location directly across from the beach is gorgeous. We also enjoy the breakfast buffet in the cafe. It's a great way to start the morning. This hotel is expensive, but it is worth it.

beware the trains
By paul, 03/31/08
The rooms were nice and clean and very comfortable. Getting assistance from the housekeeping was very difficult and the worse part of the stay was the trains. The trains ran behind the hotel and beginning at 5:00 am you could hear and feel the train come by several times a day. We ordered food at poolside and forty minutes later they returned stating they did not have that item, we ordered another item and waited another forty minutes. Definitely not worth the money we spent!!!

Amtrak
By Sue M, 01/16/08
At first, the Fess Parker Doubletree appears to be a nice place to stay. The concierge was helpful. We had an oceanfront room. All was well until we were awakened some time around 4 am by a train whistle. The next night, same thing. We asked the manager to relocate us to more insulated room. This muffled the sound of the train whistle some what, but not entirely. The reason we booked the facility was because of the tennis courts on sight. We booked a court with the concierge. We arrived at the appointed time to find the court being washed (on Sat. at 10:00 am). We had to go to a public park because the courts would take several hours to dry. If you are thinking about staying at the Doubletree, you should be a sound sleeper.

HORRIBLE HOWLIES
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/24/07
LOUSY FRONT DESK SERVICE. WE HAD AN UPPER FLOOR ROOM AT OVER $400/NIGHT FOR SPECIAL OCCASION. THERE WAS A FAMILY OF FOUR ABOVE US, TWO OF WHOM WERE UNDER 5 - RUNNING IN THE ROOM UNTIL 2 IN THE MORNING. THE FRONT DESK WOULD DO NOTHING ABOUT IT (THEY HAD OBVIOUSLY PAID MORE FOR THEIR ROOM THAN WE HAD). WHEN WE CHECK OUT IN THE MORNING, I ASKED THE FRONT DESK MANAGER WHAT THEY WERE GOING TO DO TO MAKE IT RIGHT WITH US. HE SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO EITHER. I'LL NEVER STAY ANYWHERE NEAR THAT PLACE AGAIN. NEXT TIME I WILL STAY AT THE EL ENCANTO!!!!!!!

Hugely Dissappointed
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/30/07
First thing you need to know about this property is that aside from the vast, poorly landscaped asphalt parking lot which surrounds most this class B- hotels "mountain view" rooms, you then have to look beyond the very active Amtrak line which appears to run adjacent to and all along most of the property's eastern boundary. But then you also have to overlook the industrial rock mining facility right on the other side of the rail line! To the staffs general credit they were indeed pleasant and responsive in relocating my guest and I to a garden view room. I suppose I could have been fairly well placated except that I immediately noticed this new room (121) happened to be located directly across the hall from a stank little circa 1970 workout room with a single closet turned "massage room". Yup, what should have been one of the most active areas of the building was indeed just as quiet as could be at least until the boisterous yakking of morning housekeeping detail got started in the interior hallways, but I’m quite astonished that Hilton/Doubletree has the audacity to include either “resort” or “spa” in the name of this property. Don’t be fooled by the pictures on Expedia or the hotel website either! Granted, the recently refurbished rooms are indeed large, attractive and comfortable (definitely avoid the mountain view rooms though) but the public spaces are all very, very tired, poorly lit and truly in need of a major renovation. Overall, even at $150/night this place would have been highly disappointing.

Comfortable night
By Sandra, 01/28/07
We enjoyed our stay at Fess Parkers. We were only there one night, but we ate at the Cafe for dinner and our waiter Dominick was a real pleasure. We had drinks and listened to the piano player and then slept in the most comfortable bed ever. The pillows were so good I came home and found them online and ordered them! Sincerely, Sandy P

Poor Value
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/25/06
The location is great, but not worth the price. Aside from location and room size, we could have had the same thing at a Motel 6 at 1/4 the price. The restaurant service was beyond terrible and in room dining took almost an hour to arrive. The rooms are very poorly insulated. You can hear kids running up and down the hall at all hours. No problem with the kids, just poorly built rooms. We could hear our neighbors well past midnight. Calls to the front desk did no good. If you are looking for a relaxing resort, this is not the best place for it.

Unsanitary, Unsafe for children
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/19/06
We visited with our two small children and encountered two serious problems. Within minutes of checking into our room, we found a comb full of hair, a bent coat hanger, and a capsule of prescription medication lying on the floor! We then went to the pool only to discover a naked toddler splashing about merrily. We left the pool and returned an hour later to find the child still there and still naked. Too bad--the surroundings and the hotel itself are gorgeous.

Best in SB for the Money You Spend
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/07/06
Courteous service from the moment you arrive, a beautiful oceanside location, convenient dining, gorgeous grounds, well-appointed rooms with everything you could ask for, and many other features too numerous to mention make Fess Parker's Doubletree the best you can find in Santa Barbara for what you spend. My wife and I have been coming here annually for the past ten years. Does it compare with the Biltmore? Well, almost. But if you consider that "almost" comes at about one-quarter the price, you'll be willing to put up with the small differences. This is the first place that comes to mind when I think of getting more than my money's worth in lodging.

Stay Nowhere Elese
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/02/06
First things first...yes, I know this is on the high end of the spectrum of hotel room prices. So, if you're trying to be cost conscious, this is not the place for you. If, however you want to indulge, stay here. The staff is friendly (the dorrmen knew our names when we'd head out for dinner) and very helpful (whether booking a tour, reservation, or bringing up a razor which I forgot). The location is great, far enough away as to not in the middle of chaos, but close enough to for a nice walk to the pier.
