5 reviews for Palos Verdes Inn, Redondo Beach
Great location/service...bad everything else.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/18/08
The main redeeming quality of this hotel was the view of the ocean from the balcony... though you do look directly at the parking lot first then over several rooftops and then you can see the ocean. Their website states that it was built in 1959 and I don't believe any maintenance has been done to it since. The lobby is hot and dated and when we first arrived only one elevator worked. The room had peeling paint, the shower head was at the proper height for a 4 foot person, rust stains on the bathroom tile from a sink leak that must have been left unattended for quite a while, the paint on the toilet seat was badly chipped and cracked (might have been the original seat from 1959) and worn and stained carpet (but it was clean...my white socks did not turn black walking on it.) The central air conditioning was not. It was a floor unit that blew cold air, but did not remove humidity from the room and it was loud. The refrigerator was small, but worked....too well....everything froze in it. You could tell the pool was something in its' day....it had sliding doors on all sides and a retractable roof. But, none of the doors opened and the roof didn't retract anymore. Handrails were rusted through and the same cigarette butts that were there on Friday when we arrived were still there the following Thursday....so who knows how long they were there. It also didn't appear the pool or spa was cleaned regularly because there was sand/dirt in the bottom of both. We booked the room because it had a pool and spa, but after seeing the sand, we decided not to use it. On the good side...the service was excellent. The rooms were always nicely cleaned and one time we called the front desk for something and they brought it up promptly. Our room was also a good size. It really is a shame that nothing is being done to preserve the hotel. And it wouldn't take much to revive it (little paint, new carpeting, put in regular wall air conditioners and general maintenance and cleaning.) It is in a great location (5 min walk to the beach) and you could tell it was impressive in it's day. If you're looking for nicely appointed room with amenities, look elsewhere. If those things don't matter and you just want a clean room near the beach...go for it.

We didnt like it at all, Shower did not operate at all, hot and cold water came out in spurs, facet on the shower was leaking, badroom door did not close, hair dryer was attached to the aoutlet with a piece of electrical tape unsafe, I told the front desk about the problems but nothing was done, the small prtable refrigerator broke done with my wife's medication in it. The hotel is old, the impresion I got is nobdy cares about the place.I will not recomend, we will stay at the Best Western next door next time.

Never going back
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/11/07
We were mis-quoted the price for two nights, by over $200. The staff was rude on the phone, and once we got here, we found the rooms lacked many of the room anemities it claimed to have. We were disapointed with having to stay here, as well as with the quality of service and condition of the room. The only nice perk was having wireless internet which we used to find a different room for the second night of our stay at the beach.

No expense was made
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/04/06
After reading some reviews about this place, it seemed like a great choice for our family vacation. The service was great when I called them, and our room was ready for an early check in. The good news ended there. We specifically requested a room without a balcony, as we have small children, and I think that was our downfall. Our room was DARK, the curtains didn't pull aside without feeling like you were going to break them. The "city" view was a parking lot (I wasn't expecting much more, but it just added to the experience). The much needed air-conditioner was a portable unit that was LOUD--although it came in handy to drown out the hall noise. There was no refrigerator in the room--apparently you have to order one--and although we requested one the first day, none came available for our entire 4-day stay. This was quite inconvenient as we were traveling with small children. The bathroom sink AND shower both leaked and when you showered, the diverter didn't work well, so most of the water came out the faucet instead of the shower head. The bed itself was comfortable, but the bedding was as small and thin as possible to cover the mattress. Only one elevator was in service, and we were never sure it would take us where we wanted to go. I'm sorry to say I could go on and on. We determined that they must be saving all their money for a full remodel, because this place is not being kept up (at least our room). I would like to say again, though, that the service here was good despite the run-down accomodations. The staff was polite and our room was always cleaned nicely by the time we came back for the day. I really wanted to like this hotel, as we visit this area several times a year, and the price was definitely right.

Great Ocean View-Great Price
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/21/05
We got a nice little room with a great ocean view for $108 on a Saturday night. The ocean view was 'sweeping' from left to right off our balcony, including a spectacular sunset in March. We were on 3rd floor. Unfortunately, the parking lot was directly below us, as well. The rooms were clean, but dated in their appearance. Furnishings were early 1960's. The staff was pleasant and accomodating. The hotel also has a high-end restaurant off the lobby and a Fresh Market and bakery across the parking lot. This is called Bristol Farms. They have a good wine selection and fresh plants and flowers. The pool and spa is very interesting. It is enclosed in a glass building with a retractable roof. It is very large with nice landscaping. They have a semi-private patio below the pool level. We have also stayed at the Portofino in Redondo, which is nicer and closer to the Ocean. It also costs almost twice as much. Since it was our anniversary, I ordered a floral arrangement from Magical Blooms on PCH in Redondo Beach. They are a few blocks from the hotel. Jenny is the owner and she is a spectacular designer. I gave her a budget and she created the arrangement. I think it might have been one of the nicest and most unique floral arrangements I have ever seen. Over-all, I would recommend this hotel if you want an ocean view for a good price in The South Bay.
