lots of $$ for lots of noise

Earlier this month, my family and i decided to take a week between the ending of our kids baseball season and the beginning of football season and travel to Monterey, primarily for the kids to see the Aquarium, but also for the beauty the area is known for. Upon our arrival at the MBI, the first portent that something was amiss was that we were advised by the front desk that there currently was construction going on, but we were assured that it would not affect our stay. We checked in and found our room, 209, settling in for the night. One of the kids discovered that the toilet was leaking and had left a puddle that covered over half of the bathroom floor. The front desk summoned maintenance and it was swiftly corrected. However, the real HORROR awaited us the following morning, when, just before 8AM, we were awakened by the sound of a cement mixer backing up and stopping directly in front of our room. Add in the cacophony of workers barking instructions, directions, (none of it in English) and you have an immediate situation. I approached the desk and was rewarded with the standard apology and a guarantee that the mixer would not be there the next day. What the front desk failed to alert us to was the arrival the following morning, (also at 8AM) of a phalanx of workers who proceeded to pound on anything sticking out of the walls with all kinds of hammers, sledgehammers, whatever was handy. I went directly down to the underground parking lot (13.00/night) in order to call AAA and discuss this issue when i discovered that we had been given a parking ticket for "parking illegally". By this time, my patience was wearing a bit thin, so i approached the front desk and asked why, when i was told at check-in of the cost and more importantly, that it would be added on to the cost of the room, why was i holding this parking ticket. After discussing this non-issue for approximately 10 minutes, the reason became very plain. The front desk had forgotten to give us a pass to put in the window, so the little security scooter could see that we were staying at the hotel!! Then, after a lengthy discussion, the clerk agreed to "graciously" have the hotel cover the cost of the ticket..this time...THIS TIME????..I cant begin to tell you of the frustration we were feeling, until we were introduced to a Brandon Reyes, who was affiliated with the Hotel in some manner. Mr. Reyes really saved our time at the hotel, turning us around from a "No way in hell are we going to come back here" to "We would certainly consider returning"..Mr. Reyes, on his own, credited our stay 75.00/night and promised us that we would be getting a voucher for a free nights stay once the construction was complete. He is one of those people whose path you cross so infrequently, yet he leaves a lifetime impression...
Funny thing is, we had a great time while we were in Monterey. The Hotel is local to almost everything on Cannery Row, and is also close enough to walk to the Aquarium..
Just remember that ANYTHING that near to EVERYTHING is going to be expensive..and if you are going to spend that much money on a stay at the MBI, then i would heartily recommend calling the hotel before you even consider booking and inquire as to the on-going construction and when it will be complete..our stay was 7/24/07 to 7/27/07..
