Not at top tier B&B
First Impressions are so important, especially in the hospitality business. Lack of on site parking is a dilemma but I knew parking may be a problem before I made reservations. The small foyer was nicely decorated with the reception desk to the left in a small alcove. To the right was a step down large living area with cushy chairs and a dining area. I did think it was odd to see black iron gates hanging from the right and to the left of the entry, closing off both areas in the evening. I guess guests are able to use their keys to gain access to the living room but closed sitting areas do not leave a warm and inviting impressions. We were taken to our room, without any additional description of the Inn and what amenities were offered. We thought that was odd, given B&B’s we stayed at wish to make guests feel like they are staying at a friend’s home. A short walk to our room through the court yard shows a very large garden fountain and potted plants to one side of the atrium with small seating on the other end. My first impression it was too heavy weighted on one end leaving crowded seating for guests on the other. Of course this is my opinion, and others may enjoy the court yard as it is. Our room was a very big disappointment. It was decorated with a couple of garage sale mismatched period pieces and the room just looked worn out. A couple of theme pictures on the walls were the extent of the themed room description. Paint was peeling on the ceiling. The head board was loose or broken from the frame. No drapes over the windows, only poorly working roll-up window coverings for privacy. Hard water deposited shower doors, and cheap, painted over stick on vinyl baseboards in the bathroom screams tacky. If you open the bathroom window you literally are staring into the bathroom of the adjoining room. Luckily we didn’t have an uncomfortable introduction with our neighbors. The Inn did offer a wine and snacks in the afternoon. It was alright but nothing extraordinary considering you are paying $200 + a night. I read in an earlier review (tripadvisor), that the Inn serves Charles Shaw wine (2 buck Chuck) and Chas rebutted the reviewers comments by extolling the virtues of CS wine. Chas, you should have left sleeping dogs lie, and let readers think the reviewer got it wrong. Same dirty dishes and glasses from the night before were sitting on the counter in the morning. Don’t look for breakfast any earlier than 8:30am, much less a cup of coffee. No Coffee at a B&B! The breakfast was mediocre at best. Sorry, other than a tasty strudel I expected more than dry scrambled eggs, breakfast links, and sliced sandwich bread at a Laguna Beach B&B. The Eiler Inn can afford to cut corners, knowing their proximity to the main attractions in town will assure occupancy. That may be the case, but customers looking for a B&B in LB need to be aware of the Eiler’s limitations. Replace what is worn, and make individual, personal customer service a top priority. Until improvements are made, vacationers should look at staying at the Blue Lantern Inn in Dana Point.
