Overwhelming perfume odor.
Here's what's right about the place: the rooms are nice in terms of amenities (fridge and microwave, along with comfortable bed), the location is great, and the free breakfast fairly good. The staff was also pretty good.
The severe problem was this: whatever cleaning agent they use in the rooms left such a strong "perfume" odor that my wife was rendered physically ill. I literally had to drive her back home to Redondo Beach (an ~80 mi. round trip) and come back since we couldn't get a refund for the room. This meant that she couldn't participate in the second day of activities at the Scandinavian Festival at Cal Lutheran, which was disappointing.
Sure, my wife is sensitive, but even I had noticeable problems after spending the night. I woke up with significant congestion and it took almost two hours after checkout (and being outdoors) for the tightness in my bronchial tubes to go away and allow me to breathe normally. I shudder to think about what would happen to someone with asthma... Seriously, if _I_ notice it (big, dumb brute that I am), then you are really doing something wrong.
Everything else about the place was fine, even exceptional. But with a room that is rendered literally uninhabitable by noxious chemicals, it kinda ruins the experience.
They seriously need to lay off the cleaning agents (or whatever) - it is genuinely a health hazard. There is really no excuse for it, either - unless, of course, you have a serial killer leaving dead prostitutes under matresses and have to cover the smell of decomp. Otherwise, there is no reason to spray 20 gallons (or whatever) of this sh-t in the rooms. Way, way over the top.
So, if you have asthma or a senstivity to strong perfumes stay away from here. If that kind of thing doesn't bother you, then it might be all right to stay. Needless to say, we'll not stay here again, nor likely in this chain assuming this is a coporate policy.
