Location was excellent, actual hotel just ok
We chose this hotel based on three things, price, location and the fact that it had a pool. We wanted to be downtown and in walking distance to the Gaslamp Quarter; we did lots of research and Best Western Bayside was the best price we could get for an adequate hotel. And the location was absolutely great! You can walk to Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp Quarter (10 minutes), the harbor (less than five minutes), Little Italy (less than five minutes) and Seaport Village (about 10 minutes). So that was just great. It was also very close to major highways. But there was nothing special about the hotel itself. It was clean enough. It's good for a place to crash, you don't really feel like you want to hang out in the room though. The pool and jacuzzi were very clean and we got good use of those. The front desk staff varied, some you felt wouldn't go at all out of their way to help you and some were better. Parking ($7 per day) seemed reasonable. The restuarant next door (where you got your continental breakfast) wasn't so great, very slow service and the food was just ok. Our biggest complaint was the construction going on next door (and which seems as if it will be going on for a long long time - they look to be building a high rise). This began at 8am on a Saturday (!) and the room was not very soundproof. Also, we overlooked the pool and noise from there interrupted an afternoon nap. Apparently higher up rooms have better views.
Overall I think this hotel is ok if you are looking not to pay a ton of money and are basically looking for a place to crash and shower. As I said, we loved the location and the fact we could walk to a ton of places. If we returned to San Diego, however, we'd probably pay up to another $30 a night for another hotel. If we had no choices, however, we would stay here agian rather than staying farther away from downtown.
