Good experience!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/21/10
My husband and I, along with out 2 grandsons took advantage of the hotel's Mcwane Center package last week-end. The front desk was great, allowing us both early check-in and check-out. The staff was very helpful and pleasant. Since we traveled on Amtrak the shuttle service was very convenient although the hotel's location made everything with walking distance. We thought the food was very good...my only complaint was we would suggest a complimentary continental breakfast. All in all, we loved our spacious room and found our experience most enjoyable!

Still checked-in, please come and make my bed.
By Dale, 3/7/09
Checked in wednesday. Thursday evening the room hadn't been cleaned. "Housekeeping has all gone home" (sorry, it didnt occur to me to check up on housekeeping in the middle of the afternoon) got towels delivered, made our own beds. Friday morning, stopped at the front desk to ask them to please remember to do the beds today. Friday evening, still haven't seen the beds made yet. Towels and wastebaskets got serviced. Dirty dishes from last night's room service are still in the room. I'm still holding out that the beds might get serviced tomorrow. If anyone happens to see any housekeeping staff, please send them to room 401.

Never going back...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/27/08
The rooms were great, but the management is terrible. Most of the staff was friendly, but when we had to call about a credit card dispute it took them a week to do anything about it after we called on a daily basis. I would much rather stay at the Tutwiler.

Getting better!
By Osei i, 3/7/08
Over the years 'The old girl' has gone through several changes. In the heyday as a residence for important people, the affluent. In latter years its been closed from lack of use. Investors bought it and remodeled it and now it can be a 4 star hotel. The best feature is it's location,in the herart of the business district, walking distance from city hall, banks, and acentral park. The staff is constantly changing because the experiance gained there prepares them for work any where in the industry. Many entertainers stay there when on tour. Pro atheletes, sports fans and me.

Great Staff! Great Hotel!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/12/06
I had to stay at this hotel for a week on business. My work had put me up at this hotel. Originally when I checked in, there was a slight mix up with my reservation but the staff did everything they could to correct it. I was blessed to be able to meet almost the whole front desk staff and the general manager, and I never had one problem with any of them. They were the most kind people I have ever met. I'm from California, and after meeting the people here, they define "Southern Hospitality". The only complaint that I have is that they need more variety when it comes to the room service menu, but other then that the food was great. I can't wait until my job send me out to Birmingham again.

GM that doesn't care
By Allena, 11/13/06
The required valet service damaged our car. We asked to speak to the General Manager and he said it was his day off and he would speak to us when he comes back to work which was a day after we checked out. The quality of the rooms seemed fine. I did have problems with the bathroom. The towels had hair in them and the shower curtain and all types of nasty items left on them. I felt dirty while taking a shower.

Historic Hotel
By Timothy, 8/8/06
I thought this hotel was one of the nicest hotels that I have stayed at for a long time. I have just recently moved into the area and my company put me up in this hotel and the staff here is terrific. Everyone here is so friendly and willing to help you out with whatever you need. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone I know coming to the area for business or leisure.

Classic Hotel, showing it's age
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/24/06
The location is not that great. Don't expect to walk around at night. The city closes up at 5:00 PM, so a cab or car will be needed to go to the good restaurants. This is a great place to stay if you are working for The Birmingham News.

A Hotel with Some Character
By jack, 5/11/05
This old hotel may have seen better days but with a highly motivated staff and a sense of history it may make a comeback. Rooms are adequate, not luxury but a cut above a motel. The staff however is excellent and we had fun knocking back cocktails at the bar. The restaurant is servicable and the grits, sausage and biscuits great.
