Extremely Rude Service
Visited the Sandy Lane for dinner at Bajan Blu last weekend, and was shocked at the rude service, which totally destroyed the beauty of the hotel and location. Two friends and I arrived at the hotel gate around 6:15 for our 7pm reservation, were initially told we were "too early" and could not enter the hotel for an drink before dinner, and then were reluctantly let in. The first hotel staff member we encountered asked "who we were" and if he could "Google" us. I guess they wanted to know if we were famous enough to warrant decent service? Apparently we didn't meet their Google-able criteria, as we were then chased down and escorted to a table in a dark corner of the courtyard. A staff member stood next to our table while we had one drink, clearly making sure we didn't leave our seats. We were hustled to dinner, followed to the bathroom, and then served by a cadre of people who could not answer questions about the menu, brought us warm white wine, and basically disappeared during the meal. Dinner was not great - I liked the Thai Beef Salad but all our main courses were just so-so. When the check came, however, we were immediately surrounded by staffers pulling our chairs out from the table and asking us if we were finished. During our brief, but expensive, visit, no staff member thanked us for coming to the Sandy Lane for dinner, but we were repeatedly asked if we were "enjoying the service." I was trying to be nice to all the staff members who were clearly ordered to treat me poorly, but I won't be nice here. The Sandy Lane delivered the worst service I have ever experienced in any level of hotel, from the least expensive eco lodge in Guatemala to the most expensive hotel in Johannesburg, and it was clearly their intent to make me feel unwelcome and get me out as soon as possible. It worked. I will never go back and I don't think you should visit Sandy Lane either.
