No bed bugs
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/1/11
We have stayed here a few times and this time for 6 days. Those who criticize the Sylvia are perhaps effete and expecting a 4 star hotel, which it is not. The main point of this review is we stayed in two different rooms over 6 days - NO BED BUGS.

Such a waste of a great location!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/5/10
As a Vancouver resident I've been going to the Sylvia lounge for decades because of its outstanding bay side location and charming facade. Unfortunately that's all it has to offer and now after staying there I give up. What a pathetic operation. A few of the staff - Bruce in the bar - a young French waiter in the restaurant – are great – but most are slow, sullen and unprofessional. And to call the menu and presentation mediocre would be a wild overstatement. I assumed that perhaps the rooms were charming... but no they’re horrible too. Layers of cheap band aid attempts at renovations in the tacky hallways and depressing rooms were reminiscent of a slum lord flophouse and in shocking contrast to the hotel’s charming ivy covered exterior. Wow… whoever is in charge… give up – sell the property to someone who knows what they’re doing. In the right hands it could and should be jewel – unfortunately it’s a joke.

dissapointed, budget style hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/13/09
Positives: Good location for shopping and dining out, good veiw from SOME rooms, Staff were very polite and helpful. Bar and restaurant looked nice Negatives:A backpacker size, old TV!! No hot water/coffee (1 star have this) no fridge. Very Noisy room over a garage -garbage area, with no view. food was ordinary with very watered down fruit juice!! Poached egg came without toast!(a first for us) Entrance looked dirty carpet badly stained/worn, had to handle our heavy long distance luggage up awkward stairs.(Seniors), Room carpet was stained, limited pillows(3) intermittent internet. Shower was bordering on dangerous due to the faulty heat/cool control. 5 out of 10.

Boy what a surprise
By M, 3/2/08
I wanted a two room suite and ended up with two separate rooms (one room far below average) attached to a hallway to a slightly better room. This is not what I ordered when I booked my reservation. When I mentioned my dissatisfaction to the staff their response was "fine" do you want to go someplace else. I was extremely disappointed with my stay, in the room and the staff at this hotel.

Unfortunately bed bugs
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/15/08
I have stayed at the Sylvia many times. The last three or four times I have returned home with bed bug bites. I looked the bites up on the Internet, and they are definitely bed bugs. I actually love the Sylvia, but the bed bug thing is very discouraging.

I recommend it to almost everyone
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/16/07
I've stayed at the Sylvia many times over the past 15 years, and will go back. The location is perfect, they accept pets, and the suites are wonderful for entertaining. (I usually have a dinner party or three while I'm in town.) The bar has a great view! I don't like staying in the new wing, though.. no character.

Quaint hotel lived up to its reputation.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/9/07
The Sylvia Hotel is a gem. The staff was warm and efficient, yet not overly effusive (which I liked). Although I was situated in the smallest room that the hotel had to offer, it was bigger than many European hotel rooms that I've stayed in. Further, although I didn't have a view of the ocean, my street view was lovely, especially in Autumn. The large bed was extremely comfortable and the room was very clean. In fact, I would say that there was very little difference between some of the Fairmount hotels I've stayed at, and, given a choice I would opt for the Sylvia. The only drawback was that the rooms were not as quiet as I would have liked. However, as my corner of the hotel was occupied with quiet people, the noise was hardly an issue. Moreover The Sylvia's location is excellent. No wonder the hotel has so many repeat visitors.

Awesome Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/6/07
It was a great place to stay! I think this is a very under rated place. It is not moderen in it's decore but that is what makes it so special. Walk right on to the beach, and starbucks is just up the street.I will be going back for sure!

Disappointed this year
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/23/07
I must express my deep disappointment with this establishment where we stayed this year for nine nights in late August. I do so sadly. A year ago we thought highly enough of The Sylvia to want to repeat the pleasant experience we had there. But this year, on our arrival, I was presented with the key to a different suite from the one I had booked! When I voiced my reasonable objection, I was told curtly that they “reserved the right to change our rooms without notification.” I informed them that they reserved nothing of the kind. As a potential guest, having agreed on a particular room or suite, I reserve it, and have a right to expect our agreement to be honoured. Surely a hotel has no more right to change a booked room or suite without consulting the customer than a theatre owner has to change the seat number on the ticket that has been bought. Nevertheless, it was a fait accompli, and my wife and I (who are not young) were forced to accept, or go looking for a place to stay with all our luggage in late August. Moreover, the restaurant service was poor, and being on the third (rather than the fourth) floor did make a difference. It put us closer to the street and the nightly shouts of homeless derelicts who, it seems, infest the sea front on English Bay. It put us closer to the odours emanating from the overflowing garbage containers along the front. And the traffic noise was louder. Very sad, as we had so enjoyed it the year before.
