Wonderful For Families

In planning our trip to Duluth, MN., we knew what we needed in a hotel, for us and our children, 2 and 6. We required something clean and inexpensive. Ideally, of course, we'd like a pool, hot tub, sauna, all the standard amenities--but for a great family-friendly price. My husband works for AAA and through AAA we found this hotel, in Superior, WI, just minutes from Duluth. We stayed Sunday - Wednesday and got an unbelievable deal--even better than the AAA discount. For $59.99 (plus tax), we got everything we wanted. Duluth offers many touristy attractions--family fun. In Duluth, you can tour a huge cargo ship (William Irvin) which is now retired and a floating museum. You can walk, rent a family bicycle (fun), or travel in a horse-drawn carriage around Canal Park, which offers many quaint shops and chain or locally owned restaurants. The maritime museum is there as well as the aquarium. You can watch great ships travel through the canal and under the 100 year old, famous, aerial lift bridge. You can take in the view along skyline drive, of the amazing Lake Superior, or take a historic train ride along the St. Louis River. Superior, WI is just across the bridge from Duluth. Barkers Island Inn is a hop, skip, and a jump away. On a park just up from the hotel, on Barkers Island, tour a whale boat (ship) for a fee, play miniature golf, let your kids climb on the new climbers and play equipment, or book one of many types of cruises on Lake Superior with Vista cruises.
The hotel was clean, friendly, and provided the standard hotel options, plus. Without us having to ask, the staff offered a crib and a refrigerator at no extra charge. The crib came with a free stuffed animal gift for our baby. When we discovered we forgot our hair dryer, the hotel provided us one free of charge. The 3-5ft deep pool was perfect for our 6-year-old, and the hot tub and sauna was wonderful for old mom and dad's worn out bodies after walking around Duluth all day. (From 10-11pm it's adults only at the pool, so weary adults can relax without being interrupted by crazy kids.) The hotel also has a friendly restaurant and lounge. The restaurant staff was more than accomodating to us, a family with young children. All of this at a great deal, including room service that was less than the usual outrageous room service pricing. Barkers Island Inn has 2 floors and is fairly spread out. It has multiple secure entrances and we were guided to park by the entrance closest to our room. Situated on a beautiful bay and marina, this hotel was a wonderful surprise and we will no doubt stay there again and again over the coming years.
