Don't let the great location fool you
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/29/11
Recently stayed here for business and expected so much more due to its close proximity to the Civic Center. The rooms were dingy and smelled of smoke, despite being nonsmoking. Some better options in Charleston: Embassy Suites, Marriott, Fairfield Inn, anything except a Holiday Inn Express.

Excelllent Staff
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/25/11
The hotel appears to being updated, looking great...The staff is so helpful, the rooms and housekeeping were on their game for as busy as it was. It was a delight talking with your breakfast lady (missed her name) she made me feel right at home. When I'm back to the area I definitly will stay at this hotel again.

Wonderful Staff
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/12/11
Our stay was made enjoyable by the many courteous, friendly people working at this Holiday Inn Express. The rooms was clean but what made it a great stay were the staff. Thanks so much for your hospitality.

Will not be going back!
By Arminda, 8/6/11
I normally do not write reviews or complain but in this case I thought that it was very important that I share the details of my stay. When I first walked in I thought it smelled dirty. But then when I opened the nightstand drawer I found some old toe nail clippings that were left from a previous guest (many large gross ones) but I would not have said anything about it. Then I had homework due and the internet was extremely slow (had to call our order in at the restaurant instead or ordering online because the internet was so slow I though the place was going to close.) Me and husband wanted to rent an in-room movie and after being told all we needed to do was bring our credit card and put it on file at the front desk then we could. Then still no movie I was then told that the movies on demand were not working for some reason and they would let me know if it got fixed (it was already 11:00.) At this point I still did not complain even when I had to call the front desk the next morning to find out why the TV stations wasn't working at all. Theysaid they didn't really know but would send a technician up to see what the problem was, I said that's ok we are leaving today in a couple of hours. I was still trying to be nice but when I got in the shower and got scalded by a surg of hot water and cut my underarm shaving, I got a little upset. The H20 continued to surg through out my shower and I screamed so loud houskeeping came and ask my husband if I had gotten hurt. Well I had gotten hurt because I jerked so bad the second or third time I busted my elbow on the metal shower fixture. I was scared to put shampoo in my hair because I just wanted to get out but I had to wash my hair because my whole reason for staying was to TAKE A SHOWER because we were doing home renovations and our shower was out of commission. We also decided to stay because our home renovations has put us sleeping in an uncomfortable small bed and we wanted a nice night in a big king bed. After staying at this hotel I was so happy to get back home that was a mess and under construction. Lastly, when we were leaving there were no luggage carts to be found my husband ask and he was told we only have three and they must all be in use sorry. Well my husband is a dialysis patient and cannot lift so I had to carry everthing (and we had quite a bit of stuff) and they had shut down one elevator at that time for some reason and my husband was an hour late for his dialysis appointment. I can say that the breakfast bar was very nice and clean and there was good food. The employees at the front desk were very nice. I am happy that I got a deal on this room from priceline and did not pay full price or I would be very upset. I have also found out if you do have any sort of problem like I had the hotel cannot really help you if you pay through a third party. All they can say is I am sorry this happened to you and I will see that it doesn't happen again. I know it won't because I will not be staying with this hotel ever again. Because of the nice employees and the nice breakfast I am giving this hotel 1 star. I would like to remind you that I am not a complainer I am always the person that lets things go and is easy going so if I am this upset to take the time to write this review (and personally called the manager and made a complaint) something has to be very wrong!!! The location is a plus it is in the vicinity of the entire downtown area. You can walk to the mall and the Civic Center and many great restaurants are close to walk to or have food delivered. Also close to Charleston nightlife and all major hospitals but there are better choices of hotels in Charleston that have the same conveniences (just minutes away) and include a pool or hot tub and have better prices. When I think of a Holiday Inn I think of something I can depend on....uuuuh I guess that was something I learned as a child. TIMES HAS CHANGED.....VERY DISAPPOINTED...Arminda Skinner

I would go back
By Carolyn, 4/2/10
The rooms were very clean and affordable. Overall atmosphere was great. Civic Center and Mall in walking distance. Great breakfast. TV select was lacking. I would definitely stay again. However, would not stay with children. Saw a man urinating onto the sidewalk from the third floor. Told the front desk as I went back in and the lady shrugged it off. The lady acted like it was no big deal. Greatfully, we did not have any children with us. Hotel kept us in plenty of towels. Did not have to call the desk.

Not Like Other HoI Inn Expresses
By uh huh, 7/24/09
Im a priority club member, stay in Hoiliday inns and Expresses all the time; this one is a dump compared to every other Ive been in. I dodnt feel that it was even clean- a very OLD property which hasnt been updated except some on the exterior. Check In Desk area looks professional -but dont let it fool you. Its a welll used property.. Rooms are small, and OLD. AC was barely functional. Beds were loww to the ground for some reason. Pillows were crap. I couldnt wait to check out and get out of it.

Would not stay here again
By STEVEW, 7/9/09
When I got to my room I tried the "wake-up" button on the phone and it didnt work. I called the front desk and left a wake up call for 6:45 and 7:00 AM. I never got the wake up call!!! Now I had about 30 minutes to shower, dress, pack, and eat before I had to be at a meeting. The carpet in the hall ways needs cleaned or replaced. The elevators needed swept. The shower had mold in the grout. T.V. reception was not always great. The price and location are very good though. If not for the wake up call I would stay here again, only because of the location.

a little on the dingey side!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/3/08
this was a very convenient location for me. i liked the hot breakfast. i liked the fresh apples daily at the front desk. they were friendly and tried to be helpful. BUT.....my room smelled more than faintly of urine. the sheer curtains, parts of which were a cream color...were mostly a deep dirty gray! there was a lump of someone else's cosmetics on the counter when i checked in and i decided to see how many days it would stay there....3...so i guess my bathroom counters weren't getting much of a swipe.....you know....it was just a little on the shady side...i would give it a 1.5 stars...but certainly not a 2!....but actually...this is what i have come to expect from holiday inn.

Great for dogs, but not babies.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/9/08
We are frequent visitors to Charleston, WV and are Priority Club members for the Holiday Inn chain. Of the two Holiday Inn hotels in the city, this is by far the better one! It has been remodeled within the last five years and the eating area is nice and clean, and stocked with cold supplies (cereal, bread, juice, fruit)although it could have used some sausage, bacon, pancakes - anything warm would have been nice. They take dogs here, which is a huge bonus! They even have a nice doggie do area in the back. Additionally, we could walk to the mall from the hotel - it is only a block or two away. The only real complaint we had was that we had reserved a crib in advance and asked that it be set up in the room when we got there, as it was late at night. We even called when we were two hours out and we were told that this would not be a problem. When we got there, the crib was nowhere in sight. In fact, we were told that they keep the cribs disassembled and could not put one together for us until we actually checked in! Because it is such a nice, clean hotel, we just reserved a room with them again, and "Joy" told us that they only have one crib for the entire hotel and that it could not be reserved, but was available on a first come, first serve basis for whoever gets there first - this is not the story we got last time. To their credit, we were reimbursed $20.00 on our bill for having to wait for the crib last time. Aside from the inconsistency on this point, I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone who has a dog or who does not have an infant/toddler who needs a guaranteed place to sleep safely.
