Great stay
I'm always nervous when reading on-line reviews, which for this hotel were not great, but we plowed ahead anyway. Good thing...we were very happy. Although not everyone in our group was able to do so, our family just happened to arrive when some rooms were recently cleaned so we were able to check-in early, 1pm on a Thursday. The group had four rooms, three in the suite wing and one regular room in the high-rise. All were clean, big, comfortable, and well-appointed. Towels and bed sheets were fresh and the carpet was clean, too. We had no problem walking around barefoot. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful, when needed. The concierge, too, although we recognize that their service is predicated on fluff reviews of every restaurant around. Each day our room was cleaned quickly and completely and our personal effects were not disturbed. Personally did not eat in the restaurant, but others did and were very happy, especially with lunch. Never had a problem finding parking in the free, on-site garage. In fact, on departure day, parked on the fourth level and was easily able spread everything out to load the mini-van without being rushed or concerned about other vehicles passing by. The garage is connected to the suite wing so that made it convenient for us, too. Similar to the restaurant, we didn't use the free shuttle to the boardwalk area, but often saw it on the road going back and forth so we knew it would be available if we needed it. Being off of the boardwalk, we were hoping that the base rate would have been a bit lower than it was, even with the AAA discount we used. We could have stayed in a cheaper high-rise room, but with three kids (two teens), we paid the extra for the suite and it was worth it to us to have the extra space. There were free, supervised activities for younger kids, moon bounce, volleyball, movie night, although we didn't take advantage of any, it was good to have. While we missed the chance to be close to the boardwalk to people watch and the convenience of being where the action is, we also very much liked being away from it all also - easy to get a spot on the beach and no late-night or very early morning noise. Since we dined out each night, it wasn't a big deal to just park in the boardwalk area to enjoy BeachStreet on our way back to the hotel after eating. Our rollaway bed, not a fold-up, was a nice bonus, especially since we saw some fold-ups in the hallway. $10 well spent. OK...things to be aware of. Wi-Fi was horrendous. Brother-in-law was told it was due to a lightening strike on an antennae, but we didn't see any improvement during our stay even in the business center when we connected our laptops. The shower pressure was very weak. Both indoor and outdoor pools are tiny. Really, they're just like big puddles. Personally, I don't see any need for a pool at the beach, but others do, so I figured I'd mention it. The sleep sofa was very average which was disappointing considering the nice rollaway and very comfortable king bed. The lounge chairs that matched the sofa weren't any better. Not that we used the sofa or chairs to sit on much, but with five people showering, getting ready, and general down time, these could be upgraded. And speaking of needed upgrades, no flat panels/HD TV's that most hotels have already moved to. Again, not a big deal while on vacation. Each vacation to VaB has been different - Sandbridge house one year. Croatan house twice, and last year a boardwalk hotel - Quality Inn on 7th. I don't know what we'll plan for the future, but I would not have any qualms about staying at the Wyndham again if we decide to do a hotel again.
