I wanted to share our feedback on the Best Western Hotel for you to share with your colleagues and clients.
The location is great and the hotel was fairly clean.
When we arrived around 12 am the only room left for us was slightly larger that the double bed - not room for luggage or walking to the other side of the bed - concave in shape with a deep dip in the middle. I promptly asked for different, larger room and had to wait to the morning before getting a proper room to live in for 7 days.
The second room was fine and except for the loud plumbing, non-functioning AC, strange smell and slightly dipped bed we were ok.
The behaviour of the hotel staff was the biggest disappointment. The "concierge" was unpleasant, unhelpful and set on selling tours and packages we were not interested in. At first we thought this must be the rudeness that New York is famous for, but to test the theory we began going to the concierge in a hotel around the block for more information and found a number of staff very helpful. Examples of questions and responses for the Best Western staff include:
Where can we find the Metropolitan Hotel, we hear there is a great restaurant there? Check 411
Does the New York Stock Exchange have any tours? No
Do you have any suggestions for few notable restaurants in Greenwich Village? There are lots - just go there.
Do you have a schedule for the Staten Island Ferry? How is the view of the Statue of Liberty? We were told to call the ferry directly (they were unable to provide us with a contact number so we looked it up in a phone book) and that there was not a good view of the Statue of Liberty from the ferry. She then tried to sell us a City Circle Ferry Tour. (The view from the ferry was superb - she flat out lied to get us to purchase a tour)
We asked about the cheap tickets booth for Broadway and she told us that the line was terribly long and that we would not get good tickets for any of the shows we wanted because they were almost sold out for everyday we were available. She then handily tried to sell us the most expensive tickets for a few shows. We found the cheap tickets booth ourselves, stood inline for 30 minutes and got prime tickets for half the price (the theatre for the showing for RENT which we inquired about was only 3/4 full).
All of the responses were curt, closed and rude. As I'm sure you can appreciate help from the hotel concierge is key when you get to a new city and the Best Western certainly lacked this quality.
It is not like we were paying dirt cheap prices, for $300 per night we expected more and I wanted to share our feedback with you since you haven't had to experience the hotel personally.
