Great midtown location, small lobby
By DavidW, 7/17/08
I'll have to agree with others that the place is in serious need of an update. It has the smallest lobby area of any hotel I've ever been in. This makes the free breakfast a feeding frenzy with guests piling up trays and heading back up to their rooms because there is nowhere to sit and eat. If you leave bags there, you better not be in a hurry, because the bell guy has to take the elevator down to the basement to retrieve them. The room was fine and having a fridge was nice, but there were no machines to buy anything to put in them in. We couldn't find any convenience stores nearby, or just missed them. It was a little alarming to peek under the bed and find a bag of rat poison--I probably wasn't supposed to see that. Funny a reviewer mentioned the old lady with white hair in the lobby as we saw her as well. I can't complain about the price as the room was free as part of a Baseball All-Star Game sweepstakes prize. Proximity to Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, Fifth Avenue and other sites was a plus.

Never, ever again!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/19/07
The hotel staff were great, and the towels and bed were ok. That's about it. We were on the 16th floor (1604) and the carpet was filthy and had black stains over it; the curtains were frayed; the two chairs were dirty and very old. The sink in the bathroom was cracked in about 6 places and there was mold on the shower walls. Also, when we first went into the bathroom the window was open - we shut it as it was cold outside. After the window being closed for about 1/2 hour we smelled an awful "sewer" smell - that's why the window was open!!!! We will never, ever go back to the hotel. The price of the room was unbelieveably high; we spoke with a couple women that were staying at another Helmsley that was way nicer than ours and what they paid didn't come close to the outrageous amount we paid for the Middletowne Hotel.

Needs a bit of a make-over
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/4/07
We stayed at this hotel 17th-20th August 2007. The allocated room was large and had two kingsize beds for my husband, son and I. Bathroom had a good powerful shower and the towels were big and changed daily as well as daily bed make-up. On the downside I would have to say it definately needs a spruce up as the furniture, decor and general appearance is dull, shabby and old. We were on the 10th floor with a rear view onto office blocks but with a superb view of the gleaming chrysler building. Even though it definately needs updating it was clean. Who was that 'white haired elderly lady that sat in the leather chair everyday and opened the door for us' is she a live in resident or what ? First visit to NYC so nothing to compare it to, would try somewhere else for any further visits.

Good location, poor service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/16/07
We were booked into a suite with two queen beds. Upon arrival, they put us in a suite with one king bed. It took two days, and dealing with 7 unhelpful front desk employees and managers to remedy their mistake. We had to pay additional money to get a rollout bed, despite this being the hotel's mistake. The bellman and housekeeping staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel had one ice machine on the 8th floor, and no soda or vending machines. Breakfast ended promptly at 8:55 am (if not sooner). The rooms were clean, but very outdated. One of the tables fell to pieces when we moved it to make room for the rollout bed. It was nice having a mini fridge in the room, but a microwave would have been great. In the second room we got, the tub drained very slowly when you showered.

Never Again
By Pamela, 9/18/06
This hotel was the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. We had a one bedroom suite which was large, but no where near clean. The rooms were old, dingy and the carpet was filthy with stains. The beds and pillows were extremely uncomfortable. I left with a bruise on my hip from the springs that were poking thru the mattress. We stayed for a painful 6 nights. The President was in town and it was the weekend of 9/11 so there were no other rooms available, or we would have moved the first night.

Very Nice Place
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/7/05
We found the hotel clean, quiet and comfortable. It is old; however, the price was right, and the staff was super. Continental breakfast was good-- plenty of very large bagels and pastries.

We may or may not come back.
By Equanimity, 6/3/05
We were relocated from the RAdisson Hotel, because they did not keep my reseveration. So, my wife and I aaccidently lived in Helmsley Middletowne Hotel for just one night. The Hotel is old, but at leaset it is clean. The clerk at the desk was friendly. The location is great. It's about three blocks from the Subway. If we want to save some budget, we may come back.

Will use if o other option
By sandhyas, 5/23/05
Staff were very nice but could not help us. We booked & paid for a quad room but when we got to the hotel we were informed that the Helmsley does not do quad rooms !! The rooms were small & they offered to put in a rollaway bed in there for the teenagers which would have made the rooms even more congested. Not a very comfortable stay for my guests who had travelled all the way from Australia.

I'd never trust them again.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/1/05
We arrived at the Helsmley Middletowne on the reserved date and were told that we were a no-show for the previous day and they had already charge our credit card. There were no available rooms for us and we were quite stuck. We had not made a mistake on the date. I checked our confirmation with their main reservation office and our date was correct. Later they offered us an up-grade for our next visit as an apology. They are removing the pending credit card charges but it certainly doesn't make up for the hastle of finding another room at twice the price, plus another cab ride and cab fare.
