Just awful
In July 2007, my family and I planned a long weekend up to the Storyland area. We were looking for a nice country inn that had a suite style room to stay at with our two young children. We picked the Whitney Inn. When we had to pre pay 100% we should have know something was up.
We arrived, checked in at the main house. The “suites” were not in the main house; rather they were in a building set in the middle of a large gravel parking lot. When we got to our room we found a “suite” furnished with what can only be described as old college dorm room furniture. The couch and chairs were far from comfortable which I could have gotten past. The mystery stains across the couch and floor were too much for me to handle with two small children. We spent one night in “suite” and asked to be moved.
Night two was spent in the main house in two adjoining rooms. To be fair, this was a large improvement from the first night. The furnishings had a quaint country feel and the rooms were clean.
The pool was fine although the website said it was heated. When we asked the front desk, the girl staffing the desk she said that it was not heated. Upon going into the pool, it was definitely not heated. Granted in late July it is not crucial, but their website misstated this fact.
And finally, the food. Breakfast was included with our stay. The first meal was fine, nothing special, but it was alright. The second morning my family and I ordered our breakfast. When I received mine, I went to take a piece of bacon. As soon as I touched it and nice SPIDER came crawling out of the bacon. We got a brief apology from the waitress.
We left one night early. I told the girl at the front desk why we were leaving early. Indifference is to kind to describe her reaction. I told her that my reviews online would not be favorable and turned to leave. With one foot out the door, the manager of the hotel blurted out have a nice day or something to that effect with a heavy sarcastic tone as he ran upstairs. I turned around told him about the spiders, the stained furniture and carpet, etc. We ended up having a 15 minute conversation were he ended up apologizing and promised to send out a gift certificate to the properties that the owners manage. Not that I wanted it, but I am still waiting to receive it.
To sum up. DO NOT STAY HERE. There are a great number of hotels, Inns, etc in the area. This place can easily ruin a vacation. It truly is that bad.
A small final note on the food, on the menu they mention that they only use 100% maple syrup. A family came in the dinning while we were eating. Their son had food allergies so they asked the waitress to confirm the maple syrup was in fact 100% pure maple syrup and not the artificially flavor type syrup. The waitress kindly brought out the bottle. It was an “Aunt Jemima” type syrup. I personally do not care what syrup I use but do not say you serve one type on your menu and in fact use some totally different and far cheaper. Another misrepresentation.
