Bait and Switch

Granlibakken staff are incredibly unprofessional, even reserving a room was a major task. When I finally did reserve a room, the manager offered a studio at the conference rate because the front staffs issues. When I arrived, I got the “cheapest” (their words), not what I reserved, for $60 a night more. They refused to lower the price insisting that was the advertised rate, even though I told them it was not what I had agreed to at the time of reservations, and the advertised rate on the computer in fact was $186, not the 240+ they were charging. When I went up to ask for a second room key they asked what room, and said “oh yeah, I know you” in a nasty tone. The room was connected to three other units, mine was upstairs. It was summer, and 90 degrees, there is no A/C, and the ceiling fan made loud ticking noises. The curtains were cheap, they did not block out light and did not close all the way. I was feet away from the road and had to deal with bright street lights all night. Also, do not expect privacy, the door had a 2 inch gap under it, and as I could hear my neighbor urinate, nothing I did was private either. Also there was a bright yellow light in the hallway that came right in under that huge gap also making it hard to sleep. Not that I cared, but the TV was from the 70’s and they did not have cable, and the other hotels did. There were also no dresser drawers. The beds were comfortable, but they were twin sized.

Location but nothing else
By ,
I am a very seasoned traveler and am not prone to writing bad reviews. However, in this case, I must. This resort has one thing going for it; location. It is away from the hussle of the Tahoe area, and so is good for families. My wife and two children (ages 2 and 7) came here for four days. We were very excited because of all the snow the area had at the time. It has as it's main attraction it's own sleding and skiing hill. However, while nice, it's open to the public, expensive, and uncontrolled chaos. It is simply an accident waiting to happen. They have what a young woman who I can only assume is there to control the madness, but she is no where up to the task. She can do no more than hope to see whether everyone has their sticker. So, given that we were in the woods, we went out behind our suite area and made our own sled run. We did a great job, thanks to a shovel and some planning. Our kids had great fun. Then, on the last day (it was 45 degrees and things were melting fast), I was putting snow in a low area at least 15 feet from the sidewalk when a worker walked up and scolded me for getting snow on the sidewalk! Mind you, I didn't, and second, everything was melting! Now, at $450 a night, at a place advertised for families, you'd think rather than scolding me, he would have offered to help! Keep in mind, I did not want my kids anywhere near that accident prone sled area, which by the way was way on the other side of the resort. Then, there's the resturant, or lack of it. The food was horrible. My son ordered a hamburger and it was raw. The breakfast was tolerable, buffet-style, but the coffee undrinkable. Then, there was the keys that did not work. Mind you, the main lodge was quite a hike from where they had us placed. So, when we came back after a day of snowmobiling, cold and hungry, and our keys did not work, I was not happy to have to walk all the way back to the main lodge to fix the problem. There was no way to call for someone to come help us. When I arrived at the desk, the girl wanted to play "20 questions" about things, rather than simply looking at my ID, which she never did, and I never answered her questions (I couldn't). I could have been any frustrated father telling her my kids were crying outside my room, waiting for me to get back. The bottom line to all of this review is that the resort is in a great location. The rooms are old, with very out of date amenities. I could live with all of that. However, the service was horrible, and they make no apologies for it. I guess it helps to be one of the oldest around.

Won't be going back
By ,
We just got back from a weekend for a wedding & we were dissapointed to say the least. The location of resort is convienent to Tahoe City & a beach. There is NO restaurant/bar anywhere on site. Which makes it a hassle to always have to drive & eat. We stayed in the 7 bdrm townhouse suite. The carpets were filthy, you never wanted to walk on them- bring slippers or wear flip flops. Our blinds were old, cracked & there was only one trash can in the entire room. The bathrooms need updating-poor lighting & the outside landscaping needs some major TLC as well. I know what the bride paid for the townhouse plus their studio-they got ripped off. If you are planning a wedding there, do expect your wedding to end early. At 9:00 no more music outside and you had to go in the den off the patio and keep noise very low. I give this place C-

The best ever
By ,
I loved the service it was great . They were polite and has an awesome breakfast . They have a shuttle service to the mountain . This place is a very convinient lodge . The beds are very comfy .The rooms are heated . They have a heated pool . There is a jacuzzi too . The cabins are cozy and have fireplaces . Rooms also have kitchens and showers . The Granlibakken is my favorite place to stay in Squaw Valley U.S.A. .

Great Hotel
By ,
I enjoyed my stay at Granlibakken. Hidden behind but close to the resort is some ropes course activities for team building. The pool is small. Excellent quality in everything. A little pricey. Great for groups. No internet connection.

Quiet Retreat
By ,
Granlibakken is a nice little retreat tucked away in Tahoe. For the price you pay, you get an okay value. The resort is a little older and is composed of a bunch of resort rooms and condos. The only downside is they don't have a regular restaurant on premise, rather a kitchen that serves a complimentary buffet breakfeast. They do offer food service for conference guests. The upside to not having a true restaurant on the resort premises is you can sample many of the other great restaurants in the area.

The Perfect Get-Away
By ,
This is a beautiful place in a beautiful setting. Accommodations range from a room to studios w/ fireplace & full kitchen to family-size condo. The breakfast is phenomenal, the service is first rate. Great for families with children: small ski slope, sledding hill on premises. Ski & snowshoe rentals available. Large outdoor hot tub & heated pool. Beautiful wooded setting.
