University Inn Academic Suites, Orono

This motel was absolutely terrible! When we arrived, we were informed that because it was a busy weekend and all hotel room in the area were booked, they would be increasing the price---unbelievable. No they would not give Triple A discounts this weekend, but the usually do. The room was austere and something out of the 60's. The ceiling tiles were stained from water damage, and the rooms smelled of mold and chemical cleaning solutions. The pool was filled with green algae, and so gross it was better to swim in the stream beside the motel instead of the disqusting pool. The staff was unfriendly and acted like you were doing them a favor by staying there. The website of the place, says that they have a bar and rec room. We were infoormed the bar was closed a year ago---nice. The pool table had a hole in it so the balls dropped out when you played. The orange juice holder, dripped orange juice constantly, ech. The air conditioner did not work. Their website says they have microwaves, refrigerators, etc. in the rooms---nope, none were there. At the end of the day, they were too cheap to give you a newspaper that was a day old. An absolutely awful experience for 127.00 a night---oh also, the rates on their website are totally inaccurate. DO NOT STAY AT THIS HORRIBLE PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The University Inn if obviously an older hotel, but it is spotless. The new teal carpet and lovely turquoise sink, tub, and toilet added a certain charm to the room. My five year old declared it the fanciest hotel she's ever stayed in because we were given a real key instead of a keycard. Our room was a great size for a family of four. We had a mini-suite, which included a fridge, microwave, and vcr. The breakfast was the best we had on our two week, cross-country trip; everything was fresh. We really lucked out with our view. We were on the second floor at the farthest end from the lobby. From the sliding glass doors (or the balcony if you are brave enough to face the Maine winter weather), we had a gorgeous view of a snow covered field, the river, and downtown Orono. The pictures we took from there are unbelievable. The rooms on the other side of the hall have a view of the parking lot, so it's probably a good idea to request a certain side. We had a great stay!

I have been staying in the University Inn in Orono, Maine from time to time over the last twenty years. Recently it has come under new management, and the changes have been lovely. It feels like a combination of hotel and home, the details and decorations make it feel hospitable and comfortable. The big stuffed bear in the lobby gives it an element of Maine charm. I suggest the side facing the Stillwater River. The view is gorgeous in Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring! I live in hotels 8 months out of the year and I must say this is one of my favorites!
