Maine Inn-centive a great value
By Shelly Harper, 5/24/09
The Inn is offerring a package that includes dinner and breakfast, We saw the ad in the Boston Globe. Reservations were very nice and informative. We received a room upgrade as it was mid-week and they had rooms open. We stayed in Seabreeze 1. 2 levels and very nicely done. Jacuzzi, fireplace, walk-in shower. Fantastic view and private porch which we camped on most of the time. Staff are very attentive. Always looking you in the eye and very interested in your happiness. We ate in Bogies and met the owners family including their 15 year old daughter who waited on us. The entertainment each night was a local artist Noel Arrington. He gave us the inside scoop on the history of the Inn and all the project the owners have done. They just added new 80's vintage games in the Lighthouse rec room and added more service rooms in the spa. The highlight was the hammocks on the water. We practically lived in them. Food and service is very good and we met the mascot "Bogie" the Inn's border terrier that frequents the lobby. We heard the restaurant was named after him. He was a very cool dog. It was early in the season and quiet in the mid-week. The package is a really good value but is only available if occupancy is down. A really good experience all the way around. Try the steaks. All prime cornfed beef. A real treat.

A true Maine vacation!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/1/07
We were really taken with the Spruce Point Inn. We stayed in the Balsam Lodge in a Garden View Deluxe room. The room is huge with a very warm feel. White washed knotty pine in a new hotel room really made us feel like the hotel went beyond the call to make the whole place very authentic to it's roots as a traditional Maine resort. We had coffee on our porch early each morning. We found it was wonderful to get up early and watch the lobster boats at work. One of the days we rode the Inn's bikes (new Treks but with a vintage look and feel) down to town and sat on the dock at Lobsterman's Coop and watched the town come to life. We had a chance to talk to really nice folks who were lobster fisherman. The Inn's restaurant is very good for both breakfast and dinner. We ate nearly every meal there and the staff always remembered our names. Whenever we went into the hotel, there was always someone (from front desk staff, to a passing housekeeper, to the Inn owner) asking if we needed coffee or something to read. We always felt at home at Spruce Point. It is a resort and there are a lot of fine amenities including a Spa. Its probably the location and the overall feel of the Inn and its staff that really set this place apart. We highly recommend using the bikes and at least one visit to the Spa.

Fantastic Maine Experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/25/07
We travelled to Spruce Point Inn this past August. We were truly delighted with our stay from check-in to check-out. Our children were with us and our border terrier Charlotte. While the town is beautiful (although lacking in parking and quality shopping), we found ourselved not wanting to leave SPI. They serve 3 meals a day along with wine and cheese each afternoon on the outdoor deck. We particularly used the kayaks, bikes, and fishing equipment along with the pools. On 2 nights, we enrolled the kids in the "kids night out" program which allowed us to come to dinner just the 2 of us. It was just so nice to spend quality time together as a family without the hustle and bustle of theme parks, etc. We played cards, went to the lobster bake and boat cruise, and just enjoyed exploring this beautiful property. We stayed in the Starboard Lodge. We would highly recommed it. What a view and the location is right accross from the oceanfront pool. Staff were friendly in all departments and seemed well trained. We spoke with the Inn's owners on several occasions. It is a family run operation and just has an excellent feel to it. All the maine experiences you could want in an understated luxury atmosphere. We ate many nights in Bogie's hidaway. It is particularly good for the kids. The Inn has entertainment every night in the summer. We really can't say enough. We would like to live in Boothbay Harbor some day. The place is beautiful and the people are very friendly.

Worst Experience Ever
By Jennifer, 8/17/07
Everything about my weekend at the Spruce Point Inn was disappointing. The staff was rude, I was overcharged, the room was not clean, the "amenities" were non-existent. I would not recommend the SPI for anyone. There are better places to stay closer to town.

Expensive in July
By Darlene, 7/5/07
We stayed in Bluebird #3 built three years ago. It still smelled new inside. Ours was a "Gardenview Deluxe room". Supposedly we didn't have an ocean view, but from the porch on unit 3, you can see the Burnt Island Lighthouse, a little bit of ocean, and catch plenty of salt air breezes. Including taxes and 18% gratuities, it was $275/night. The king mattress was new, with a thick layer of cushioning. I think people like it that way, but I didn't. The room was huge and had a kitchenette. I didn't do any cooking though. We were celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary, so we decided to splurge by eating in their dining rooms. We had breakfast at Bogie's, their casual "bistro". My Belgian waffle tasted like it was made with stale flour. Other than that, it had no flavor at all. It was $6.50 I think my husband's sausages were undercooked. On our Anniversary, we ate in their "Fine Dining" room- 88 Grandview. They said they were all booked up for 7 PM, so we rushed to get out of the pool and get there for our 6:30 PM reservation. There were only 6 tables used the entire hour we were there (at least a dozen unused). The staff was new and inexperienced. We started out with Escargot. I expected it in the little shells in garlic butter. It came baked, covered in a crust that was flaky but tasteless, and the escargot and mushrooms inside had barely any flavor. The gentleman delivering the rolls barely spoke audibly, and the rolls were cold. Tough to melt the beautiful cold butter flowers. They very sweetly brought us each a glass of white wine (served in a champagne glass) in honor of our anniversary. (Or it was flat champagne.) We both ordered the Angus sirloin. I ordered mine between Rare and Medium Rare- dark pink, but not purple. It was almost entirely brown except one area that had a slight blush of pink left on one side. My husband ordered his steak medium and it was medium rare. He gave me some of his undercooked, and I gave him some of my overcooked steak. The baked potato was a dry as any I have ever had. The tri-colored carrots and yellow beets were good. $75 for two. They gave me a free dessert to make up for the overcooked steak. It sure was beautiful, but it didn't taste like anything. This was a recurring theme. They have cooks who present the food beautifully, but who don't actually cook good tasting food. My favorite thing was the heated pool. That water must have been at least 100 degrees! No joke! I am not exaggerating! At one point it was warmer than the hot tub! It felt very warm to the toes! I feel sure it's a mistake that will be corrected, but it sure was nice when I was there on July 2nd & 3rd, since it was only 70 degrees outside! They had a computer anyone could use, with fast internet access. All the people we dealt with were friendly and nice. If you stay there, don't eat there.

Disappointing
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/24/06
We expected the Spruce Point Inn to be fashionable, elegant and sophisticated. It was neither. Our room was nice enough and comfortable although the advertised "Garden View" consisted of three dead trees and the backwall of another house. The room was missing a full length mirror. It had a fully equipped kitchinette which we did not use. Our reception was cool, unfriendly; it reminded me of my army sergeant assigning me to my barrack...The lady did not crack a smile nor did we enounter anyone from management during our week's stay- it would have been nice to see some friendly staff. We paid $350.00 a night incl taxes- but breakfast was not included, they offer coffee etc in a depressing room; we avoided the high priced dining room and the high priced spa as well as the unattractive medium priced restaurant. The advertised "swimming pools" turned out to be wading pools - too shallow and too small for swimming; the upper one was filled with kids leaving no room for adults. We ate most meals down the road at "Brown's Wharf" a fabulous restaurant- first class; great lobsters etc. The town is touristy and full of shops, our whaling excursion was fun; we did see one whale (barely)... Spruce Point Inn may be lovely for a wedding on a sunny day but for visitors who have come a long way - the place lacks amenities such as a card room for rainy days. Later we found a place in New Hampshire for half the price which included a truly fabulous breakfast.

Superior
By M, 2/4/06
Beautiful surroundings. Beautiful pools. Lovely restaurants. Expensive rooms. Seclusion from any street sounds. Isolated but with water access to the harbor. They do not answer emails. Service is so-so but congenial. They have kayaks and bikes. 10 minute drive to town. Better than most accomodations in the area.

Overrated/Over priced
By Glenn, 8/20/05
A beautiful location can’t hide some basic problems with the Spruce Point Inn. My wife and I recently shared a 3-night minimum, a $600 plus/night (including “hotel fees”) ocean-view efficiency cottage with our two adult children. The view was beautiful, but we felt that it should be at this rate. The cottage was clean and charming, but the floors were listing more than the sailboats in the harbor, and the king-sized mattress had to be a leftover from the Inn’s early days. To make matters worse, pipes that run under the cottage must supply water to adjacent buildings as they were noisy all night long. After a sleepless night and aching backs we determined that a simple mattress swap was in order. However, we were told that this was not possible by the staff at the front desk. After working our way through several levels of management, we were provided upgraded accommodations in upgraded rooms at the same rate as the cottage - one with a brand-new king-sized mattress. So much for a relaxing start to our short vacation. Our advice…stay away from the cottages. But beware, these two rooms would have cost us over $800/night! Your hotel fee does offer free kayak rentals. But again, beware, the 4 kayaks are available on a first-come first-served basis. Since the process is managed at the spa, which is located nowhere near the waterfront, one must keep out a close eye for the next available kayak, then report to the spa to sign-out the equipment. After three attempts we did secure two kayaks and had a great time. But, there must be a better way. Our dinner at the Bistro was excellent and the service was great so we left a generous tip. At check-out time we learned that our hotel fees cover dining room gratuities. Who new? Overall Spruce Point is a beautiful place and the staff is friendly and helpful, but one should not have to go through what we did to enjoy its pricey amenities. I would rate Sebasco Harbor Resort a much better value.

Best Resort in Maine
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/31/05
We stayed in the resorts new Lark Lodge. Cathedral ceilings, fireplace, marble bathrooms, soaking tub and walkin shower, sitting area, private porch and above all a fantastic view. The salt water pool is sweet. Private and plush. We watched lobstermen pick their catch as sailboats eased by in the background. Dining is fantastic in either restaurant. Private transportation, free. Kayaks, Bikes, and fitness center - free. Wireless broadband. Free. This hotel does it right. No nickle and diming. We went for a 2 night getaway for our anniversary and were really treated like we were someone special even though it was our first visit. It was like we had known the staff for years. Highly recommend this resort. We did not make it to the Spa but will the next time.

Comfort and Luxury
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/9/04
The Spruce Point Inn is replete with gracious charm. Located out of town on its own penninsula the inn consists of a main building and numerous, more recently constructed separate lodgings. We have never stayed in the main building so I can't vouch for the rooms there. The rooms in the Evergreen building where we have always been lodged are spacious and well-appointed. Bathrooms are enormous. The property itself is magnificent and the view of Boothbay Harbor unparalleled. Don't miss the breakfasts. Ours were included in the price of the room, amd what a feast! We have stayed there twice and are returning again this year.
