What? No towels?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/18/10
My wife and I stayed at the Ambassador East for our anniversary. We booked our room through Priceline. We were pretty disappointed. The room was very small. I can live with that. There was a large stain in the carpet right in front of the door. The TV was a very old 25" console-again I can live with that as well, but it was just noticable. The biggest problem we had at the Ambassador is that they didn't want to supply us with towels! I have never heard of this before. The day of check in and for the next three days we had to call downstairs and ask for them. They would usually tell us that the delivery truck was running late or something. It was alittle bit of a drag. Especially when we would walk around Chitown most of the afternoon and get sweaty because it was very hot in August. Then we would get to our room and have to wait a couple hours for fresh towels so we could shower! Troy

A great famous place
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/13/10
With the fabulous Pump Room and on the Gold Coast, I loved it both times I visited Chicago. The concierges were very helpful. Within walking distance to everything. Got a fabulous deal Aug. 2009. If you love show business history, this is the place for you!

Pricey for what you get.
By Ed Hands, 7/23/09
Perhaps I am just "cheap", but really this place was nothing special. The room was clean, but certainly not without flaws. There was rust around the caulk in the shower and some dirt spots on the rug. Overall the room was fairly small and the decor wasn't all that appealing. Kind of dated, actually. Finally, the television was pretty tiny. The bed, however, was insanely comfortable. I would have like to have taken it home with me. The service was good, for what little I used of it. Be prepared, if you bring a car, for a pretty hefty parking fee they didn't mention here. Overall the hotel was fine, but I feel I would have been just as happy, and gotten more amenities and more for my dollar, at a "lesser" hotel. In general, it seemed like a huge waste of money. (I mean, please, no free wireless at these prices? Come on already....)

Worth the bus ride
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/29/08
Took my grandkids for a week, the hotel was more than I could have hoped for. The service was wonderful. Room was so big when compared to other hotels. I would have liked to have a pop machine on the floor for late nites and picky children who did not like what was in mini fridge. Room service for one pop would have been too expensive.

Excellent stay in Chicago
By Scott Mallonee, 2/20/08
I travel a lot, and often stay in Hyatts, Sofitels, and others along the same line. Though many of the reviews many not convey my thoughts, the service here at the Ambassador East is phenomenal, as is the room. A comfortable bed, clean bathroom with marble and Gilchrist and Soames toiletries, a HUGE bedroom, coffee maker (which is usually non-existent in 4-star hotels -- they usually want you to pay $7 for a cup of coffee delivered by room service), a very well-stocked and moderately priced mini-bar ($6/mini-bottle), a huge selection of refreshments in your room to choose from (cashews, gummi bears, altoids, pistachios, pringles, jelly beans, chips, a number of packaged candies, and more -- all for a modest price for a hotel)...I don't know what more to ask for. No chain 4-star hotel gives this (at least not without spending a bit). I have found my stay here so far (I'm actually still here while writing this) very pleasant, and better than expected. I read the reviews after booking and was a bit skepitcal, but the bad reviews are obviously the result of an uncommon, unfortunate situation. The walls here are thin, but unless you go to bed before 10, then you'd never realize it. It's a nice quiet hotel. Perfect for the business traveller and close to so much. The Clark/Division subway stop is only a few blocks away. You are in a short walk from the Magnificent Mile and only a couple blocks away from one of the best areas to bar-hop in Chicago, as well as close to 24-hour drug and convenience stores. Next time I come to Chicago, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to stay at the Ambassador East again.

Nostalgic with a phenomenal location!
By Heather, 11/12/07
As a seasoned Chicago traveler this hotel has been bumped to my favorite in the area. If you are accustomed to staying in brand spanking new hotels with little personality steer clear. But if you are looking for history and an eclectic atmosphere you will love it. I was nervous about our choice after reading some of the reviews. But realize the travelers writing such reviews must like larger, newer properties. The staff can not be beat at this hotel. Friendly, attentive and personable. The rooms & bathrooms are not enormous, but cozy & comfortable. The beds are lush with a snuggly comforter not of your standard hotel. Perfect location amongst the brownstones a few short blocks from Michigan Ave, the Rush street restaurants & taverns as well as Division. Dining at the famous Pump Room is a must! There is a reason all the “greats” have dinned here. Highly recommend!

worst hotel i ever stayed in
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/12/07
With the exception of the staff and location which are both great this hotel is absolutely terrible. I've seen better doss houses. Unless you're deaf and blind don't come here. The worst thing is the noise from other rooms. It's like the people are in your room 2 inches away from you. I hate it.

Very pleased!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/3/07
My wife and I were very impressed with this hotel. The staff was attentive and the maids were like ninjas. We never even saw them! We'd leave for an hour or so and return to a fresh room! Very quiet, stately neighborhood. No issues other than parking, but there aren't too many ways around that. Our car was always brought around very quickly, however. The valet service was not as zealous at getting our bags from the car, etc. as we experienced at The Drake, but that was very minor in my book of hotel issues. Excellent value for Gold Coast. We will definitely be staying here again.

Neat taste of chicago
By JamesR, 8/31/07
My family loved this hotel. Its a quick walk to North Ave beach, which in July is great! You are close to Lincoln park, the lake, michigan ave and Rush St. I think it was great for families because there is a great little playground just down the street, the staff at the hotel treated the kids like their own. We had paid for a basic room and I'm not sure if they put us in a suite or we had a corner room, something, but we had like a two room suite that was incredible. Loved Chicago!

We highly recommend
By KATHERINE K, 8/16/07
This hotel was charming and the location was supreme! The staff were very friendly and helpful. We are very choosy about where we stay and will definitely return to this hotel when visiting Chicago again.
