A great hotel and a perfect location
By ,
This hotel is in a very quiet location, but close to everything you could ever want to do in Honolulu. The beach was wonderful...not too crowded and very clean and very close to the hotel. At night, it was so quiet, we left our sliding glass door open so we could hear the ocean. Great price, great service! We will be going back!

Very disappointed
By ,
Where do I begin? I had waited many years to come to Hawaii and the only down fall that I had was with the New Otani. My husband and I were there for our honeymoon and for the price we paid for the room the only good thing about it, waking up to the ocean waves! I knew what to expect with valet and had no problem paying for a few nights. Parking on the street was just as good and FREE! I could not believe that they would charge for internet service per night. Most importantly, our room. It was a filthy mess! As soon as we walked in you could see dirty spots on the tile floor, all the mirrors were smeared, the tracking on the sliding glass doors off the living room area did not work properly, there were water spots all over the chrome in the sink, hair all over the bathroom floor, toilet was dirty, soap scum on the shower walls, marks all over the walls. Not to mention they left the sliding glass doors open to our room. There was so much more wrong with our room I could be on here forever typing. They even took the newspapers out of our room that we had not even read but were planning on taking them home. Oh, did I mention that with the tub there was a hand held shower head that was rusted? How gross. I wrote everything down on paper and handed it to the front desk. Being in the hotel business I would have offered a free night's stay because the room was filthy and they had nowhere else to put us. Did I mention that I clean and inspect rooms for a living? I think the only way that I would stay there again is if I inspect the room before staying. The manager was suppose to read my list but did he/she?

Beyond our expectations!
By ,
The location is why we picked the hotel in the first place. Being Oahu residents from the North Shore, we decided to stay in Waikiki at a quiet hotel away from the noise with a clean swimming beach. The beach (San Souci) was gorgeous. Our requirements led us here for the Don Ho memorial services. The room service was unbelievably quick (less than 10 minutes) for breakfast. The staff at the front desk and the Hau Tree Lanai restaurant were very attentive and super friendly. I recommend the Spinach Eggs Benedit and the Poi Belgian waffles with fresh strawberries. Great strong coffee with endless servings and the view of the ocean cannot be surpassed. Reservations are highly recommended as the restaurant tends to fill up quickly, especially on Sunday mornings. The room itself (we chose the Ocean Front Deluxe Suite) was clean and small, but I liked the fact that you could separate the living room area from the bedroom (specify twin or queen beds). My daughter's 2 friends wanted to spend the night, so we decided to give them their own room for the night, and were assigned to Room #304. Although the room was in the older wing (walk-up), it was extremely spacious! I love the security feature of having to use your hotel room key to open the front door that leads you to each floor before reaching your room. The room contained a 4-piece dining set, a microwave oven, dishes (plates, cups and utensils) and a coffee maker. The bedroom was an entirely separate room that included another television set and spacious closets. For closet space fanatics, you get 4 spacious ones to use. There were 2 sofa beds in the living room. You could fit 5 people comfortably. For guests who complained about the smaller rooms, go for the older wing facing the Waikiki aquariam. Spacious balcony complete with outdoor chairs and a table. This is a great value for families of 4. Be sure to check out the small pastry shop for coffee and goodies freshly baked at the restaurant - cookies, muffins, spam musubi and cheesecake or brownies. Yum! After these sinful treats, walk the 1/2 mile walk to the crowded part of Waikiki for meals or shopping. As for the parking, use the street parking as we did and save yourself the $12 valet fee. We used our $12 for a 6 pack of beer to stash in our hotel mini refrigerator so we could watch the sunset from our balcony. Lastly, bring comfortable walking shoes. For my daily walk, I walked the boardwalk to the Sheraton Moana Hotel and ran on the beach for my return trip. Wear a swimsuit underneath and swim as there are many showers along the way. We loved the experience we had here and plan to return soon to bring our entire families. Mahalo to the staff who made sure our stay was a pleasant one!!

HAWAII ! NEVER AGAIN !
By ,
About us: we have been to many countries: CUBA, MEXICO, GREECE, NETHERLANDS, ETC.. For our honeymoon, we decided to travel 4700 miles to Hawaii. Our first week at Maui was great. But it didn't last. We spent the second week in Honalulu at the "The New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel." Let me tell you, I am a pretty patient person that understands mistakes. I didn't care much for the Expired gift basket we received or the constant "sorry no more beach towels" at the front desk. But when we received a message that the valet dented our rental car, we expected them (valet service and hotel) to take care of the situation. Instead, I had to hunt down the Valet and Valet company and continuously tell them I want this taken care of. And for the Management of the hotel, Well they couldn't be bothered with this. It was "MY PROBLEM" So I spend 4 days trying to fix MY PROBLEM calling Thrifty, the valet company and asking the front desk why they won't help us? To add to this, I had to pay the hotel for the calls made to THRIFTY AND THE VALET SERVICE and the parking fee (116$). THAT WAS JULY, IT TOOK NUMEROUS LONG DISTANCE CALLS TO HAWAII TO FINALLY GET REIMBURSED NOVEMBERFOR THE DAMAGE (650$)TO MY VEHICLE IN NOVEMBER!! MONTHS LATER !!! and the HOTEL, after many many long distance calls and emails, still won't bother saying the word "SORRY" In fact they won't call me!!!! No more America vacations for me, we will visit CUBA next vacation. We have been there already and the COMMUNISTS know how to treat travellers well !!! What a bad Hotel !

Loved The New Otani
By ,
We can't get over anyone who complains about the location of this hotel - it is what makes it the best hotel around. The rooms are small, but who spends time in their room on a trip to Hawaii? And you do have to walk back in the front of the hotel from the beach, you can leave by the side door. The side door doesn't allow access to keep all beach goers from using the hotel bathrooms...pretty understandable as the beach is public and there are no bathrooms. If you want wonderfull walks to and from Waikiki and to stay on the nicest beach around, this is the hotel for you!

Great snorkeling on quiet beach
By ,
We give it a 4 plus!!!! The hotel is out of the noise of Waikiki, unless you want it and walk only one mile! We were very happy to get up every morning, go down the fast elevators, walk about 60 feet and start swimming. The reef right outside our door was better than the very busy bay on the south-east area of Oahu. One day I counted at least 20 different kinds of fish!! We brought our own snorkel equipment, but a locally purchased set is not a bad price. Employees Chris, Angela and Roger were great. The only fault I could see was that the sliding door for the lanai needed Arnold Schwartzenegger to open it! Also, the airconditioners of the other hotels were loud, but that didn't deter us. We would return to this very clean Hotel.

a true island getaway!
By ,
we just got back today from this marvelous hotel..and any review i've read about it made me think, that i wasnt going to be 100% satisfied. They were all wrong. True..it certainly is off the beaten path..across from Queen Kapiolani park and buffered by the Wakiki Aquarium and the huge beach..and it certainly is a long walk into town. But honestly, who wants to be in the middle of Honolulu? Parking is a huge problem downtown...and people are out all nite long..noisy.There are shuttles, and buses and taxis available.Plus delivery ! The room,to me was great..we had a king sized bed,a vanity area,a sitting area..and it wasnt HUGE,but how much time do you spend in your room?Every morning id see the sun come up over Diamond Head and every nite id see the twinkling lights of Honolulu. I agree,it is a pain to go out the side door to go to the beach out front..but the beach was clean and there was a snack bar as well as a convenience store right there. We never ate at the resteraunt..just at the bar the 1st nite we were there..the food was extremely expensive...and fancy schmancy. We didnt like the $12 a day either for valet BUT the street was clear in front of the hotel..and we could have parked there..we just liked the security of the lot. The rooms are either twin beds or king..specify when you reserve them! Supposedly all are smoking..but being a non smoker..i am extremely sensitive to smoke and i smelt nothing.Clean,clean,clean..a very pretty interior..music playing every nite..helpful desk crew..great valets..honest people(one valet scraped our hub cap when he moved it out..and told us..they took responsibility..and they didnt have to..we could have got stuck with the bill). So,the location is great if you want to enjoy the park(saw many walkers and joggers)The beach is a hubbub of activity on the weekends..free movies on a bug csreen and a band was playing and they had local vendors selling food..it was terrific. I would say to rent a car if you want to explore the whole island..otherwise..the trollleys and buses and tours will take you around.I would highly recommend this hotel for honeymooners..the ambience of the resteraunt at nite with the tiki torches lit was gorgeous..you cant go wrong for the money and you wont be dissapointed..we would go back tomorrow!
