The lounge area was great! You could sit and watch the sun set, turtles, eels and fish. The hotel is next to a nice beach.

Love the Big Island
By ,
The hotel restaraunt, bar and location are nice. Rooms were nice but the hallways were dirty. I would stay there again and the price was reasonable given everything that was available. Staff were all very friendly in bar and restaraunt. That in itself makes the stay more worth while..

Snorkeling paradise
By ,
We just returned from 8 days at this resort and had a fantastic time. It was our first visit to the Big Island and we couldn't have picked a better place to suit our avid love for snorkeling. The bay was easily accessible and good quality snorkeling for all ages. This is not a resort with lots of nightlife and feel it best caters to families or adults not looking for that type of environment. We had purchased oceanfront and were very pleased to be upgraded to oceanfront suite which afforded us the best view in the house! Looking around, any room on the oceanfront or the north facing rooms for view looked very good. Don't miss out on a night time dive/snorkel with the manta rays...it is an experience you will NEVER forget!

Great Place for the Honeymoon!
By ,
We spent our honeymoon in June of 2003 in this great resort. It was the best time we had, filled with lots of different attractions, trips and sunshine. Room was very clean, and the staff was very nice and helpful. Next day we booked almost most of our attractions in the lobby so we were set for the most part of the week. This is not a real big resort so in that way it's nice because you can really relax and enjoy all accomodations. The beach is far from being nice I have to admit that. It's not one of those white sandy beaches but actually quite dirty and rocky, yes that's right. But it is all explained by the volcano remains that you can see if you take a walk down the shore. I really recommend renting a car and driving through the other half of the island like we did for one day, we went to Hilo and got on to the helicopter to watch the beautiful waterfalls on the other side of the island. The island itself is breathtaking, this kind of beauty is really exotic and could not be compared with anything else. At night you can sit and enjoy the view of the ocean right at the restaurant or the bar, also watch one of those big turtles in the water since one side of the hotel is practically standing in the water and facing the ocean. There's tennis courts, beautiful tropical garden in front of the resort, you can also take a walk right on the remains of the lava down the shore. Also make sure you attend the traditional Luau at one of the resorts, so you can enjoy plenty of Hawaian food. Would love to go back again, we really enjoyed our honeymoon at the beautiful island of Hawaii.

Great value for resort like stay
By ,
We stayed here for a week in December, and could not have been happier. The price is a steal.. the lobby is beautiful, great pool, and amazing. Perfect view of the sunrises and sunsets. I would recommend a room with partial ocean view, so you have a view of the ocean, but also of the mountains and can watch the sunrises. The appetizers place is the only one worthwhile eating at, but there are plenty of places to eat nearby. Rooms are average, but they are spacious enough, perfect place to stay if you want to save a little bit of money and will not be spending too much time in the room. Would definatey stay again!

Great Grounds!
By ,
The grounds and common areas of this resort are lovely, spacious, and have a real Hawaiian feel...lots of Island artifacts and beautiful flowering tropical plants and trees. We had a room with an ocean view over-looking a tide pool where we could view fish, eels, octopus and green sea turtles. The staff was always pleasant and helpful. There's a wonderful little shop right off the lobby that sells quality gifts as well as a full line of sundries a traveler might need The room itself was a disappointment. The furnishings were rather ordinary and the bathroom was shabby and not well-appointed. We would stay there again, though!

Lovely resort that needs an upgrade in their rooms
By ,
I selected this hotel based on positive reviews. However, our room was horrible (stained carpeting and torn bed spread), so we asked for another room. The carpeting in our new room #515 was better but still needs replacing. The bathroom above ours leaked and we had to ask for maintenance to come in and fix the problem. On the positive side, our room was large with a king bed, two chairs, table and ottoman, desk/chair; fabulous view of the pool area and ocean/tide pools. Service at the bar was great, although drinks were a little pricy. Excellent dinner at their main restaurant. We enjoyed the mai tais while watching the sun set and seeing the many turtles sleeping on the rocks in front of us in the tide pool. I would definitely return here only if they upgrade their rooms. We were at least lucky to have been upgraded to an ocean deluxe room without any additional charges. This place is located about 5 miles from the center of Kona on Alii drive. Pick a room closer to the ocean to avoid the street noise. Also, the "beach" next to the hotel is the BEST place for snorkling. Bring an underwater camera!! I had the opportunity to swim within inches of turtles, morish idols, trigger fish, puffers, parrot fish, etc. This is the best place for snorking, expecially for beginners. Lastly, just up the street is a shopping center, where you can grocery shop: Pick up the large bottle of mai tai mix and dark rum and save on your bar bill by making your own mai tais. Good place to shop for bottled water, sandwiches, and sushi!

Nice area but sub-par overall
By ,
Nice ocean view, and great bar hovering over tidepools. You can see various colorful fish and sea turtles swim by. Hotel restaurant is a buffet and could use a lot of improvement; food tasted average and was of limited variety. Ants were all over the fruit/dessert area and stray cats beg for food as you eat. Restaurant overlooks small swimming pool. Nightlife is limited to music/dancing... but when I went not many people were participating. There is also a tennis court but I suggest bringing your own equipment because the rental center closes early. There is a jewelry and souvineer shop but they are filled with your typical shirts/keychains/jewelry... overpriced of course. Hotel rooms were on the shabby side. Not the worst place I've stayed, but definitely could use a lot of improvement. Various stains on wall and carpet added to the shabby feeling. I suggest paying more and staying at a higher end place.

Bizarro Hotel Stay
By ,
We showed up at 8:45pm at our 4-star hotel, the Outrigger on the Big Island, and were informed that I needed to pay $5 and run 100 yards back to my rental car to put some parking pass on my car. This isn't a high population area; I was baffled. We were hungry, but it turned out that their restaurant closes at 9:00pm so we went hungry. We proceeded to our 4-star room and discovered that it didn't even have a bathroom door! Seriously, there was a sliding thing sort of like a sliding closet door without a lock, but it had a several inch gap on the bottom and the top so that all smells and sounds could make their way around the luxurious room. By this time, we were getting laughs about the place, so we took note of the ancient bed covers that scratch the skin, not a down comforter like we had at our previous night's hotel. I woke up early the next morning tired but hungry, so I decided to go out to the balcony while my significant other got ready for the day in the "bathroom" or "bath stall" since it wasn't really a room. She had walked in to use our room's shower stall with her sandals because the floor of the shower stall was crusty and decrepid. Yes, that's right. The room didn't have a bathtub; it had a shower stall only big enough for people of 300 lbs. or less. Thank God she isn't high maintenance or she might have dumped me right there. As I stood on the balcony, I got a nice view of the trash bin below and the employee parking lot. Something smelled, but I might not have noticed except my sense of smell was heightened because I was so hungry. We made it out of there before 9:00am to go to the volcanoes; we decided to skip the free continental breakfast you could get if you sat through a presentation on timeshares (though the card did say, "this is not a timeshare presentation, classy). What else? The swimming pool happened to be undergoing some type of repair the week we were there. No secret charges appeared on my credit card, so that part went okay. All in all a horrific experience, though unintentionally comical. The word "Outrigger" will forever make me laugh and shake my head in disgust. Oh, and you might ask if we complained? Yeah, we filled out the comment card but of course didn't hear from them, I wasn't about to waste time on vacation bickering with their staff about a missing bathroom door.
