We will never stay there again!
The hotel is set a considerable distance from most attractions and amenities in and around Honolulu. It does have "beach front" but no real beach, just a seawall and rocks below. There is a nice underground parking garage, but this is the end of nice. We had a travel agent book us into the place in 2000, with specific instructions not to pick a flop-house. We were looking for an affordable stay in Hawaii without a lot of frills However, a flop-house is what we got! First we were told that the hotel was overbooked and that we would have to change rooms after 2 nights. When we got to our room, we began to feel that we had made a terrible mistake. Pealing paint, worn furniture, 2 kinds of ants & 2 kinds of roaches greeted us. The air conditioning is supplied by 2 window units. Pigeons found a nice roosting place just under both air conditioners and kept us awake all night with their noises. The next day, I called the Turtle Bay Hilton (now the Turtle Bay Resort) and they said they could accommodate us for only $40 more per night. The innkeepers were nice and let us out of our room reservations (after all, they were overbooked anyway). You would think that for $150 per day that you would get a decent place to stay, but that wasn't the case for the Diamond Head Beach Hotel.
