beware.....choose wisely
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/24/08
While on our trip in Oahu, my family and I had an okay stay at the Ala Moana Hotel despite the fact that it took the front desk quite long to check us in, and the fact that the maid left only two towel sets everyday (even though we requested for their to be four left everyday in advance), anyway the stay there was okay and we thought everything was okay when we left...But, when we arrived home I received a $600 charge on my credit card. When I contacted the hotel about the charge, the assistant manager said that the carpet in the room we stayed in was damaged with cigarette burns, which is bizarre since none of us smoke. When I spoke to the General Manager later that day, he told me that he did not know what the burns were from but were large scorch marks...so now I have been told two different things. I had him email me the pictures, which showed four small round stains that my children remembered seeing when we arrived and thought were dirt marks. We can't believe that they are charging us $600 for their dirty carpets. BEWARE!!!! Have a hotel employee do a walk through when you check in so you are not slapped with a bogus charge. The management was poor and the services were just as bad. My family and I are from Maui and we thought that the service that we got was a poor reflection of how people from Hawaii and should treat their customers, whether they be from Hawaii or elsewhere. We are never staying there again. BEWARE BAD SERVICE.

Extremely convenient
By Rob, 6/2/08
I love going to the Ala Moana Hotel; check-in was fast and friendly, and the location is absolutely perfect! The room was comfortable, but the lowest rate rooms are a bit small (the "2 beds" is actually one large bed and a fold-out couch). The rooms were clean, and the beds have hypo-allergenic pillows. There is free internet access for people with laptops. However, the best part of the hotel is the location! It is within close walking distance to the Ala Moana shopping center, the Convention center, and 7-11. Further away is Ala Moana beach, Wal-mart, Sam's Club, Ross, and several eating places like L&L, Coldstone Creamery, etc. In short, the perfect location if you're on vacation!

I recommend this hotel
By NancyS, 6/1/08
This hotel is out of the touristy crush of Waikiki and very close to a large, beautiful beach park featuring one small lagoon, one larger beach and plenty of great people-, boat-, surfer-, and bird-watching. If you like upscale shopping centers one is across the street. If you go there, skip the department and chain stores and go to Blue Hawaii. Try their acai berry bowl. Superb! The room is probably the smallest I have ever been in but it has everything I need. The downstairs lobby and deck by the pool are good spaces to hang out. There is a large supermarket/drug store a short walk from the hotel, so you can easily get your favorite snacks and forgetten toiletry items. You can also get prepared meals and a foot massage there if you want to! The staff are adequate, some very friendly. There are a surprising number of shops in the lobby. For some reason this hotel is where a congregation of Hawaiian Orthodox Jews holds it service. An unexpected bit of local color.

It's ok, if it's your thing...
By -=D=-, 1/11/08
It's true that the rooms are pretty nice and newly renovated, but what really bugs me is when hotels call a room an "ocean view room" when that view is obtained by hanging your head over the corner railing of your lanai. The beds were a quite odd experience. Felt hard as a rock upon doing the "push with the hand test" but i never felt bad sleeping on them! Maybe i need a harder mattress at home! :) That aside, around 1pm-5pm most places to eat are closed giving the lobby a very ghost town feel. This put me in a somber mood more than anything else. It felt kinda sad at times. The convention-goers and older hotel guests didn't help this either. :/ I am not a big shopper, so being next to the Ala Moana shopping center didn't do much for me...but if shopping is your thing...you'll absolutely LOVE it. I'd say if you love shopping and are looking for something very quiet and secluded feeling (tho chaotic when there is a convention going on) it's right up your alley. If you want a hotel in the middle of it all, with lots of young people around to meet....this isn't the place. Oh, and lastly, I read some of the comments on smoking here. Even being a non-smoker myself....I did find it odd. There was even a little note saying there'd be a $200 fine if you smoked on your lanai....seemed a bit harsh, and i feel for you smokers, but it didn't effect me! hehe

Great hotel, great location
By MaryF, 4/22/07
We spent seven nights at the Ala Moana Hotel. The hotel was recently renovated and looks very modern. They have LCD flat panel tv's in all of the rooms, even the cheaper room we reserved in the Kona Tower. High speed internet is free in the rooms. They have a heated pool with poolside restaurant, and the hotel is only two blocks from the beach. The hotel is right next door to the Ala Moana shopping center, which is half regular outdoor mall and half extremely fancy mall. It has the largest food court I have ever seen, and it also has several nice restaurants. We walked over there almost every day for food. I'm sure we'll be staying at the Ala Moana Hotel again the next time we go to Honolulu.

a stay in paradise
By LJ, 4/13/07
I stayed in one of the rooms (928) and enjoyed it very much. I found a business card that was left in the room under the glass top. It was the card of the owner. Very nice man. Was helpful in pointing out where to go and what to see. I will be renting from him in the future. The front desk personel was kind and friendly. Dislikes was the parking.

Great... with one problem...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/9/07
Room was clean and comfortable. Cost was very reasonable. Location is perfect (we live on Maui and didn't feel the need to be right on the beach, just near shopping.) The problem was smoking. We all realize the hazards of smoking... no need to go there. However, we didn't fully realize what was meant by the Hotel's smoking policy. They do not allow smoking anywhere on their property. Period. It does not matter if you are outdoors and more than 20 feet from an entrance (what is called for by state law). If you light up, expect security to approach and warn you away. One encounter with security was at 6:30AM 2/3's down the ramp (about 20 feet wide) to the Ala Moana Shopping Center's parking structure. The nearest no smoking sign is about 60 feet away. It would be nice if security had something to offer other than a curt "leave hotel property". Perhaps an outdoor area that meets state guidelines would work. As it is, I certainly felt less-than-welcome there.

The Best Value in Hawaii
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/28/06
I recently stayed at the Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu. The rooms are newly renovated with brand new stylish furniture and marble countertops in the bathrooms. The location is the best in Hawaii, next to the Ala Moana shopping mall. The rooms are also very reasonably priced. I've stayed at many different hotels in Hawaii and this place is definitely the best value. I will definitely stay there on my next trip to Hawaii and would recommend this place to anyone going to Honolulu.
