Quaint historic hotel, in need of updates.

The ambiance of this hotel is unmistakable. From rooms tucked away down winding halls, an entrance greeting you with purely southern architectural pillars, this place is visually exciting...until you get inside. Although the hotel has been recently renovated, the hotel still leaves much to be desired. I stayed in a private balcony room, which was adorable and romantic with two wicker rocking chairs on the private porch. The balcony, however, overlooked a busy street and was only secluded and romantic after 11pm. Though the bedding was clean and expensive (per 3.5-4 star hotels) the housekeeper did a terrible job cleaning. We found chewing tobacco (used) in our room after our first night of rest. It was either tucked into the sheets with us and dislodged, or it had been under the bed from some previous guest. (To the hotel's credit, the room was given a scrub down the second night under the supervision of the head of housekeeping). The bathrooms were small, undercleaned, and the stand up shower (no bathtub, for those who like to relax in this sort of hotel) had a curtain cut too short for the curve of the tub and left the floor soaking after even the shortest showering. Hotel lobby left coffee in the morning, and sweet southern tea at night. Wonderful restaurant on premises. Reasonable room service fees. I loved the uniqueness of this hotel, very memorable. Even with its flaws, it is quite a charmer. And, the staff seems to know you, remember your face, room and requests. Everything you could ask for, service wise. Very good staff. I would say the only complaints would lie in the "needs a second renovation to keep up with the times" department. But, what else would you expect from an old southern building? Lovely place, and probably the best place to stay in Augusta. My recommendation: Skip the local Marriott and stay here for some authentic southern charm.
