Turtle Crawl Surprise
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/19/06
We have just returned from a weekend at the Turtle Crawl Inn. We love the Florida West Coast beaches and the pictures of this hotel on their website were promising. However, we were met with some surprises when we arrived. My family and I stayed in their garden view condos. The rooms were very large and clean. However, they did have minor repairs that could have been improved for aesthetic purposes. My parents had room #62 which is featured on their website. It included a king size bed in a private bedroom; a large walk in closet to keep rafts, fishing poles and the like; a living room With a fold-out couch; a bathroom with a tub-shower; and a full kitchen. We stayed in the adjoining room #61. It included two double beds, a shower, and a full size refrigerator in the bathroom (strange right?) It also had a microwave and coffee maker. This room had a porch, but we did not use this as the floor was drenched and had a rotten egg smell from the sprinklers well water that sprayed it daily. I would avoid this room and the room above it if possible. We found it to be very loud. It is close to the road and the road noise kept us awake at night. The air conditioner was also a bit noisy. We ended up resorting to sleeping on the pull out couch in the next room. The hotel is definitely showing its age. However, the staff is friendly and helpful. The pool was smaller than we expected. Only about the size of a normal backyard pool, but it was clean. We were surprised to find that the hotel does not offer daily maid service. This is not advertised. Guests are expected to take out their trash daily and change out their towels. We did not mind this but would have liked to be notified about this in advance. The beach is nice, but does not have much of the powder white sand we are used to on the west coast. The beach has recently been refurbished with gray, gritty sand that is not quite as nice. The refurbishment project was also taking place while we were there a bit down the beach. We were not notified of this. Luckily our stay ended just as the project was nearing the hotel. We managed a nice stay, but we probably will not return to this hotel. We found it to be a bit over priced for what you get. They are doing some work on their Tower Condos. Perhaps that building would be a better choice if considering this hotel.
