Don't bother - Horrible, unpleasant & pricey
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/30/08
The room looks nice, but it is very noisy. We could hear every single step from next door & upstairs, not to mention that guests were up middle of night flushing toilets! We frequently take short trips to Monterey-Peninsula area. Those B&B(s) in Pacific Grove, e.g., Gosby House, Green Gable they all have better service than Ventana. I am a regular massage customer in the city, and always enjoy it & feel relaxed afterward. At Ventana, there were other guests getting massage upstairs, and I could hear the noise & steps while I am getting one! Moreover, the massager was more than 15 minutes late and she did not even bother to apologize for keeping me waiting. I do not think Kabuki would ever allow this from happening. I was also surprised that Ventana also does not even have a steamed bath like Sonoma Mission Inn. I complained about these problems to general manager Jonathan, he was ignorant and kept giving a bunch of excuses. The Spa manager Mary was no better; same old story teller. The surroundings here are serene & peaceful. That is the only thing we enjoyed, otherwise I wish I could give this place Zero star.

An Expensive Letdown
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/6/08
We were just at Ventana Inn and would have to say that the room was the best part of our stay. It was well appointed and cozy. The bellmen were generally kind. That being said, the rest of our experience was poor. The service in the restaurant, le Cielo, was terrible and the food, mediocre. also the location of the restaurant was a long way downhill from our room and in the dark. The continental breakfast is supposed to be served in the library, closer to our room, but was not. We had to go to the lobby which was much further away and crowded, not enough tables let alone chairs. We ended up trying to juggle coffee cups, dishes and silverware. Not a pleasant relaxing experience. We were told on checking in that there would be a yoga class on Sat at 3 p.m. in the library. The spot was maked on my map of the facility. After planning our day around this class, I went to the library at 3 p.m. The class was cancelled because of a wedding, but that information was not posted. I had to call the front desk to find that out. Considering the $2200+ spent for 2 nights, I call our experience "an expensive letdown."

The perfect spot for a wedding anniversary!
Ventana was the perfect spot for us to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. This resort is easily one of the most romantic places in Big Sur, and we've spent a great deal of time on the coast. We reserved the Romantic Getaway package, so our visit included two 90-minute, tandem, in room massages and two spa treatments. Allegria, the on-site spa, is relaxing and comforting. Everyone is knowledgable, skilled, and highly professional. We also had a meal for two at the restaurant, which wasn't the best food we've ever tasted, but the setting was amazing. The sunset over the Pacific made for a perfect evening. I'd avoid the nature hike- it's a little silly. You would have more fun exploring the grounds on your own. Also, be sure to try the Japanese baths and wear your robe wherever you go. The afternoon wine-tasting is also worthwhile. Ventana is luxurious, romantic, and fun. We'll be back!

It's a magical place
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/22/07
We have been to Ventana many times, and each time it is more special than before. It is such a peaceful and reflective environment. You are so close to nature and so aware of the wildlife around you. If you need to "chill" this is the place to go!

A BIT OF A LET DOWN
By Joe, 12/1/06
My wife and I were married there earlier this year.....the lady Barbara that runs the elopement package arranging is an absolute moron to deal with. For almost three grand (not including the room) you would expect to be a bit more pampered....we had to drive 40 minutes North to Carmel to pick up our wedding license from some other idiot they keep on staff. Our flowers that were supposed to be in our room did not arrive until the last day when we were about to leave (wouldn't you think they would be there the minute you arrived?) It is a beautiful location.... I just would not suggest an elopement there.....too much stress from having to figure everything out on your own. Not only that but our lodge was in the first building next to a room that had been almost completely burned down. The window was wide open and we peaked in several times. Employees went in and out of that room cleaning up the mess. It looks like the fireplace caught fire....that was just kind of a weird situation being up there next to the room that almost burned down. All in all a bit of a let down-- especially for the 5,000 + we spent that weekend. I could have gone to New York.

Heaven on Earth
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/24/06
Big Sur will take your breath away! Ventana's was perfectly designed to compliment its' setting. It's hard to decide if it's more beautiful during the day (gorgeous forest, ocean and hillside views) or night (starlit and tranquil with the perfect soft lighting ). I'd definitely recommend a room with a fireplace and relaxing in the morning with the self serve buffet. We visited in March when the rhodendrons were engulfed in colour. A romantic or relaxing oasis! It would be perfect for a honeymoon or anniversary.

So right for so long goes so wrong
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/20/06
First, let me say that, overall, I love Ventana Inn and have often recommended it to friends and associates who visit from here or Europe. The views and the location are unique, the food is usually fresh and well presented. That being said -- the restaurant staff is sometimes so inconsiderate and thoughtless that it staggers the imagination. The last time I was there, I took a younger friend for her 35th birthday. She was moving away to the east coast and Ventana was her choice to say "goodbye" to California. We were seated on the little side balcony, very private and special--except that the staff came out every few minutes, talking, and even argueing about internal staff problems. Then, unbelieveably, and even in spite of our polite but fervent request that they please wait for obvious reasons -- just after our meal had been brought to our table, they decided to lower the canvas awning -- and we were drenched with the remnants of that mornings early rain. Us, our meal, our spirits. I haven't been back. For me, la ventana is closed.

A nice place to relax and enjoy the nature. You can wander around the area on the beach or just sitting in front of the house reading books

Great view
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/16/06
We go here for lunch everytime we do this drive on Hwy 1. It's the best view you can get of Big Sur. It's nice to have a long, relaxed lunch on the patio with a nice cocktail.
