Description

The only hotel located on San Francisco's famous Union Square, The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square is just steps from first-class shopping, world-renowned dining, award-winning theater and a bustling arts district. The next 100 years have truly begun at The Westin St. Francis as the hotel celebrates the completion of a $40 million transformation. This is the most extensive restoration undertaken by the property since the reconstruction after The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Known as the "Grand Dame" of Union Square, The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square opened in 1904, and has been a symbol of elegance for San Francisco for more than a century. While the classic aesthetic of the hotel's rich past is honored, its modern amenities embrace the future, creating a perfect blend of timelessness. Approximately $12 million was invested in the complete transformation of all 614 guestrooms and common areas in the Main Building. Guestrooms bridge the world between the old and new with a fresh sophistication that perfectly showcases the classically beautiful 1906 architecture and boast signature Westin Heavenly Beds®, 37" flat screen televisions and ergonomic desk chairs. Hallways and common areas have been refreshed with a fusion of present-day and classic San Francisco - contemporary furniture and plush carpeting are juxtaposed with time-honored black and white historical photography of the hotel and San Francisco.

Centrally located
This is a very nice hotel, but it's a gamble on how nice a room you will get. The old part of the hotel has bigger rooms for the most part, that are "regal" but the new towers have the better views of the City. You are paying for the location as well as the hotel room, so it is expensive. You will have to pay to park, but in S.F. that is the way it is, no getting around it unless you want to do the taxi thing. You can walk everywhere for shopping and eatting from this hotel. Chinatown is only a few blocks away. The Curan Theater is one block away, along with a few bars. Other attractions, such as the zoo, the beach, Golden Gate Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, ect will require sometype of transportation to and from if you stay at this hotel. I will continue to stay at this hotel when I come to S.F. overnight.

Probably won't be back
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/1/08
The room was lovely and the bed was very comfy, but there was a very loud bar apparently outside across the street and it sounded like the band was playing in our room until very late, both nights we were there. They particular seemed to favor Jimmy Hendrix. It was very loud and annoying. Also the vanity in the bathroom was cracked at the corner and it had been taped back together with packing tape. I really expected a bit more than that from such a nice hotel. When we checked in, we discovered that there was only 1 bed in the room and we had asked for 2. The desk clerk was very rude about it and made a big point of telling us we would have to pay extra to get 2 beds. He also insisted we do not even touch the minibar or we would be charged. What the heck was that about? The location is wonderful, the lobby is beautiful, but we didn't receive any level of service to warrant the price. I think we'll be staying somewhere else next time we're in San Francisco.

NOT WORTH THE TROUBLE OR EXPENSE
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/3/07
We were expecting a nice room for the price and hotel rating and to our dismay, the room was tiny with a twin bed on the older part of the building. No insulation whatsoever. We could hear conferences going on and loud music in their function rooms vibrating through the guest rooms till 1:30 AM and the best remedy the manager could give us was EARPLUGS...now is this a joke??? You book an expensive room to be comfortable in the hope of getting a good nights' sleep and you end up using earplugs. If sleep is of importance to you...DON'T book at this hotel!!! There's extra charge for the use of their gym, which is totally unheard of in other hotels. They also charge extra for internet access. Parking fees' horrendous at $54/day. So if you're on a budget shop for cheaper parking garages close to the hotel. Other than that San Francisco is a great city and we'll keep going back for more just not at st. francis, westin..

Bad Experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/19/07
I stayed at the Westin for a few days during the summer of 2007 in the "main" area. The room was very tiny. There was only enough room for my bed, a television and a tiny dresser. The carpet was green and obviously very old. Nothing in the room was grand or luxurious and I had NO view. I paid $345.00 per night for that. AND in addition to the $345.00 per night, they held $150 per night on my card for "incidentals." The service was great and everyone was efficient. the bathrooms were small but the showerheads were nice. The only good thing about the Westin is the fitness center. There I sought relief. I would workout for an hour, at $12.00 per day, take a long shower, put on a Westin plush white robe, and sit and drink tea and read for an hour. It was the only saving grace for the Westin. I would rather have stayed at Hotel Nikko or the Hilton. That is what I suggest you do!!!!!!

San Fran's Best!
By pono k., 7/13/07
This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at; it's not only clean and nice, but it's right in the heart of a lot of stores to shop at.

Great
By Steve, 7/6/07
Flew into SF and stayed at the Westin St Francis on the first night of honeymoon before driving down Coast. Staff was very accomodating and friendly, location was perfect, facilities top notch. Was slightly surprised by parking surcharge, but not enough to tarnish the overall experience. Would definitely stay there again.

Think twice before staying at Westin St. Francis in San Francisco
Location is great because it's close walking distance to the attractions, but the homeless flood right by the Westin. Heater does not work. Just blew cold air on 78 degrees. It was freezing. Even heard 2 others in elevator about heater complaints. Keeping warm by hair dryer. Shower pressure was great though. Bed sheets & towels left us with a rash. Small room for the price. When you put out the money here, don't expect much. Maybe it's great for a third world country, but we are in California. The staff were all very friendly & eager to assist to our needs. The Westin workout room was great, but headphones were dirty, one had makeup on the earpiece, so bring your own. The Spa treatments were so so. I've had better. I was given a description of a treatment one way & was given an entirely different treatment. One of the aromatherapist had horrible bedside manners. I'm not picky, but I do know about quality service & cleanliness. We parked our vechicle in hotel garage & did valet. We recieved our vechicle with a dead battery they neglected to let us know, maybe they left the lights on, so drive home was challenging. However, I believe if staying in San Francisco, this would be the best hotel there. I wouldn't attempt the other hotels.

Westin St. Francis
By Stuart Chambers, 5/19/07
Ask for one of the old rooms they have much more personality. I have stayed in both the new tower and the old section of the hotel and prefer the grand and historic section. Great location on Union Square.

Average 3 star with poor service
By fgm45, 4/19/07
I am really surprised by the good reviews of this hotel. I stayed here for 5 nights last year and found the service to be way below what I would expect in a 3 star - and Im not picky at all. The location is perfect but everything else from the staff to the cleanliness of the rooms is substandard. For the first time in my life I even wrote a letter to their headquarters because I thought they would be interested in my experience. Didnt even get a responce. With so many other options just skip this place in San Francisco.
