Description

The only hotel located on San Francisco's famous Union Square, The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square is just steps from first-class shopping, world-renowned dining, award-winning theater and a bustling arts district. The next 100 years have truly begun at The Westin St. Francis as the hotel celebrates the completion of a $40 million transformation. This is the most extensive restoration undertaken by the property since the reconstruction after The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Known as the "Grand Dame" of Union Square, The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square opened in 1904, and has been a symbol of elegance for San Francisco for more than a century. While the classic aesthetic of the hotel's rich past is honored, its modern amenities embrace the future, creating a perfect blend of timelessness. Approximately $12 million was invested in the complete transformation of all 614 guestrooms and common areas in the Main Building. Guestrooms bridge the world between the old and new with a fresh sophistication that perfectly showcases the classically beautiful 1906 architecture and boast signature Westin Heavenly Beds®, 37" flat screen televisions and ergonomic desk chairs. Hallways and common areas have been refreshed with a fusion of present-day and classic San Francisco - contemporary furniture and plush carpeting are juxtaposed with time-honored black and white historical photography of the hotel and San Francisco.

Would stay again and recommend!!!
By Mary S, 10/18/10
My sister and I came to San Fransico for the first time and stayed at the Westin St Francis. All the staff were professional AND friendly. Our room was very clean, no bugs, we checked, and the maid service was wonderful--not intrusive but there when we needed them. We ordered room service for breakfast which was great and the room had 1/2 and 1/2 every day for our coffee which we greatly appreciated and not the "powdered" creamer. We had taxi service readlly and since my daughter works in San Fransico we had a personal tour of Napa Valley and Carmel and drove down the "shore" line. I would feel very comfortable staying at this hotel. Since I work in Branson MO where we have a lot of tourist, I know hotels and this one, the Westin is definately a "NUMBER ONE" in our books.

Always a great place to stay
By Miss Mary P, 7/19/10
Always a great place to stay. Location is amazing, right in union square. Rooms, although small and somewhat claustrophobic, are well kept for SF. We only stay at the St. Francis now.

Don't let the bed bugs bite!
By LAwoman, 2/26/10
When we first arrived at the hotel we thought it was very pretty. I was a little surprised that they did not have an airport shuttle, but luckily it was a very easy trip from SFO on BART. They bumped us up to a tower room (since we read many reviews recommending it). The room was very clean (or so we thought!). The bathtub was very big and the bed was incredibly comfortable. We were definitely surprised at the lack of amenities offered. They literally charge for EVERYTHING. Things that are normally free at most nicer hotels were not. They charged for the gym and for the internet. Like I said, there was no airport shuttle. No newspaper at our door- nothing. Surprising since we paid a lot and have stayed in nicer hotels where they offer such things. The other problem came when we got home. During our stay I noticed some marks on my arms but thought they might just be the product of a detergent that I'm allergic to. NO. Turns out they were bed bugs. Both myself and my boyfriend came home with bites on our wrists and I had bites on my stomach, hips and thighs. They were itchy and painful. I called the hotel manager and she said "Well, you should have said something while you were here so that we could have taken pictures. There's really nothing we can do now." How about check the mattress to start with? She was incredibly unhelpful. I currently have a call in to corporate to see if they can resolve the matter... but based on the reviews about the customer service I'll be surprised if they do anything. I was definitely surprised by this outcome because I have never in my life experience bed bugs and never thought it would happen in a hotel with supposed star rating in a popular city. Yikes!

The best place to stay
By Wilbur, 2/22/10
This is the most wonderful hotel to stay at if you want to be right down town San Francisco. "I will meet you at the clock" is what you say when you want to meet at the St Francis hotel. I used to live within driving distance of the City but now need to stay in a hotel to visit and I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Definitely memorable...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/6/09
Not only everyone complained about waiting for the elevators, when we decided to take the stairs 20 stories down to reach the lobby, we've been thrown on the sidewalk by the memorably rude security. Make sure you bring your sense of humor with you!

Avoid at all cost
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/10/09
Over priced, and over rated. Dirty hotel. I saw some trash next to the elevators that was not picked up for three days. Rude staff, too filled with their delusions of this dump they call a hotel. A motel 6 would be better. Location is good, there are other hotels in the area. I will never stay at this place, even for free. What a dump.

RIP OFF
By tired, 5/19/09
pricequoted was not honored at check out.room service tray was left out side of door 3 days. Removed to elevator by us. Beer found under bathroom sink receipt dated 2006. This place is over rated and misled us on pricing when reservations weremade. The manager would not speak to us on check out. Now we know where not to stay in sanfrancisco .coffee in their lobby is 3.69 acup it is only 2.19 at the airport. We will mark this up for a lesson learned. Our group had a total of 3 rooms so they have lost a few frequent travelers.

What century are they living in??
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/5/09
Overpriced; under value. This place is a come on of over priced add-ons. There is NO justification to charge $15/day for Internet access.. in fact, wireless was FREE at this very hotel a few years ago. AND they CHARGE for access to the gym... $12/day. What century are they living in? Only restaurante open after 7:30PM is the over priced Miro where they forgot that we are in the worst recession since the Great Depression. The bar menu has $20 plates and when the food comes it is $2/bite. Ridiculous! Go ionly if you have money to burn

Excellent hotel in the heart of everything!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/30/08
Chinatown, SFMOMA, world-class shopping, are all within walking distance! Forget getting a car! The hotel has alot of character and it reminded me alot of Europe. Yes everything isn't perfect but that's the charm. Staff was extremely polite although you do have to keep a close watch on all the extra charges if you're on budget. Getting this kind of luxury (with alot of character) in the heart of San Francisco at this price can't be beat!
