B E D B U G S!!!! RUN AWAY
By wanderlust, 12/11/09
We stayed at here December '09 and came home with bedbugs. We are now facing thousands of dollars to get rid of them. We were wondering why it was so cheap, and so empty, and why there was blood on the wall. Now we know. The room had a musty stink as well every so often. It's too bad b/c it is in a prime location, but, NOTHING is worth having your home infested with bedbugs. All it take one travelling home with you to lay eggs and take roost. So disgusting. Stay away, and check the bedbug directory before reserving any hotel.....

bedbugs
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/17/09
You will see this in other reviews. I had my doubts but found a bedbug within hours of moving in. And yes, I immediately packed my stuff, went downstairs and asked them to take any charges off my bill--which they did. Had they not, they would have been shown the dead bug that I had squashed on their own stationary. Bedbugs are easy to identify--when you squash them they smell--exactly like a stinkbug. With the difference that the former bite, and can travel in your bags back to where you live. And if you get them in your home, they are EXTREMELY difficult to get rid of. Anyway, I know bedbugs are all over San Francisco and that older hotels are facing a nightmare. But I don't want to be anywhere near them. I've had the experience once and that was enough. Caveat Emptor.

Charming, in the heart of it all!
By SPARKY, 6/24/09
My partner and I stayed at The Powell Hotel, and our overall experience was superb to say the least! Charming in every sense of the word-the hotel, the city, the vibe! The hotel has a New York feel to it (noise included, it's The City!) -location is in the heart of it all. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. It was fun taking a cable car ride (our bodies dangling on the side brushing up against the crisp cold air) from Fisherman's Wharf area right to the front of our hotel. Shopping galore everywhere you look! Eating venues within walking distance to satisfy every palet. Transportation is impeccable-absolutely no car needed throughout our 4 day stay. You can transport to all major attractions for under $10 combined with some walking, BUT it's the big city- what do you expect (you not only will, but SHOULD enjoy walking)! We have no problem staying again or recommending it to our friends and family! p.s. Gay Friendly hotel, area, and city!

Has done it´s job...
By ., 4/7/09
The Hotel is very central, nice and save surrundings, all is just in front of the door. But you also hear everything which is just in front of the door, the whole night long. If you have to work an the trip ask for a quiet room. The free wireless internet access is just a joke, was not possible to connect most of the time because it was constantly overloaded. The access password is so easy to find out so that I think that the complete neighborhood logs in and the guests have no chance to get an access. Besides of this the stuff is very friendly and helpful. If the wireless internet access would have been better my rating would also have been better.

Bed Bugs
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/22/08
Bed Bugs! I stayed in room 506 and at 11:30pm I woke up feeling little itchy things crawling on my face and arms. It didn't hurt, but it began itching and swelling. I turned on the light and searched. I think I saw one, but couldn't be sure. I was bit 8 times on by right wrist, left bicep and twice on the chin. I called down and they moved me to another room that night. The next morning I spoke with the manager. I said he had housekeeping do a thorough check of the room and they found nothing. He asked me if I wanted some medication for the itching. He never offered to refund or discount me. I would not recommend the hotel at all. Besides the bugs and bad management, the hallways are very noisy (creaky wood floors with thin carpets). The nice aspects were it was in union square and was kind of a cool looking old building. I hope you have better luck, but I have to remind you that bed bugs are by far the most difficult infestation to get rid of. At the very least, don't stay in room 506. Nite nite, don't let the bed bugs bite!

a great value
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/27/07
I'm not a big fan of froo froo Four Seasons-esque hotels, but I like a decent and stylish place to stay, and the Powell Hotel fulfilled that. For its price and location, the Powell is a great value. I stayed in a room with a full-size bed. There's no denying that the room itself was tiny..even a little suffocating, but it was clean and the bathrooms were newly renovated. I was happy with the valet service too- quick, fairly painless considering you're in a extremely bustling, congested part of town. Most importantly, the hotel has a great location. If you don't want to drive out too far, just walk out the door and do some shopping or dining. You get a lot of the Powell Hotel without breaking the bank.

Would never return
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/31/07
First we got to the hotel we were informed there was $35.00 a day parking fee. we were never told of this when we booked the room. How can they charge you over double the amount of any other parking in the city when you are staying at the hotel? The key card never worked on the door after going up and down the stairs 4 times was given a "master key" and told they have had problems with that door for several days. the could not fix it in that time? The hotel is not in the best of areas When asked why the main door locked evry night told it was to keed the homeless out. Room was dirty my family would not even use the shower very dirty. Manger was very rude when i told him of my problems.and none of my concerns were addressed. What seems like a great value at first is not worth it. Bill came to close to $200.00 a night. We were driving from New York and stayed in diferent hotels every night this was by far the worst

A Great Location
By Ricky Oyama, 7/5/07
Our flight to San Francisco was delayed by 3 hours. We arrived at SFO International airport on a Friday evening, hopped on BART and arrived at the Powell Station after 10PM. Right up the escalator, not more than 30 feet was the entrance to the Powell Hotel. Due to Security, the front door was locked. We pressed the buzzer and was let in. Check in was fast and friendly. The room was what we expected with a king size bed. We didn't spend time in the room during the four days, left at 9 AM and returned around 9 PM. The price is competitive with other hotels that I checked on the web. The location is great due to being close to the cable cars turn round, BART, Caltrain, Union Square Dept. Stores, San Francisco Center, Market Street, Chinatown, AT&T Park, etc. Checking out was simple, fast, and friendly. Took the escalator right outside the front door to BART and walked straight to terminal 3 at the airport with ease. We knew there will be noise from sirens, trucks, cable car bells, autos, people, etc. so why complain about it. After all, this is San Francisco, if not I would've stayed home in Kailua, Hawaii...

would go again
I was worried about the hotel based on previous reviews. I went in early December and asked for a quiet room away from the streets. We also had a sitting area and 2 double beds. This was not a recently remolded room but the accomidations were nice. Very old style San Francisco, with high ceilings and register heaters. The room was spacious and the bathroom adequate. We were on the 4th floor and in the middle of the hotel which did not have the street noise. The service at the desk was very friendly and helpful. We used the valet for the car and they would call ahead to minimize the wait. (not the hotels valet service) The best part of our stay was the location-right outside the cable car turn around and the value was great!

Wonderful Oasis
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/24/06
I am a single woman traveling by myself. I felt comfortable and safe, the location was unbelievable. My room was on the smaller side but had everything I needed and it was quiet as well.
