Very Disappointed - Dirty
By Martin, 1/1/07
We stayed 3 nights and would never stay there again. The bathroom was dirty and moldy smelling, carpets in the room were old and dirty looking. Bed coverings were moldy smelling. Room funishings were beat up and scratched. Lobby was being repaired and in disarray, even the gardens were not well cared for and messy. The location is the absolute worst, with homeless people in the street and only a few blocks from "skid row" district in LA. All guestes should be warned to never leave the hotel on foot at night. Internet connection cost $9.95 per day, most top hotels do not charge for this.

Definately not 3 star
By Kat in Vegas, 8/7/05
The outside of the hotel gives you the appearance that it'll be immaculate, but it's far from that. The furniture in my room was damaged, and there was something dark on the walls. The staff appear to be very busy......The whole time I was checking in, the clerk was on the telephone and did not bother to look at me once.

It was great, will come back again!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/26/05
They have a friendly staff and their room service (although a bit expensive) is very fast and responsive to most of your needs. The rooms are what you expect from other hotels, but they add a little bit more taste with a few asian inspired details in the room. Getting to your room from the underground parking garage (they charge for garage parking) takes two elevators, one frome garage to lobby and the second from lobby to garage. This takes about 3-7 minutes to get to your room.

Major Disappointment!
It was the worst hotel I have stayed anywhere in the world. The front desk was unbelievable - rude and inconsiderated. They dont even bother to look at you when questions are directed at them, it seemed as if they were too busy doing paper works than to servce their customers. On top of the excellent service, the room was old and outdated, the bathroom was moldy and the wall paper was peeling off.

The Japanese are reputedly one of the in the world when it comes to customers service but I was very disappointed, I had better experience at motel across the street from Disneyland. One and only good thing about this hotel is that is only a block or two away from Little Tokyo, and if you like Japnese food like I do that you can risk it.

It's ok.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/18/07
Pro: Japanese breakfast on rooftop garden is great. Only about $25. Also, other good restauraunts and shiatsu center. Good location to downtown. Con: Rooms are old. Decor is 20 years out of style. Non-smoking rooms smell like smoke. Overall: Average

Nice but don't expect excellence
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/11/08
The lobby atmosphere is very nice. Clean, floral smell nicely air conditioned. The staff was not as professional and accomodating as you would expect from a hotel that suggests Japanese roots. The room was fine. The bathroom well laid out with a phone, and a very nice adjustable portable shower head. Everything else was average, however, the matteress was horrible. The gardens were pleasant but be aware this is downtown. The noise level may be an issue and wedding parties should be aware that it could be a distraction.

Thirty DOLLARS for parking - BS!
By Lala in Maui, 2/17/09
On top of your room charge this place charges 24 bucks for self park and 30 bucks for valet. Not to mention -- no free internet. You have to pay 10 bucks a day for internet. Lousy way to do business. I'd never stay here again after paying these fees. What a rip off. And the rooms aren't that nice. Mine had peeling wallpaper and dirty carpets. Nothing worthy of a three star hotel. Don't waste your time or money.

Very disappointing
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/23/05
I was very dissapointed in my stay at The New Otani Hotel and Garden. I was directed to the wrong room twice, and when i finally did receive the correct room, what I found was mold in the bathroom, a dirty carpet, an unneatly made bed and a lack of toiletries in the bathroom. The service I recieved during my stay was minimal and I have never been treated so poorly by a hotel staff.

great place- who knew?
By jo, 6/26/06
don't understand other reviews- we had great service and a lovely room- although the garden is closed most weekends for affairs- but be sure to ask for a refurbished room - then you will be happy!

I'd stay there again
I stayed here recently when I came to the Star Wars convention and it exceeded my expectations. The staff was helpful, efficient, and polite. They did everything to make us feel at home even though many of their usual guests were Japanese tourists. The room was clean and comfortable. It had a very nice lobby and best of all, a Starbucks on the premises. The restaurants are a little pricey but there are places to eat nearby in Little Tokyo and there's a good pizza place about a block away. If I need to stay in downtown L.A. again, I'd pick The New Otani.
