Monterey Plaza Hotel And Spa, Monterey

My wife and I went away for our 10 year anniversary and drove up and down the coast. On our way back to Los Angeles, we decided to stay in Monterey. When researching the hotels in Monterey, I was most impressed by the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa. The staff were super friendly and helpful. From the concierce to the bellhop, to the cleaning crew and the vallet. My wife asked for one night to be in a place with an ocean view. Boy did we get an ocean view! We had a great room and were upgraded to one with a balcony so my wife and I could sit out there and enjoy the view. The room was quite nice and clean and the lobby of the hotel was also impressive. After we had left and were 200 miles from the hotel, we realized we left something there. They went above and beyond the call of duty by returning an item we left in the hotel and didn't even charge us for shipping it (which would would have gladly paid). Overall, and awesome hotel experience for our 10 year anniversary - looking forward to going there again for the next life event!

This was a family trip for us to celebrate my mom's birthday. We were really looking forward to our time in Monterey and were excited to be staying at the Monterey Plaza Hotel. That's why it was so terribly disappointing to have our stay go so badly. Our first night, I have no complaints. Our rooms overlooked the dolphin plaza and out onto Monterey Bay. This is truly and beautiful view and we left our windows open all night so we could listen to the surf and the seals barking. Saturday night was a nightmare. There was a large wedding out on the plaza and we were quite relieved when the noise stopped and the participants moved inside. But that was just the beginning. Once the music started our rooms were turned into a dance club. The noise level was so high that we could here the disc jockey and every song they were playing. I kept calling down to the front desk and they kept promising to contact banquets and get them to reduce the volume but that never happened. As it got closer to 10pm and my calls were getting more irate the front desk switched to "well, the music will stop at 10." The music did stop at 10 but then the participants spilled back out on to the plaza and we were treated to screaming kids and drunks for the next several hours. Now, obviously, you can't blame people for enjoying their wedding and whopping it up. But I do blame the hotel for renting out those rooms over the banquet hall when they knew far in advanced that a wedding was booked directly below. We had such a short time in Monterey and I really feel that the hotel disregarded our concerns and certainly did not provided us with the experience that we payed for. I can't in good conscience recommend that anyone stay here. It's a beautiful building, and a wonderful location but if you're there when there is a party or convention, you're just going to have to live with noise. This hotel doesn't seem to value the individual traveler or family as much as it's banquet and convention business. I wanted to update this review. I received a phone call from the hotel and they apologized and are working to address my issue.

I really liked that when we first walked right through the doors, we felt special! The staff was so kind and helpful always willing to answer questions that we had. The rooms were great, ours had the balcony with the partial ocean view. ....But i didn't see what was so partial about it because the view was amazing from the 4th floor. In the morning we woke up to the sound of waves crashing and the fresh clean breeze of the ocean. It was great!! The spa was the highlight of the trip. The staff is great, service is AMAZING, and the massages PLUS all the amenities that are offered there OMG ... this deserves a ***** 5 star rating. This place was just AMAZING, on the pricey $$$$ side.. that's for sure the only downfall. But other than that.. location is great, fell in love with the small sandwich cabana a block up from the Hotel. Definitely one of the best pastrami sandwich i have had, and I'm from San Francisco !! I will definitely be visiting soon.

At the hotel.. we checked in really late.. the area had some power outages which knocked out the heating system at the hotel. Most rooms got heat during the day and stayed warm all night but ours, since we checked in late, the heat was not turned on during the day so it was cold. Made some calls to the front desk, they tried to get us a space heater, which would of made us more then happy... but no luck, so they upgraded us to a suit with a fireplace... my wife was thrilled which made me thrilled. Everyone at this hotel was nice and i found a great deal online. We would highly recommend this hotel to all and would have to disagree with some of the reviews below. I would recommend this hotel to all.. even with kids.. great location, nice place and the staff made us feel like home.

I booked this hotel for a nice getaway over the 4th of July weekend. I called to confirm the booking and the service over the phone I quickly changed my mind... They were rude and uninviting I had very simple basic questions that were met with a very rude tone and kind of condesending . So needless to say I canceled my reservations very quickly because of that if they are rude over the phone and not welcoming they lost a customer. In addition they charged my credit card a full week prior to the stay and I am having real trouble getting a credit back to my card. When I called to inquire the girl on the phone in reservations was again very rude and unwilling to help. The staff really needs to be retrained on customer service they could have recovered me as a customer for a future visit if they had been less rude about the credit. So sad : (

Watch out for the positive reviews --- they are no doubt written by the hotel management. Bring lots of cash and visit at your own risk!

Our stay here was outstanding. The room are spacious and well appointed. The staff was so helpful and accessible. My family loved the apple bowl at the front desk, nice touch. We spent many mornings in the lobby by the fireplace watching the sea otters in the bay. We rented kayaks for the day from Adventures by the Sea (across the street) and were able come and go from the beach in front of the hotel. We first went to the warf which was covered with Sea Lions then later we went down by the aquarium and floated near otters and seals. The seals were so cute! they kept popping up near the kayak as if to play peek-a-boo. I also loved walking the beach and under the hotel at low tide. It was fun to see the Starfish and other sea life (be careful where you step). This is a luxury hotel and has lots activities planned for guest if you'd like to join a group. The hotel also has an arrangement with the coffee shop to provide complimentary coffee to guests. We ended up getting breakfast there since their fruit and pastry selection was so good. We did not use the Spa and I know that you must be 18 or older to use the facilities so if your with kids, forget it. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel for a great stay in Monterey bay

A great location but a disapointment for the expennse! The mini fridg was unclean as was the shelving around it!. No coffee service found in the room as noted in on line information and in orientation book found in room. The complimentary coffee was found only between 6-7 am in the cafe down stairs!!

Really enjoyed our stay at the Monterey Plaza Hotel. Location is great for touring the monterey bay and downtown monterey. Spa was wonderful

Went for spa treatments, rooms were cold and the table for the sugar scrub was very uncomfortable. The headrest was not positioned properly so you either felt like you were being choked because it went across your throat your you had to put your chin on that part, leaving your head too high. Either way was uncomfortable. Showers had dirty towels in it from previous guests, I never saw an attendant come in to clean or pick up towels at all while I was there. To top it off, getting our car out of valet parking took 20 minutes. We came in 2 cars and the other car got there a full 5 minutes before ours even though we both gave our tickets at the same time. The driveway frequently got blocked by drivers coming in and out so that even when you did get your car, you sometimes had to wait to drive out. I don't know if they were cutting back on staff but they sure could improve on service.
