Great location , amazing service
By tigger, 7/4/08
the mark twain is just a short walk away from union square and the mass transit lines. the staff are very helpful giving directions to the highlights of the town getting a shuttle scheduled, adn just about anything else. the hotel itself is about 80 years old so the walls are a little thin. you can't hear everything thats going on in the room next to you, but if they start laughing and yelling and carrying on, the topics of conversation are clearly heard. the rooms are nice. the only issues i had was that the closet was very dark, and the faucet on the sink was a little tight.

Phony charges
We were incorrectly charged for a movie we didn’t watch. The manager wasn’t there at checkout so I emailed her later that we didn’t request a movie and explained how unlikely it was at the time indicated. (Just one hour after checking in at 10 PM with 2 kids under 4). She replied that the charge stood since their record said we requested a movie. When I called her on the phone she got very impatient and told me their system couldn’t be wrong. I was shocked how stubborn and arrogant she was. Our total bill at the hotel was about $1,900. There is no point to lie about $14.95. Their attitude was offensive.

Great old world style hotel
By William, 7/3/06
This is a fine hotel styled around the early 20th century era of San Francisco. You can see this is in the architecture and the surrounding city-scape. I felt like I was entering a historical landmark. If you're a spoiled American tourist who expects to be treated like royalty and fed like a family of four, this hotel might not suit your tastes as it requires an appreciation of a long gone era when things were more precious and simpler. Overall, an incredible experience in a traditional San Francisco hotel with a long history of serving generations of travelers. Very charming!

Management and employees don't solve problems and are insincere with clients
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/16/05
I chose this Hotel to celebrate my 25th anniversary during my visit to San Francisco and it was a terribel experience. I stayed there for 4 days and during my first day after I went out for a few hours I couldn't open the electronic door of my room. It took sometime before an employee really went to check with me that the electronic door was not working and they had to call an engineer to deal with it. Meanwhile they had to place me in another room, but the thing was - they promised I could get my stuff early in the morning (my bags, my clothes, my passport and documents - everything that I had was in that room), and the in the morning they told me that the engineer had never appeared during the night , but they would call him and then in the afternoon I would be able to go to my room and get my stuff again. Fact, when I returned in the late afternoon - nothing, no one had moved a finger to open my room and allow me to get my stuff. They made a new promise that I would be able to do it by the next morning, but I could see they were not being honest in their "talk" about trying to solve my problem. New morning.... nothing absolutely done. They had done nothing to open my room.... Worse, in the third evening, I wasn't still able to go to my room, and you can imagine my worry about my passport and documents, and the fact I had not been able to change clothes for more than 2 days. Worse, I couldn't even check-out of this bad hotel to find another one, since they had my passport and clothes with them. Only in the 3rd morning did I find an employee that realized that my problem was indeed serious and deserved immediate attention. I asked to see the manager and see promised to refund my credit card in 2 days (since I had prepaid my stay), but one month passed and the refund never appeared. I politely called to the Hotel and asked for the manager on the phone, and she just hang up on me! What I think makes it all worse is that I realized that my misfortunes were more than just the result of mere laziness and forgetfulness - they were just the normal act of a dishonest and unprofessional management. The Manager definitelly lacks any care or interest in the clients troubles, and deals rudely and dishonestly with them, promising to solve problems that she never intends to deal with.

Definitley would Go Back
By Louie, 5/18/05
It was an inexpensive hotel right in the middle of everything the city has to offer.Public transportaion is right down the street(Bart, cable cars,Trollies)Union Square with all the nice shopping is right there. It's Perfect for the traveler on the go, not for someone who wants to spend the whole time in a hotel room.

awful experience ..even a motel is better
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/7/05
This place is worse than a standard motel ..I wonder why yahoo gives it 3 stars. Noisy rooms ..you feel you are sleeping on the street side if your room faces the street. There is no individual temperature control in the room ..so had to call the front desk at 3 am at night to ask how we could make the room cooler No hair dryer provided in the room. No one answers the phone for housekeeping. On requesting the front desk they said that I must come to the desk to collect it. I requested it to be sent up since i was not fully dressed and I got the following reply. The hair dryer is not listed as an amenity and I shoudl be grateful they are giving me one. They dont have anyone to send it up. If I want it I gotta come down. The iron board was dusty and wrinkled. You'd get your clothes wrinkled further if you tried using it. Parking is $30 a day which is ridiculous because the parking acroos the street (with inns and outs) is $18. These guys are just making money. The bathroom is so cramped that you can barely find place to stand. I would recommend this place to no one.

Reservations are dust in the wind...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/24/05
The trouble started before our trip. My wife and I made a reservation 45 days before our trip. Two weeks later we were told they were booked up and they wouldn't be able to honor our reservation. A couple days later they claimed they would honor our reservation. A week later we were told once again hour reservation would not be honored. As I argued over the phone, my wife scrambled to make another reservation online, finally we were told they would honor the original reservation, but by then I figured how could we trust them? Who's to say in another week they wouldn't have cancelled again. We decided not to take that risk. If you want to be sure you have a real reservation, I would book somewhere else.

Good value
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/13/04
I thought this was a great deal for the price. We stayed here the weekend after Thanksgiving 2004 and the staff was very courteous, everything was very clean and we were very close to everything. It's a great place for people who just need a decent place to stay during their trip to San Francisco.
