Don't stay at hotel del
By , 08/22/09
Union Local 30 has some sort of action underway and are yelling at guests thru loud speakers to check out....not the sort of environment you want to bring your family to on vacation. Housekeeping does a poor job, walls are so thin you hear the conversations in the adjoining rooms, food service is mediocre at best, wireless internet is so weak you can't stay connected, etc., etc.

Disney atmosphere-disappointing eateries.
By Redskinrex, 08/22/09
My wife wanted to stay at this hotel for nearly 20 years. After putting aside some… a lot of money, we went for our 20th anniversary along with our seven-year-old daughter. Before leaving, my wife called the main number and asked if we would need reservations for dinning or kid’s activities. We were told that as guests of the hotel, we wouldn’t need them and it wouldn’t be a problem. Wrong! Dinning without a reservation was a problem and the kid’s camp was “fully booked” when we called to sign up our daughter. Although the accommodations are nice, the hotel was crowded with so many kids, that it had exactly the same overwhelming feel as Disney World. For the evening of our 20th anniversary we went to the “signature” restaurant 1500 Ocean. My daughter had taken a late nap, so we arrived shortly after 8:00 pm. Although, most of the tables were empty, we were told it would be a few minutes before we could be seated, because we didn’t have a reservation. After we were seated, it took a long, long time to get something to drink, some bread and to place our order. In fact my wife, who has the patient of a saint, began debating as to whether we should just leave and go to the “casual” restaurant, Shearwater instead. In all, the meal took nearly two hours and we were forced to make at least three comments to staff about the inattentive service including asking twice for a waiter to come by the table. The food was good, but I am not exaggerating when I say that the service at our local Cracker Barrel is exponentially more attentive than what we endured at 1500 Ocean. Given the cost and ballyhoo associated with this “signature” establishment, the level of service was so far beyond unacceptable that I can’t begin to put it into words. The fact that the restaurant was nearly empty leads us to wonder how much worse service must be when it’s busy. Bottom line: Unless you want to spend an enormous amount of time and money for poor service, eat somewhere else. Shearwater was a much better experience, though only the dress is casual, NOT the prices. The best dinning experience we found was a place across the street called the Brigantine Seafood House. It was everything 1500 Ocean wasn’t and even though it was crowded, service was excellent as was the food. Perhaps the most amazing part of our stay was when a fire alarm was triggered one afternoon. After my wife fled the premises with our daughter, she was actually admonished by concierge who told her that she should have waited in the room for instructions and that it would be a really “bad thing” if all of the guests headed for the exits upon hearing the fire alarm. Are you kidding me?! I usually stay in average hotels when I travel (2-3 diamonds) and once a year, we try to go somewhere really nice like the Greenbrier or Grand. Overall, I’m not demanding and generally easygoing, but based on the five nights we spent at the Del, we have no desire to return.

Pathetic, Worst 4th Of July Stay EVER in History!
By Jeff, 07/05/09
To Del Coronado Management, We've been a frequent customer of the Del over the past several 4th of July holidays and I have enjoyed them thoroughly. We keep coming back. However, I must say this years stay at the Del has been the most disappointing we've ever experienced, not just at the Del, but anywhere. We travel the country and stay at hotels and resorts that respect the privacy and needs of their guests. The Del is Americana, beautiful, family oriented and that's what motivates us to return, the whole experience. Today, 7/4, we heard "music" blasting from a beach party and were unable to dine outside, enjoy our balcony, the sunset, etc. without being subjected to this horrendous, outrageously loud and pathetic "music". The "DJ" was screaming into the microphone all afternoon and early evening. What the heck is "de hump, de hump"? Sickening. I would call the police if we weren't on private property. For the past 7 hours, I've been subjected to loud rap, disco, etc. music, some distasteful and definitely not relaxing. We cannot enjoy our room , anywhere on the grounds, restaurants, etc. without the blaring, obnoxious noise generated by this beach party. When we booked our room, we were unaware of this party booking and would not have reserved a room for this weekend had we known this party was taking place. This is not what we paid for. This has ruined our weekend. Very sad that this the Del has resorted to this level for revenue. I look forward to negotiating a credit for our stay.

our family vacay
By banana Anna, 02/18/09
The best vacation our family has gone on in quite awhile. The beach room was just absolutly beautiful, we could just walk out our patio right on the beach. The hotel was just as advertised with areas that exceeded the pictures.Food was a little pricey, the breakfast buffet was worth every penny. The shops had some excellent prices on clothing. You get what you pay for. Service was very good and our room was always fresh and cleaned, no complaints.

Be Careful with your credit cards and Cash
By criss, 01/07/09
My Girlfriend went to the Hotel Del and while there her locker was opened in the Spa and her money and Credit card was taken. Could it have been an employee? Well since she was the only person in the Spa and since the lockers have a code that only her and they know, I will leave it up to you. The final would I can give you is to be careful and keep an eye on anything you do not want to lose.

Ruined Our Wedding Dreams
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/22/08
I want to start off by saying that my fiance and I chose the Hotel del above all other Southern California locations to host our wedding next year. My fiance's family has 3 generations of Navy officers that were stationed in Coronado, so it was quite a significant place for us to tie the knot. Everyone was very eager to help us get our wedding plans set up. We had anticipated about 100 guests and they proceeded to quote us with a food and beverage minimum based on our preferences. We were a little too excited to go ahead with our wedding plans so we signed a contract within a week, agreeing to their quoted food/beverage minimum for one of the mid-sized banquet rooms for the reception. Everything in the contract is stated in percentage terms and is quite vague as to what is subject to their 22% service charge plus state and local tax rates. We signed this contract about 1 week before the week the market plummeted 5000 points. The fund we had set aside for our wedding was literally a small fraction of its original dollar amount, leaving us with much less than just the food/beverage/venue minimum we were in contract for. We contacted the catering sales manager immediately to inform her of our defunct financial situation and her response was "well, the market could go back up, you never know (come on, 5000 points?!). You have a year to figure out your budget and make it work. You knew the market was volatile when you signed with us." Cold blooded indeed. When I offered to simply cancel and take the hit on my $9000 deposit - yes lose $9000 just to walk away - the manager informed me that I owe them half of the anticipated food and beverage minimum WITH taxes and service fees, and would cost me an additional $10,000 to cancel! I think anyone in this situation would be devistated by losing so much of their net worth, let alone being scolded by the hotel for market conditions out of our control. Yes we did sign a contract, however they were so rude to us and offered us absolutely no leeway whatsoever on our contractual obligations. We tried to negotiate with them on bringing down the contracted price so we could still get married at our favorite location and they were cold as ice. They have 11 months to rebook and they are holding us liable for money that we don't have just to keep us in contract for a wedding late next year?! That is the worst customer service in my opinion. We have since retained counsel and might have to pursue the litigation route just to be able to have some money left over for a wedding. The sad part is that it would be cheaper for us to go through with the litigation to get out of the contract plus have a wedding somewhere else, than to have it at the Hotel del Coronado. Talk about kicking someone when they are down. I am still appalled at the nerve of those people holding us to something that they have almost a year to rebook with people who can actually afford to have a wedding there.

A one time experience
By James, 08/23/08
So I have a knack for picking out some of the nicest places to stay, but I learned my lesson on this trip, nice is not always the best. We booked online and was unaware of the $25 a day mandatory resort charge, that includes the same things that you get at a holiday inn (like an in room coffee maker) except for the broken down beach chairs that warrant a free massage for even sitting in them. The circulation on the grounds is borderline retarded, you cant find your way around at all because of the piss poor layout of the hotel. Nothing is free at the del, and if you are visiting san diego, visit san diego and stay away. California is expensive as it is and the 200% mark up at the del will find its way into your checking account, if you go. The beach is man made and the waves are flat, and the beach directly behind the hotel is a no swim zone because of 'underwater obstructions' (they exist we saw a woman get carted off to the hospital because of her foot kicking something, then the lifeguards promptly shifted their signs further apart claiming more of the beach) also there are weddings almost every night ( the waiting list is 2 years long) and the place is rampant with noisy spoiled brats that are in good need of a slaping. If you rent a car on coronado island park in the neighborhoods it is free, at the del you are charged $23 a day or $15 an hour, this makes renting a car pointless. My suggestion to anyone considering the del as a place to stay, DONT DO IT. just visit the del instead, stay in la jollia of pacific beach where you can get a real west coast experience, not the same rich fake people that you see on every vacation because you want to stay at "the nicest hotel" because chances are you will be at sea world or the zoo, ect...
