All flash....not much substance

We came in from NY to have a quiet 5 day get-away for new years....as it turned out we made a fatal mistake in choosing the Viceroy. It may have been the New Years holiday, but a stress test is the best way to really test out a hotel or restaurant. These guys failed miserably....I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. The Viceroy turns out to be a Potemkin village....a bit frayed, worn and dirty around the edges. Overall, it was not worth the time or money. At this point, the hotel experience is making us feel a bit cheated on our New Years holiday get-away.
Our initial expectations were derived from reviews of the LA hotel, decor/design mags-blogs and some user reviews, granted not the best sources for hotel services or comfort. Upon arrival, our initial impression of the hotel was good...their limited public space was working off of their high design aesthetic, all was fine until we were shown to our room.
We made our reservation back in July 0f 2008 and although we were paying the lowest rack rate, it was still full fare – the room rate being well over $300. The first room they showed us was miniscule (and that is coming from a NYCity/Tokyo scale of small rooms), it smelled, was dark/dank and had ripped stained carpet and curtains. The bathroom was reminded us of European pensions or RV campers from our youth –Toilet/sink/shower all in one compact 3X3 room.
The front desk was gracious but not accommodating due to the upcoming holiday. They couldn't accommodate our request to pay for an upgraded room, but with some drama, could change our room.
The second room was a brighter (but unbelievably smaller room), but again wear and tear was obvious, we chalked it up to the white on white interior, so we settled.
Our “better” room had a broken bathroom window, broken cabinet knobs, missing light switches and lamp parts and regular roach visitors finished out the room. One odd note….was the lack of a towel bar or hooks in the bathroom, so you would have to use the closed toilet or sink to place a towel while showering.
Our New Years Eve dinner was equally a nightmare. We were not told that they were planning a New Years Eve party, which turned out to be a crowded, blasting DJ club atmosphere that basically took over the entire (limited) public space, outdoor dining and pool area….which was open to the public. While trying to negotiate the fabulous crowds, we were seated almost an hour after our 10:45PM reservation, at which time were treated to mediocre tasting menu (seemed a bit warmed over) by a harried, rushed and almost aggressive wait service.
The kicker is that on January first, when friends showed up from LA for the weekend, they were booked into what only could be considered a huge suite by comparison to our room (it was cleaner looking, had a balcony, and a full bathroom with amenities) all for a rate that was about half of our room rate.
Needless to say, we were unimpressive, and felt a bit like the Palm Springs Viceroy is a bit too self-serving, trying to hold onto or create some kind of mystique/"velvet rope" exclusivity – at the cost of servicing paying hotel guests.
