I've had worse, but I've also had so much better
By Laura, 08/26/09
I am a Hampton and Holiday Inn kind of girl. They have spoiled me rotten over the years. But I let another Marine wife convince me to stay at Guesthouse when my husband graduated from SOI. She said it was cheaper, closer, and still decent. After my stay, I would never recommend it to another person visiting Camp Pendleton. The room was fairly clean upon arrival, and the towels were fine with me. But my non-smoking room smelled faintly of cigarette smoke, it was dark, and the bed was broken. Several attempts were made to change rooms but the front desk wasn't helpful at all. I was told that check-in was at 3, and arrived at 3:30 only to find out that my room would not be ready for another hour. The continental breakfast was very sad and consisted only of coffee, orange juice, and some dry danishes. I ended up eating at the waffle house across the street each morning. Free wireless was a definite plus, and you have to obtain an access code from the desk. The phone in my room was also not working. Oceanside view depends entirely on which side of the hotel you're on and only a few rooms get a view. The rest of us get views of the parking lot or I-5. One of the days I stayed there, I left for the beach at noon and returned at 5, only to find that no one had visited my room to make the bed, change the towels, or replenish the soaps. The door was also sticky and took a good solid push to get it to open. The hotel restaurant, however, is AMAZING! It actually has very beautiful ocean views and delicious middle eastern food. I would eat there even if I wasn't staying at the hotel. It's a good thing their food was so good, since it's really the only eating place within walking distance (there is a waffle house and an italian diner too) The location is sub-par. It's 5 minutes from the main gate of the base, which means that it is tucked in between a strip club (which frequently has clusters of dancers out front smoking) and the freeway entrance. I was traveling alone and didn't feel very comfortable with that part of Oceanside. It's a 10 minute walk to the beach...past strip clubs, liquor stores, and people honking their car horns at you. When I finally got to the beach I wish I had paid a little extra and just stayed in one of the nicer hotel chains down there. When all was paid for and tax was added, I spent $400 for 4 nights, but could easily have gotten 4 nights at a Hampton or Holiday Inn for $495, and I would rather pay a little extra for good service, fresh amenities, safety, and a fully-functioning room elsewhere in Oceanside, even if means an extra 5-10 minutes to get onto the base.

Last night before deployment good-bye.
By E Lady, 01/30/09
My husband was leaving for a year to Iraq and as such the ENITRE family was out to say good-bye to him. And our 2 young children. So we needed 1) someplace close to a base gate 2) nearby restaurants 3) CLEAN AND AFFORDABLE. I must say that this place offered all of the above for the best price I could find. I had read the reviews previous to booking and when we got there I did a thorough search for said mold and mildew and found none. True the view was of the parking lot but that wasnt a major concern of mine and actually worked to our advantage. We managed to get a connecting door that, when privacy was wanted, you couldn't hear a thing through. It DIDN"T reek of cigarett smoke, was close enough to the elevator, and was a quiet location. Checking in and out was rediculously simple. Yes they only booked one room instead of 2 (I don't know how it was an internet booking) but it was an easy fix and we got a better discount for it. NEVER be afraid to ask for a better disount when something is wrong. The staff was helpfull when needed and picked up the phone when you called. No it is not the newest and shiny-est of hotels but was clean and effecient and effective. And around that time they were doing a minor remoldel with no incovience to us. There are no warm and fuzzy-feel-good aminities. But a clean and comfortable place to sleep and shower. Considering what we were there for it was not really fun but met my standards (nose in the air) and my budget. I work in a 4 star hotel. I would defanatly recommend this hotel to others who are in a NEED basis not a WANT one.

Bad customer service.
By SarahA, 08/19/08
We only stayed one night for a wedding. We asked the front desk if they could call us a cab to take us to my friends wedding she said it would be here in 15 min. When we asked if the cab came by they said opps i forgot. So I had to quickly drive ourselves to my friends wedding. We missed the most of the ceremony and I would never recommend this place to anyone.

My first and last stay
By Lito, 06/17/08
The ad is surely misleading. Ya, oceanviews depends on which side of the building you are. The backside faces the ocean and the frontside faces I-5. Clean? I have seen cleaner and less expensive hotels. Rooms may be spacious but a working bathroom exhaust fan is more important. Carpet along hallways are dirty and same with the rooms. Never again. Towels are old and grayish.

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/19/08
I,ve read some of reviews and I,m shocked. I didnt see any mould or dust or any other problems.I come down every year for the First Marine Div. Assoc. reunion from Bakersfield and I am more than satisfied. The early morning staff is especially helpfull and I enjoy the breakfast room wich opens at 0600.Also they provide us with a hospitality room in wich many a Marine Corps sea story is spun.Semper Fi. Nitpickers Sheeech!

We ARE going back!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/08/07
This was the absolute best hotel ever. The view from our room was incredible, especially since one entire wall was a window! The hotel was close to everything we needed, a couple minutes from restaurants, shopping, and driving distance from many attractions. I don't think there was one aspect of this hotel that I didn't like.

Relaxing with a view
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/27/06
For the money you certainly get its worth! I've had much worse for twice the money. Here you get a nice clean room and in many casees with a nice view. Each room has a small outside padio area with a table and chairs. Again for the money try and beat it.

Roomy!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/16/05
The rooms are of a decent size, clean restrooms, although the pool is abit on the cold side, it can be comfortable during hot weather.
